Pleasantly warm here (West country).

I really hope that Burnham (assuming he is going to be unchallenged) iz undergoing a crash course in the PMs job. He needs to get across all the briefs and ensure that if he removes key people that are currently in place and running their departments according to plans discussed in cabinet, implementing the changes and working to achieve the manifesto pledges, that the people he replaces them with are fully briefed and ready to go

We had a black hole in government during the tories last term, they achieved the sum of nothing, unless you include enriching their mates. We do not need more of the same with labour.

I don't like Burnham, I don't like the games he's played and I want him challenged (a real challenge, not a fake one for the optics) but if he is going to just walk into the top job he had better be prepared. I'm not convinced by him though.

placemats · 24/06/2026 19:35

Burnham will be given a better transition than the new cabinet members got in 2024.

Lalgarh · 24/06/2026 19:59

He supposedly thought he had till September to prepare.

At the by election count, he actually walked off after results were declared BC he got the news that Starmer was ready to resign as leader the next week

https://nitter.net/Steven_Swinford/status/2069348644197699989#m

So he's got just under a month to get everything together as Starmer knew he'd have no authority to get anything pushed through otherwise if he stayed on. "Building a plane in mid flight" as it gets described in another tweet

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2026 20:13

I think Burnham might have the nous to have better advisers than Starmer.

Having a ginger cordial and tonic here, I'm not a big drinker.

Efacsen · 24/06/2026 20:33

Burnham is meeting key figures in the civil service to aid the transition to the post he's not been appointed to yet

God. He could at least wait. I can't help feeling he is in for a massive fall.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2026 20:44

He has an invasion of the South to plan.

Dragon, horse, boat?

The bayeaux tapestry is an embroidery.
There was a fabulous homage to it in Belfast national museum telling the story of Game of Thrones 😃

I'd be furious if I were either a labour MP or labour member.
Hubris, much?

Raven08 · 24/06/2026 20:49

I think Darren Jones was mentioned on this thread as a potential contest rival?
He's declared for AB too today.
Must be some big jobs being dangled....

Efacsen · 24/06/2026 20:50

IDK seems a good idea to me if he's going to be PM in about 3 weeks - Starmer has agreed it - should have said that

.

placemats · 24/06/2026 20:54

It's done and dusted. A smooth transition will take place and the media can froth all they like. Labour is getting on with the job.

Or not 81 letters of support.

I agree with you @Efacsen.

Pims here. There are as some lemonade needed using up. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I think it's something that any prospective candidates are entitled to do so they vie for the job with an idea of what's what.

Raven08 · 24/06/2026 21:46

Well, no matter what anyone thinks, it appears a done deal.
The last time labour did this it didn't end well as I recall.
I hope it works out better this time...at least its 3 years til the next GE.

MaybeNotBob · 24/06/2026 21:48

Belated tax. Cat lying in front of the fan, and then not doing much more when we decided to venture outside once it had cooled down.

The oil and gas industry is proving to be a very tough nut to crack. Yes it's late, and no where near enough to offset the danger of climate change and the harm it does to health and the economy.

I have misgivings too, but I think we are in the minority!

Yes, he is entitled to briefings from civil servants etc at the appropriate time, but he is acting as though he is PM in waiting before the leadership contest has even been announced and I don't like it.

I will of course forgive him if he turns things around, which I sincerely hope he does.

Yeah.
Pretty much my feeling.
I'm wary though. Very wary.
