Money won't buy you love but it will buy you vanity projects.

Starmer: An Myghtern yw marow. Re vewo an Myghtern a'n North!

Conversely I have little time for posters who performatively post "reported" rather than just reporting. (To the extent that if I ever post "reported" it's as the tiniest joke to myself and hopefully the poster that has amused me 😀)

I don't think there is much more to be done when you have the impression - rightly or wrongly - that there can sometimes be a thumb on the scales of moderation.

I might have strong views on this, as I appear to have a stalker who has followed me across threads to spring out of the forest to air their grudges.

Media ownership and editorial aren't vanity projects.

It's a deliberate co-ordinated means to influence public opinion for the funders financial benefit.

Ed to add - very little difference between a billionaire throwing £5 million at politician and a billionaire buying some media and some conference speakers.

Although media owners get more control over what comes next and can swop in different talking heads when 1 fails to make headway.

I'm wondering if the Miliband hatred comes from the fact that GB Energy is looking to (very quietly) be doing all it was set to do. One of the more egregious examples of the lack of communication that dogged Starmer.

Solar providing 27% of the UKs metered demand at the moment (and wind at 9%). Add nuclear at 9% and that leaves 26% coming from gas.

Coal today is 0%

And total demand is 37.5GW

Astute readers will spot the use of "metered". This is because not all solar/wind power is metered. Some of it just gets fed into the grid before metering which works to just reduce that total load figure.

If Andy Burham is looking for an immediate big "thing" to make the 100 day truce work, he could do a lot worse than sort out the balcony solar regs and make the UK a leader.

Personally I have no faith whatsoever, as the UK is renowned for taking decades to regulate as a trusty stranglehold on innovation and progress/

The title alone is enough to scare me. I'm not an SNP fan but my main gripe is the lack of quality in politicians today. I wait to see what Andy and his chancellor will bring to the table.

Oh but it is vanity. Self obsessed with agendas that ultimately end up falling off the ultra right wing cliff. Same happens on the ultra left wing cliff. Politics is a plateau.

I think calling them vanity projects implies they only harm the funder.

The harm reaches well beyond their bank balances - it impacts discourse and deliberately inflames tensions.

Vanity projects are explicitly designed to create divisions and harm. It's gambling on a huge global scale. The consequences are terrifying and those engaged in it, know that. That's the whole point of them.

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 24/06/2026 11:33

They aren’t gambling.
There’s little to no risk to them.

It’s a thought out exercise in dominating the political landscape for their financial benefit.

placemats · 24/06/2026 11:35

They are gambling. Gambling lives, eco systems, democracy: it's a sick board game and if someone loses the dirt is out.

Oh dear. Badenoch must have found the jokey Burnham thread and taken it seriously. Graceless as usual.

Badenoch says Starmer has made many mistakes. But he has been let down by his chancellor and his energy secretary and his MPs too. They have abandoned him for “a pair of eyelashes and a black t-shirt”.

TemperanceWest · 24/06/2026 12:27

Rightly told off by the speaker:

Badenoch says Labour MPs are cheering, even though there are “400 knives” in Starmer’s back.

She says Labour MPs blocked welfare reform. “They are not Labour MPs, they are welfare MPs.”

Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker, intervenes. Referring to the knives remark, he says MPs should think about the language they use.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2026 12:28

Going by her PMQs perfrmance, Badenoch is just bad.

cardibach · 24/06/2026 12:32

She started out that PMQs being almost humorous. I had hopes. Then she proceeded to attack female cabinet ministers (with no real reason). She’s a nasty piece of work.

Too little too late.

RIP Jo Cox.

Indeed 😊

In football terms for Badenoch: You're shit and you know you are!

Bridget Phillipson deserves all she gets as far as I’m concerned. Her nasty policy caused so much harm to parents and children for no gain. In a poll of teachers zero thought she was doing well.

Do you agree with Badenoch that Phillipson is a "spiteful class warrior"?
