Am I the only person in the UK who is a bit chilly?

I've finally relented and put my fluffy oodie on.

We have 2 portable air con units. They are supposed to be one for downstairs and one for upstairs, but I kept turning the downstairs one off because it was making me cold, so DDs took it because they said the upstairs one only covers half of the upstairs.

Which was fine because it was making me cold anyway, but the way they've angled them to cover the entire upstairs floor, including where the dogs are, (it's like a U shape, their rooms are on opposite ends of the U, and the dogs hang out in the middle) means both air cons are now pointed half at the stairs and are blasting cold air down the stairs and under the door.

Their argument is that I can put a jumper on. The dogs cannot take their fur off, which again is true, but I am still envious of all the cosy, warm people while I am sitting shivering in my oodie.

Am I in some parallel universe where people don’t know that different parts of the UK have different weather? It’s 27 degrees right now outside my house. My friend in Newcastle says it’s 17 degrees there.

17C isn't cold.

HTH.

lovecotswoldsliving · 25/06/2026 22:08

You are strange!
My house down South was 31 degrees today and outside was 35. Not funny.

I was genuinely cold and envious of all the threads where people were too hot. I despise being even slightly cold; I'd rather be too hot.

I think it might have been the breeze from under the door making me feel colder than it actually was. It's much more comfortable already.

This is downstairs one; Amazon doesn't have them in stock now. I just searched my past orders. We paid £149 last September for an ex-display model.

Ive just seen you posted the link, im honestly amazed that a 12000btu unit would be felt on a different floor, you must have a really tiny home because as I say, my 12000btu unit doesnt have any level of effective cooling beyond the room its in. Im quite amazed it is reaching as far as a different floor of the house honestly.

Could you be anaemic or have thyroid problems @Frequency?

Just mentioning, as you said you were also cold whilst on holiday.

I've been checked for thyroid problems a few times they always tell me I'm borderline. But yes, I am always cold; it's a running joke in my family that wherever I go, I always have a blanket with me. I listened to everyone when they begged me not to take a blanket to Spain, and ended up having to buy one. We've booked again for next year. I will be bringing my blanket.

I've haven't been checked for anaemia lately, but my being cold is not a recent thing.

I was cold at work earlier. The aircon was freezing and a few people were putting blankets and hoodies on

I had that unit, genuinely, it’s shite, a fan does more.

not sure what this thread is about, but I can guarantee it’s not about great aircon units, as that’s not one.

When they have one of them running up there, it makes a slight difference to downstairs, if you sit close to the door, but they had two of them running on full at the same time.

Genuinely since seeing the unit you posted, I do not believe that unit is making a difference on a different floor of the house. It just doesnt have enough power to do what you are suggesting. So if you are cold, its more that you are a cold person and nothing to do with these units, they would not cool that far away in any meaningful way, even 2 of them.

Thisnonagenarian · 25/06/2026 22:46

The highest temperature here has been 16 degrees this week. Not all of Britain is in the South. Today we had rain and lightning. There was a day in May when we had 25 degrees. Rest of the family in England is envious.

Fancyteacup · 25/06/2026 23:05

I’ve been freezing in the office at work today, the minute my colleagues left I turned the air con off. Got home and wished to be back in it mind.

Maybe, although I do like the aircon on a night or when I come back from a walk and feel all sticky.

I'm leaning towards the solution being to evict the kids so I can have 100% control over the temperatureWink

@sweatymessi Teesside, one of the coastal towns, I don't think we're quite as hot as most areas. We're certainly not hot enough to warrant turning the top floor of the house into a freezer.

The Met Office say it has been 24C here at the hottest, it's currently 20C.

Why on earth are they putting air con on for that temp? 20c is normal room temp!
That’s not hot at all?!

fashionqueen0123 · 25/06/2026 23:43

Air con cold is a special kind of cold isn't it?

I appreciate ours a night, midsummer. I like to turn them on an hour or so before bed to cool the room down. I appreciate them for 10-15 minutes after being outside to cool down a bit, or to what I was doing earlier, and turning them on for a few mins here and there. But all day, no. No one needs to live in a freezer.

I've just gone upstairs, and the temp reading on the aircon units says 16C, the longhaired demon has now positioned himself under the exhaust hoses, and the other dogs are under their blankets, so I have turned one off and put the other on fan mode and told them the next person who touches the aircons will be beaten to death with one of the icicles hanging off the staircase.

😂😂

@PrettyLittleRose 17 degrees is definitely cold enough to want to wear long sleeves. And it’s not a heatwave. So if OP lives somewhere that’s currently 17 degrees, it’s no wonder she’s not melting like those of us in hotter places.

Everyone, including OP, is wondering how on earth OP could possibly be cold during a heatwave. And the point I’m making is that not every part of the UK is experiencing a heatwave at the moment.

What units do you have that are blowing and affecting you downstairs? I have a couple air con units and none of them going upstairs would affect me downstairs and they are quite powerful units, so would love to know what models they are. They also sound quite light as ours would take 2 people to move, whereas yours was quite casually taken up by your daughter. Also did you not have to fit anything as ours require a hose out of the window so its not a 2 minute job to just move them.

They sound like great units, lightweight, easy to move and cooling a huge area (unless you live in a tiny home) so I would love to know what these are as they sound quite spectacular as a portable air con.

🤣🤣me too.

Well ok, that is not hot. I would not ac on at that temperature either

Come here and live with DS instead. He got upset today when I said i was getting an air con unit for the kitchen diner and back room and that he would need to close the patio doors after using them instead of leaving them open all day if the unit was on.

He is not happy as he likes to keep the door open, even when the temperature in the SW facing garden is in the high 30s. He does design to close the blinds, partly anyway but the door must stay open

I also couldn't get him to understand we would only use the air condioner if it was really hot, 30 deg plus.

Anyway, 24deg is nowhere near hot enough to need an air conditioner, especially if that is peak temperature. It was 40deg in the sun in our garden today in the afternoon, sun that was shinning directly onto the patio glass doors. It was stifling even with the blinds down, doors closed ( DS was asleep most of the day) and 2 fans running

Wouldn’t be wearing an oodie at 17c though! Work was 17c today and all of us were wearing short sleeves

This is the ‘Hot’ equivalent of having the heating cranked up so high you can walk around barefoot and in a T shirt all winter. No wonder the planet’s fucked.

Both DDs were in booty shorts and vests. One of them put on some pants a bit later on.

They may be demons, warmed by an inner core of hellfire.

When they came for the little aircon, they claimed the big one said it was 28C upstairs and that the dogs were melting (the dogs are Mexican, so I don't believe they cannot cope with 28C).
