What ideas do you have for achieving that? There needs to be a genuine demand for that employment in order for it to be meaningful.

They said gainful, not meaningful

But ideas would be welcome

I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Badenoch does have a sense of humour, although hers seems mostly based on cruelty. So it will be interesting to see how she reacts.

Raven08 · 25/06/2026 15:10

I think my issue with ABs coronation is the lack of scrutiny? The lack of electoral process.
I think a contest can be really helpful for that, even if the result ends up being the same.

Raven08 · 25/06/2026 15:12

AB is going to have questions on the legitimacy of his premiership from day one.
Interested to see what his response will be.

I think you can make a case that "laughing at things" isn't necessarily demonstration of a sense of humour, In the same way as "being leader of the opposition" is not necessarily commensurate with being Prime Minister (although we note with smiles that it's something Keir Starmer achieved).

"Them's the rules".

However, given how other components are moving, he may have a bit of a internecine edge to the debate.

Electoral reform is going to be a hot topic moving forwards. That could throw up some interesting dynamics.

TemperanceWest · 25/06/2026 15:29

I know polls are meaningless this far out from a GE, but still great to see Reform slipping.

Now add that to a push to put electoral reform on the agenda for the next election and you can sense why Farage is so rattled. And it seems Farage being rattled may be better fir ratings than the smooth Farage spread the public have got so used to these past centuries.

Somewhere, in heaven, Mrs Merton is saying "So what is it about Andy Burnhams popularity that upsets you Nigel" into the void.

Private Eye reports over 50 peers have signed a "furious missive to the National Portrait Gallery," angry about its decision to exhibit 'Persistence'. The film is critical of Cromwell's mass killings in Ireland.

Tory peer Toby Young signed it. Yep, founder/director of the Free Speech Union...

placemats · 25/06/2026 15:39

I prefer a smooth transition rather than the going through the motions election when the outcome is going to be obvious. Plus Burnham has to work with the PLP the majority of whom have given him their overwhelming acceptance and support.

I'm surprised half of them were awake or aware of what they were signing.

Hopefully it's not just a blip.

As a NPG member I’m furious about that. I really wanted to see it. How dare a few unelected old has beens decide I can’t? First the blocking of the Assisted Dying Act, now this. It’s time it was abolished and replaced with something fit for purpose for the 21st century.

We have a thunderstorm warning for tonight and temps forecast to drop 10 degrees - 36 down to 26. Looking forward to it.

The undermining of Burnham has well and truly started. I saw a meme this morning that was about the company his wife works for being awarded a lucrative contract from the Manchester mayor's office.

Whatever the truth, or not, behind it, it's the sort of thing that needs to be dealt with before he is waived into the PM job. Aside from the lack of a mandate, he will also be seen as another Johnson making his mates millionaires.

TemperanceWest · 25/06/2026 15:54

More info. It seems the film is critical of Churchill and that is the part they objected to.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court rules 6-3 in favor of the Trump admin on Temporary Protected Status, blocking the lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds, allowing DHS to strip over 350,000 people of legal status even though they utterly failed to follow the required legal procedures.
^^
The Supreme Court ALSO gives Trump another pass on racism, declaring that his horrific and bigoted comments against Haitians are actually not evidence of racism and that the plaintiffs cannot show evidence of racial bias, essentially plugging their ears and letting Trump spew filth as policy.
^^
The upshot of this decision is that once it goes into effect, hundreds of thousands of people who have been living and working legally in the United States, some for many years, and many who entered completely legally, will lose their work permits and deportation protections.
^^
Justice Kagan, in dissent, emphasizes that Alito and the majority are too cowardly to even print Donald Trump's bigoted statements in their opinion, only giving them summaries which drastically downplay their severity.
^^
She is right. The majority is endorsing racism.
^^
Trump once again benefits from a Supreme Court that is too cowardly to call the president a racist. Alito won't even print a single one of his statements (because he knows how bad they are) and instead tries to frame them as not "overtly racial," which, to be blunt, is BS.

It's ironic that their faux defence of Churchill probably make more people think he was a bastard then if they just left the film screen.

You know where you aren't allowed to poke fun of your national heroes ?

Soviet Russia, North Korea and China. The same Venn diagram with human rights phobics.

Sorry piggy. I really sympathise. I can't take much more of it. I have just pegged a duvet cover over the living room blind to try and keep the sun out a bit more as it is coming round. It is like living in a squat.

He’s squeaky clean over that. It seems he recused himself from any discussion and decision that involved her company. Not that the muck spreaders will care about that.
