Help me not to tell DP it's his own stupid fault

And offer words of encouragement.

First I'll say I don't have a perfect driving record and have points on my licemce, from doing 27 in a 20 limit without realising it wasn't 30.

DP has done similar, although this time it was 72 in a 50 (not 70) limit. He was pulled over by a police officer on a motorbike, who he felt enjoyed his job a little too much, and is incensed that he was only going at the speed of the traffic, why him etc (yes, I know I'm taking that with a pinch of salt).

Beyond that he's worried about what it will mean re points and/or a ban, mainly because of how it will affect work.

He wasn't given any paperwork at the time, and hasn't received any yet. At what point does he tell his insurance company?

And what will likely happen next?

I would be really surprised if they dealt with a 72 in a 50 by way of a FPN. I've seen people summonsed for less.

Maybe he'll get lucky.

Well, if they’re following guidelines that the force (if they do) claim to follow then it will. West Mercia actually provide a link to the NPCC document on their website and state that they follow it for example. I’ve had a FPN for 81mph in a 60mph limit before now. Hopefully the OP will update us.

Wow you’ve done a 180 since starting the thread!

Anyway seems like you’re almost certain what the outcome will be - so you can reassure him that all will be just fine.

Not sure I could be with someone who thinks police doing their job is power hungry

Well, that happens. You calm down and start thinking about practicalities, but right from the start I didn't want to be mad at him because it's not helpful. The same for him. He was feeling hard done by in the moment but he knows the officer was only doing his job.

I have to say I chuckled at this

Hmm. Aparently the officer told him he was lucky because if he'd been doing 2mph more it would have been the next category of offence. I wonder if that means this force will deal with it as a FPN. No paperwork yet.

Was this a variable speed limit on a motorway situation? If so he might be offered a motorway awareness course (similar to speed awareness) which is what I got when the overhead gantry changed to 60 and I was still doing 70

Interesting because he's SE with a very fluctuating income. Will they use his tax returns to calculate his income?

Keep your fingers crossed they do, rather than his real income.😀

Good one!!

Mcdhotchoc · 24/06/2026 20:40

Likely to get 4-6 points and a fine of a weeks pay but that's capped at £1000. 76mph is the normal point at which there is an automatic ban.
I'd assume but don't know for sure that it would make sense to plead guilty at the earliest point.
Re insurance he needs to read the wording carefully and make sure he answers it truthfully.

I couldn't even hazard a guess as to what his average weekly income is.

Too fast for a course but he will get fixed penalty £100 and 3 points. Need to tell insurance when points are endorsed. It won’t be court unless he asks for it or doesn’t respond to the fixed penalty.

So you won’t be impacted potentially by him not being able to drive? By his ability to work severely impacted? By the financial implications of premiums rocketing?

God knows why you’re SO invested in this thread. And being so bloody dramatic. It’s weird.

But anyway, he’s a DP not a DH. They might not live together. Or share finances.

His finances don't impact me.

And there we are

Doesn’t look like they do. Op in fact has absolutely no idea how much he evens earns. And the wouldn’t in any shape or form impacted even if he was banned or received a whoppa of a fine. So even if the op did call him very stupid, I doubt it would keep him up at night

WatermelonForBreakfast · 25/06/2026 06:14

I was reading Andy Burnhams wiki page and he did similar and got 6 points and a £1.2k fine or something.

Divebar2021 · 25/06/2026 06:32

Why didn’t you get a speed awareness course for your points OP? 27 in a 20???

WatermelonForBreakfast · 25/06/2026 06:38

Here it is from wiki:

In July 2022, Burnham was ordered to pay £1,984 in fines, charges and costs, and given six penalty points after he had admitted to driving at 78 mph (126 km/h) on a motorway where there was a temporarily reduced 40 mph (64 km/h) speed limit.

So not relevant to the Op

Because I'd had one for 34 in a 30 a few weeks earlier. (Speed camera at the bottom of a hill) More than 30 years driving and I managed to get my only two speeding tickets in the space of three weeks.

It's not like here's someone done for shoplifting or fly tipping 😂

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 10:20

No but he did 38mph above the speed so might as well be

Thank you for writing what I was wanting to say!

Certainly very obsessive and seems to be getting joy/satisfaction/pleasure at haranging the OP.

Strange, weird, dramatic at the very least.

Fwiw, I found the speed awareness course really interesting, although I was shocked at the lack of understanding/knowledge from some of the other participants, especially, yes, middle aged men who all had reasons the rules shouldn't apply to them.

His letter hasn't turned up yet.

Didn’t you then go and get another speeding conviction a few weeks later? I’d say it was your understanding that was left wanting

No, I didn't actually get booked onto the course until several weeks later.

Huh?

so you got the first speeding conviction which you attended a speed awareness course

and then in your words “a few weeks later”… you received another conviction for which you received a fine and points

correct?
