Am I the only person in the UK who is a bit chilly?

I've finally relented and put my fluffy oodie on.

We have 2 portable air con units. They are supposed to be one for downstairs and one for upstairs, but I kept turning the downstairs one off because it was making me cold, so DDs took it because they said the upstairs one only covers half of the upstairs.

Which was fine because it was making me cold anyway, but the way they've angled them to cover the entire upstairs floor, including where the dogs are, (it's like a U shape, their rooms are on opposite ends of the U, and the dogs hang out in the middle) means both air cons are now pointed half at the stairs and are blasting cold air down the stairs and under the door.

Their argument is that I can put a jumper on. The dogs cannot take their fur off, which again is true, but I am still envious of all the cosy, warm people while I am sitting shivering in my oodie.

It was hotter than 24C when they turned them on, tbf. The aircon units said it was 28C. I think they've cooled down slowly as the aircons started to work and have acclimatised, whereas I'm always cold.

The longhaired demon appreciated the aircons, he positioned himself between them and allowed his hair to blow around like he was in a Timotei ad.

Poor DS was cold at work today. AI Con was on high and he was freezing ( he’s skinny).
I hate air con. Feels so unnatural. Bit like radiator heat versus a fire .

RaininSummer · 25/06/2026 21:10

Air con in the office usually chills me to the bone but not this week other than having cold feet.

WorriedAnxiousAndStressed · 25/06/2026 21:26

Air cons make me feel too cold (don’t have one here (UK) but when visiting abroad in countries where temperature is usually 40 degrees C +) and always turn them off when going to sleep. But I’m pretty much always cold and most of my family are quite possibly sick of hearing me moaning about being cold 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 25/06/2026 21:28

Where are you though , in Bath today it was like Dubai , inside and out , unless in my air conditioned office- which to be fair felt arctic !

Fatiguedwithlife · 25/06/2026 21:28

I’m sitting with a sweatshirt on, heated cushion on my back and a blanket on my legs! No air con.

FWC2026 · 25/06/2026 21:31

Gwenhwyfar · 25/06/2026 20:39

This is why aircon is not the solution.

No it's not. It's about where you put it!

the 'DD's' need to out one in each bedroom & shut their doors, the dogs will find a comfortable spot.

Fiftyandnotsonifty · 25/06/2026 21:32

Going to the cinema this weekend I can’t wait apparently it’s freezing in there 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🙏🙏

Air con cold is a special kind of cold isn't it?

I appreciate ours a night, midsummer. I like to turn them on an hour or so before bed to cool the room down. I appreciate them for 10-15 minutes after being outside to cool down a bit, or to what I was doing earlier, and turning them on for a few mins here and there. But all day, no. No one needs to live in a freezer.

I've just gone upstairs, and the temp reading on the aircon units says 16C, the longhaired demon has now positioned himself under the exhaust hoses, and the other dogs are under their blankets, so I have turned one off and put the other on fan mode and told them the next person who touches the aircons will be beaten to death with one of the icicles hanging off the staircase.

What units do you have that are blowing and affecting you downstairs? I have a couple air con units and none of them going upstairs would affect me downstairs and they are quite powerful units, so would love to know what models they are. They also sound quite light as ours would take 2 people to move, whereas yours was quite casually taken up by your daughter. Also did you not have to fit anything as ours require a hose out of the window so its not a 2 minute job to just move them.

They sound like great units, lightweight, easy to move and cooling a huge area (unless you live in a tiny home) so I would love to know what these are as they sound quite spectacular as a portable air con.

BerryTwister · 25/06/2026 21:42

You’re obviously in one of the parts of the UK that isn’t having a heatwave. The temperatures you quote aren’t especially warm. If you go to a different place in the UK, you’ll find it’s hotter and you don’t need long sleeves.

It’s really not complicated. There’s no mystery.

No clue, I got them off Amazon, they weren't cheap, but we bought them out of season, and secondhand, so they had a big discount. Next time I go upstairs, I will look at the brand.

Only the downstairs one is light enough to be moved by one person. The one that lives upstairs needs 2 people; the downstairs one is heavy but manageable if you are determined. They are designed for houses bigger than ours, which probably helps. Our house is quite small.

We have a weird, velcro thingy with a zip that sticks to the window frame, and then you just open the zipper a bit and shove the exhaust hose for the downstairs one. The upstairs one has a wall thingy, a builder-fitted for us, but it also has a long, flexible exhaust, so we have a bit of freedom over where to put it.

It's cool here tonight. I've closed all the doors and windows. It's only 17.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 25/06/2026 21:48

Is this just a brag about having air con and not sweltering?

OtherS · 25/06/2026 21:54

Happy dogs. That's all that matters. You've raised your daughters well!

(And please don't tell my dog about air con 😬)

I was genuinely cold and envious of all the threads where people were too hot. I despise being even slightly cold; I'd rather be too hot.

I think it might have been the breeze from under the door making me feel colder than it actually was. It's much more comfortable already.

This is downstairs one; Amazon doesn't have them in stock now. I just searched my past orders. We paid £149 last September for an ex-display model.

Still sounds rather impressive to be light enough to move with 1 person and cold enough to be making a difference downstairs to upstairs. I have 3 units of varying power and not one of them could do that so would be very interested to know a unit that can do that.

My bedroom one will cool my bedroom but if I have the door open barely affects the hallway, so your home must be very tiny honestly to be affecting a different floor, or you have an insanely powerful unit.

Amazon is easy enough to get a link from, would love to know which unit or a model name as ours clearly doesnt have the awesome ability of yours so I think I need a better unit.

PMSL. Unless you're British and are currently on holiday in Reykjavik you can't possibly be chilly!

Maybe, although I do like the aircon on a night or when I come back from a walk and feel all sticky.

I'm leaning towards the solution being to evict the kids so I can have 100% control over the temperatureWink

@sweatymessi Teesside, one of the coastal towns, I don't think we're quite as hot as most areas. We're certainly not hot enough to warrant turning the top floor of the house into a freezer.

The Met Office say it has been 24C here at the hottest, it's currently 20C.

I'm not far from you @Frequency . It isn't particularly warm in our house tonight. No ac. I'm sat in shorts and top though.

Dss are in the south. It's a lot warmer there.

BerryTwister · 25/06/2026 22:03

OP do you know what the temperature is outside your front door right now? Mine is 27 degrees. If yours is several degrees less, that could explain the strange mystery that you think you’ve found. Are you aware that not all parts of the country have the same weather at the same time?

Of course the media are talking about the heatwave, because it would be boring to say “in some parts of the country there was a high of 23 degrees today”.

It's probably worth mentioning at this point, before you go off and spend all your money on my recommendation, that I am always cold. When we went to Spain earlier this year, I made my mate get an Uber to the closest Primark because everyone told me all I would need was t-shirts and a cardi for the evening, so that's all I packed.

It. Was. Freezing.

I had to go and buy jumpers, hoodies, and an extra blanket for the bed.

I’m originally from Teesside and I can confirm that Redcar etc does have its own microclimate. I’ve had colleagues ring me from there to see if it had snowed in Middlesbrough, where our office was.

Not sure you need aircon there unless it suddenly catches up with the temperature everywhere else!

Am I in some parallel universe where people don’t know that different parts of the UK have different weather? It’s 27 degrees right now outside my house. My friend in Newcastle says it’s 17 degrees there.

coronafiona · 25/06/2026 22:07

Its still an impressive unit if you are feeling the effects on a different floor of the house. As I say my smaller air con unit doesnt cool to any major degree in the hallway and even our largest unit in our living room, you cannot really feel the difference in the hallway in any meaningful way.

So if its cooling your downstairs in a way you can feel the difference from the upstairs then its got to be quite impressive so im definitely intrigued. We have had a number of units of varying levels over the last years and that is quite an impressive reach.
