What modern habits of younger generations do you hate the most? Lighthearted

Lighthearted.
What are the things that you can't stand today that just reminds you that you don't understand younger generations any more (I am 40s)? Not dieing on a hill for anything, just sharing some grumbles.

I'll go first:

Boys and men who walk around without a shirt the moment the sun is out. I am talking high street, trains, buses. Nobody wants to see you in a state you are in when you take out the bins, Steven. Bonus points for "going out" in crocs.

Crocs/flipflops + socks for anything more than taking out your bins, haha. This one is unisex, looks crap on both men and women. Ew.

Chatting with your phone on speakerphone. Especially in a restaurant or on public transport.

Sorry, boo. Your life is not that interesting. No one else cares.

Photographing the food until it goes cold for your 52 followers.

Forgottenmyphone · 21/06/2026 16:42

Walking around everywhere with AirPods in - shops, the school run, doctors surgery etc….

AgathaX · 21/06/2026 16:44

I don't think walking around shirtless is a younger generation thing. I'm late 50s and remember it from being a child.
I don't like it either though.

LadyVienetta · 21/06/2026 16:45

For me it is the now widespread phrase of "it's giving". Every time someone around me uses it, I rage inside a bit, to me it desperately needs more words... Giving what? Giving you the distinct impression of something? Giving you the feeling of something? Giving you the what of what exactly? It's giving princess? Giving WHAT of a princess? Oh, I hate it with a passion.

+1 for speakerphones, and listening to whatever you want to listen to in public. (I don't care about your conversation on the bus, nor do I care about what music you are into on the beach)

Megapint · 21/06/2026 17:42

I actually think men/ boys walking around shirtless is less common than it used to be. Socks and sandals isn't new either,.my dad was wearing socks and slides in the 80's.

TallSturdyGirls · 21/06/2026 17:45

Hairlessness apart from beards on men. Naked fannies, still find them weird.

I complained to a woman in her 70s (!!!!) doing this in a cafe when she and I were the only customers. Her call was 45 minutes, too. She told me it was a special occasion because he son had just arrived in Australia! I told her having a nice quiet breakfast was a special occasion for me…..

Supersleepysheepy · 21/06/2026 17:48

Sip, sip, sip...

Yes, hydration is important, but you will be fine for a little bit without your bottle!

Darragon · 21/06/2026 17:49

What’s with all the ageist threads this week? I thought ageism was off the agenda these days? Or does that only work in one direction, because if this thread was about older people everyone would be outraged.

I was going to say the same thing. Men just seem to have to take their shirts off the second the temperature goes above about 15 degrees.

Actually the first person I ever saw having a conversation on a speakerphone was at least in her 50s.

I don't hate it, but I think an obvious thing that youngsters do is wear headphones. It makes the Dr Who episodes with the Cybermen where everyone has headphones/earbuds on and stops in the street to listen to the same joke quite prescient!

I agree.

Silverbirchleaf · 21/06/2026 19:04

In the past, if you were in your car and turning into your drive or place of work, people would stop and let you in. Now they carry on walking, probably because they’re either looking at their phone, or are wearing headphones so they haven’t heard the car,

Asuperblyfeauturedroomandexcellentboiledpotatoes · 21/06/2026 19:06

Listening to things without headphones. It makes my teeth itch.
Especially if it's tiktok. Those short bursts of sound as people scroll. Fuck oooooff

Nowt weird about my naked Fanny! It’s the source of much joy! 🤣

DeeNiall · 21/06/2026 19:08

Walking while looking at their phone.

Waitingfordoggo · 21/06/2026 19:09

Weird ways of communicating (because of smartphones, presumably). I know quite a few that just monologue at you as if they’re leaving you a voicemail. One young relative makes no eye contact either- just stares straight ahead while monologuing and not allowing space for the other person to talk back (person in question is NT).

Totally agree .

Whataflippincircus · 21/06/2026 19:10

Continually checking their mobile phones.

mathanxiety · 21/06/2026 19:11

Agree with 'it's giving'.

Also the spread of the exaggerated glottal stop into regions where there never was a glottal stop up to now. You hear it all over SM in words like buttons, little, kittens, etc.

canuckup · 21/06/2026 19:12

Checking their phone, especially when in company

I can't get passed it

I was going to say the same thing. It was more prevalent in the 80s and 90s than it is now.

Pickledonion1999 · 21/06/2026 19:15

Pouting selfies everywhere, young lads with their jeans hanging low and underwear all showing, I honestly want to just go and yank them up ! Young women in the supermarket in their Pj's. Young people saying "can I get" when ordering.
