We have a local Storm Watch group on Facebook and they posted this earlier this morning:
A lot of weather to come over the next 48 hours, Some areas will see more storms then others with more updates during the day.
The UK and Ireland face one of the most dangerous setups for severe thunderstorms the region has seen in modern history.
Storms today will be capable of producing hail up to the size of golf balls, potentially even tennis balls, along with damaging winds. The greatest risk of an isolated strong tornado lies over Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland.
This is an exceptionally rare severe weather setup for this part of the planet.
This is complex with the hot air and cold weather fronts running into each other.
Weather forecast valid from 8pm this evening going into Friday morning
Later today a decaying cold front lifting north will provide sufficient lift in a very moist and hot environment to generate elevated thunderstorms across the southwest before building north through Wales and into the Midlands along the boundary of very hot air!!!
With CAPE exceeding 2500-3000J/KG widely across the UK this level is rare for the UK!!!
The lower atmosphere is very capped but the cold front introducing colder air aloft combined with nocturnal cooling will make for a very unstable environment above what is essentially a pressure cooker waiting to pop.
