What modern habits of younger generations do you hate the most? Lighthearted

Lighthearted.
What are the things that you can't stand today that just reminds you that you don't understand younger generations any more (I am 40s)? Not dieing on a hill for anything, just sharing some grumbles.

I'll go first:

Boys and men who walk around without a shirt the moment the sun is out. I am talking high street, trains, buses. Nobody wants to see you in a state you are in when you take out the bins, Steven. Bonus points for "going out" in crocs.

Crocs/flipflops + socks for anything more than taking out your bins, haha. This one is unisex, looks crap on both men and women. Ew.

Tracksuit bottoms halfway down the arse so they waddle along! Looks stupid and uncomfortable.

The constant obsession with water. Bringing water bottles everywhere, even for short trips. I know hydration is important and I'm not a nutritionist but I think its one hell of a coincidence that everyone became obsessed with how much water they needed right around the time someone had the idea to sell us bottled water. Youngsters grew up with it so it's normal for them

My dh is like this and he’s 58!!

Stay home if you want to sit in silence.

There’s a difference between “wanting to sit in silence” and “not wanting to listen to a phone conversation on speakerphone”.

Using audible tech in public without headphones is rude.

SirChenjins · 21/06/2026 21:02

The endless posing for photos. When I was young we smiled, someone pressed the button, the photo was taken. Now there's whole body poses, multiple photos taken, each one inspected, then more photos taken - and we've all to wait while it's done. I especially hate it when they block the street or the view while they're fannying about. I just walk through the shot or stand and take a photo of the view beside them, my DC are mortified.

youaremysunshinemyonly · 21/06/2026 21:05

I teach university students and at least three out of a class of 10 will go to the loo in the last 10 minutes of the session (and then return). Why?! They can't all be ill/flooding etc

Also "answering" the phone without saying "hello" or anything...just picking up and then ...silence....

Agree with PP where you're having a whatsapp conversation and they also just don't respond.

Sip, sip, sip...

Yes, hydration is important, but you will be fine for a little bit without your bottle!

This made me laugh. My DC have ESBs (Emotional Support Bottles).

In the past, if you were in your car and turning into your drive or place of work, people would stop and let you in. Now they carry on walking, probably because they’re either looking at their phone, or are wearing headphones so they haven’t heard the car,

Actually, in this situation, pedestrians have right of way. In any event, any courteous driver would allow pedestrians to cross. Surely you can wait for a few seconds.

I think that change is a good one. The driver is cutting across the pedestrian's path, so the driver should wait.

However, many drivers now seem to think pavements are car parks so it's swings and roundabouts.

Every other thing being 'triggering'. The word 'triggering' literally triggers me!

What’s with all the ageist threads this week? I thought ageism was off the agenda these days? Or does that only work in one direction, because if this thread was about older people everyone would be outraged.

Absolutely. Any hint of any criticism to older generations and there are cries of ageism but not the other way it seems…

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 21/06/2026 20:57

The absence of the word “to”. Can we go Tesco? I’m going to go the gym. Sets my teeth on edge!

I agree.

Yes. And isn't a trigger warning triggering in itself because they usually mention what the article or programme or whatever is about.

WonderingWanda · 21/06/2026 21:20

I don't really get Snapchat. My teen ds spends a good 10 mins sending snaps of half his face whenever he gets in the car with me. He also pulls a silly face in photo's. Also the sagging of the jeans / shorts / school trousers although maybe that's not new.

tourdefrance · 21/06/2026 21:22

Checking phone / smartwatch is probably the one that annoys me most on a daily basis.
Playing music, having a phone call or scrolling through Insta / Tiktok on loudspeaker occur less frequently as I'm not on public transport that often these days. Like pp I have asked people of a variety of ages to turn it down / put some headphones in, including grandparents for their grandkids on a train. I would not have objected to them chatting / reading a book / playing a game together but electronic noise is completely different.
Conversely, I don't expect a conversation from WhatsApp anymore than I do from email or text. It's meant to be asynchronous.

Someone having a loud 45 minute conversation with her son over the phone - in a public cafe, is very inconsiderate. (And I am guessing she was LOUD because this kind of 'must talk in public so everyone can hear me' type are ALWAYS loud!)

Go home if you want to have a lengthy 45 minute phone conversation with someone. I don't want to hear you. I want to have my coffee and cake (or piece of fruit) in peace. Or if I'm with someone, I want to be able to have a conversation, without some loud obnoxious 'my conversation MUST be heard' kind of twonk disturbing the calm environment.

I feel like I'm in the minority of people who hates taking calls in public. I don't want everyone to know my business!

"Bro" in place of punctuation

Petrine · 21/06/2026 21:30

Being unable to talk without using ‘like’ every four words.

Nowt weird about my naked Fanny! It’s the source of much joy! 🤣

Hurray! As someone who has enjoyed a few fannies over the years it wouldn't be for me but genuinely glad yours is happy 😂

Lotsofpie · 21/06/2026 22:10

How are people classifying "younger generation here"? I'm a millennial, and a lot of the stuff described so far is not new - saying "like", owning a water bottle, taking photos etc.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 21/06/2026 22:44

AgathaX · 21/06/2026 16:44

I don't think walking around shirtless is a younger generation thing. I'm late 50s and remember it from being a child.
I don't like it either though.

I’m in my late 40s, and when i was younger, seeing topless men was commonplace.
You hardly see it these days.

MauriceTheMussel · 21/06/2026 22:56

Oh, it’s not just the younguns that do speakerphone in public. I’ve had people in their 30s and 50s/60s do this right next to me. I find when it’s full volume and they’re scrolling Instagram far worse than them having a boring ass convo with their mate

Kickinthenostalgia · 21/06/2026 22:57

As soon as I saw the title was coming on here to say crocs and socks 😂
I hate when they rehash something from the past and think that they invented it
“ like I was doing that/wearing that before you born hun”

the llama style haircut

i have to admit, I use the ‘it’s giving” and so so has left the chat…
but slay and ‘main character energy’ grinds my gears ☺️

also that they get offended about everything 🤦🏻

pigalow27 · 21/06/2026 23:05

Using female pronouns for items of clothing or make up such as ‘Oh isn’t she so glowy? I love her texture!’

Hotandpointy · 21/06/2026 23:09

Not so sure walking around with headphones on is new, I’ve been doing that since the 80s!
Walkman, Discman, MP3 player, IPod, now IPhone, I don’t think I’m alone.

What’s annoying is NOT using headphones!

soundsys · 21/06/2026 23:11

Their inability to make bloody plans! It’s all “could do” or “probs”. I find it exasperating! Like, if you need me to be somewhere you need to tell me what time you’re going to be there. I’m not just magically going to appear when you need me!
