Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

Oh dear!

Sucks to be them

Megifer · Yesterday 17:49

Tbf when you have a boss like that its hard to deviate from what you know they would see as a negative.

"Unless essential" is subjective. One can argue not wanting to piss off your manager and mark your cards in some way, however small, is essential.

You sound pretty immature to be gleeful about this.

SirChenjins · Yesterday 17:50

Whoops!! 😂

Someone will be along on a minute though to remind you that when it comes to promotion, they will get the job - as if that's the most important thing evva.

MandyMotherOfBrian · Yesterday 17:50

What a fucking weird thing to be gleeful about

Megifer · Yesterday 17:51

Yea my deviate/negative point doesnt make sense but you know what I mean

This, your post and the gleeful nastiness about them being stuck, what a horrible toxic place it must be. You’re honestly seeing this as ‘haha karma!’ ?
how absolutely unplanned and vindictive of you.

Blimms · Yesterday 17:53

They sound really daft, and you sound a little spiteful.

Purpleandping · Yesterday 17:53

I'd have been tempted to go in today for the benefit of the aircon tbh.

You sound really unpleasant.

MollyDigby1988 · Yesterday 17:54

Ive never understood people who delight in other peoples challenges.
It makes me think your life must be SO SHIT you take pleasure in other peoples misfortues

DidntLikeTheEnding · Yesterday 17:54

Hah! Karma is a bitch right enough.

Echobelly · Yesterday 17:56

Orrrr maybe they came in for aircon? Seems a bit harsh to assume everyone did it to suck up and that their messages are all performative about being in the office.

I went yesterday and will be doing so tomorrow (unless the Tubes are still screwed) My house is bloody boiling. Might do same as yesterday and go in and leave early, which made tube much easier.

UniquePinkSwan · Yesterday 17:58

Nothing wrong with going into work. I went into Amazon on overtime during Prime week because it has air conditioning and would be a far more pleasant experience.

I think the OP's point was that her employer advised to WFH but some people went in to be performative and have now come unstuck.

I'd like the aircon too but I'd have a lot of walking in the heat and the risk of cancelled train so haven't gone in.

Dingledanglebinglebongle · Yesterday 18:02

I’d love to say they’ll learn a lesson but they won’t. They’ll just whine about the heat/ the struggle they faced for a few weeks and continue to kiss ass for a while until some inevitable event makes them realise that they mean nothing to higher ups, that could be days, weeks or years from now. I wouldn’t call it karma, natural selection is more appropriate.

Yes but OP has decided they were performative when imo it's very likely they went in because it suited them to do so, possibly for the aircon.

I wfh full time but if I had an office to go to, I would be in it. There is nothing fun about wfh in this weather, my house is a fully insulated furnace.

Preppyprepper · Yesterday 18:06

I hope your WFH is permanently removed so you have to go into the office and actually do some work, rather than wasting time on mumsnet

Isn't it though?

Honestly, I never tire of looking into the strange Mumsnet fish bowl.

It's fascinating at times.

@Loveaghost some people don't have ideal home working conditions.
So have no choice.
Others prefer AC offices and if public transport is working why not.
It may not be all due to 'sucking up', and even if it was why are you been so joyful at them suffering.
Deeply unpleasant.
