What modern habits of younger generations do you hate the most? Lighthearted

Lighthearted.
What are the things that you can't stand today that just reminds you that you don't understand younger generations any more (I am 40s)? Not dieing on a hill for anything, just sharing some grumbles.

I'll go first:

Boys and men who walk around without a shirt the moment the sun is out. I am talking high street, trains, buses. Nobody wants to see you in a state you are in when you take out the bins, Steven. Bonus points for "going out" in crocs.

Crocs/flipflops + socks for anything more than taking out your bins, haha. This one is unisex, looks crap on both men and women. Ew.

Hairlessness apart from beards on men. Naked fannies, still find them weird.

That was a thing in the 90s as well though.

Being unable to talk without using ‘like’ every four words.

I'm 46 and have been a major culprit of that since i was a teen. I picked it up from the 'Valley Girls" stereotypes from movies in the 80s/90s

I feel like I'm in the minority of people who hates taking calls in public. I don't want everyone to know my business!

"Bro" in place of punctuation

I hate taking phone calls anywhere 🤣

WonderingWanda · 21/06/2026 21:20

I don't really get Snapchat. My teen ds spends a good 10 mins sending snaps of half his face whenever he gets in the car with me. He also pulls a silly face in photo's. Also the sagging of the jeans / shorts / school trousers although maybe that's not new.

Snapchat has been around since 2011 though. My kids used to like the "funny face" filters when they were little and would constantly steal my phone which drove me mad!

For me it is the now widespread phrase of "it's giving". Every time someone around me uses it, I rage inside a bit, to me it desperately needs more words... Giving what? Giving you the distinct impression of something? Giving you the feeling of something? Giving you the what of what exactly? It's giving princess? Giving WHAT of a princess? Oh, I hate it with a passion.

+1 for speakerphones, and listening to whatever you want to listen to in public. (I don't care about your conversation on the bus, nor do I care about what music you are into on the beach)

Edited

Similarly, “I can’t even”. Can’t even what? Finish the bloody sentence!

And “hits different”. Oh do fuck off.

iluvlucy · 21/06/2026 23:49

Ok .. I’m old… BUT.. We used to meet a man.. he asked us out . If we went out with him on a couple of dates , cinema/dinner/ activity. .. and it went well . Then you were girlfriend and boyfriend… these days ‘will you be my girlfriend/boyfriend is a ‘thing’ almost like a milestone like getting engaged… this happens MONTHS after being together.. sleeping together spending time together.. even meeting the parents … so fucking strange . It’s not always the boys being unwilling to commit, girls have bought into it too. (Or are they just being cool)

Walking around everywhere with AirPods in - shops, the school run, doctors surgery etc….

I do this when I don’t have the kids with me but it’s because I’m ND and find too much noise overwhelming 🤣 the noise cancellation brings me peace and it’s set to a setting where I can hear mild outside noise

vaping pisses me off. Its everywhere all the time. Just clouds of awful smells

Both my (late 20-something) DC do this.....

I will be talking to them on WhatsApp, and we will exchange about 3 messages each over maybe 5-7 minutes, and I will send a 4th one (often in response to something they have said, or I will be asking a question,) and they just don't answer............... ??? 😕 I wait about 5-10 minutes and then say 'Are you OK?'

Nothing.

10 minutes more I say 'are you still there?' Then about 2 hours later I get a response....... 'Oooh sorry I had to do X, Y, or Z.'

Happens around 1 in 3 times I talk to them on WhatsApp. It's really weird! 😆

Sometimes one of them will send a WhatsApp message 'hi mum, are you busy on Friday afternoon.........?' I message back within 2 minutes, (saying 'yes I am why?' Or 'no I'm not why?') And they don't respond. They've gone! I think 'FFS you JUST messaged me! Where are you? LOL!!! It's sometimes several hours before they respond.

WHY DO THEY DO THIS?!!!!!!!! 😫

I hear you!
I get "mum, can you pick me up/"
Me (less than a minute later): yes, where are you?
Then......nothing

TheShyMumX · 22/06/2026 00:14

“I’m really into skincare”

That was my nieces reply when I asked what she would like for her birthday! I’m 30 so don’t consider myself too old however I am twice her age
But I’ll be honest it did slightly confuse me because what do you mean you are into skincare??😂 I also moisturise, exfoliate, have various creams and lotions for various things not because I’m ‘into’ skincare but purely just because I have skin that needs caring for. Similar I guess in the way I have a bladder that needs emptying so I guess I am also into having a wee?🤔

The need to write "Lighthearted" so often.

Girls - wearing socks over tights
Boys - mullets and monk haircuts
Both - filming themselves carrying out the most mundane of activities and uploading the videos to YouTube

StartupRepair · 22/06/2026 00:39

Came on to say the posing. My sister turned to me in Venice and said 'they are just shameless, aren't they?'.

This is quite funny to me because I feel like my mum is a bit more like you. If she doesn’t reply to me she’ll say ‘sorry was in the garden’ or something like that and I’m like okkkk that’s fine you don’t need to explain yourself to me whereas I feel the younger generation view WhatsApp messages as more fluid back and forth with no expectation of an immediate reply or an end to the conversation. We just dip back in when we can Grin

If she started messaging me asking me if I was ok because I hadn’t replied I’d think she’d lost it!

This is all said with a smile btw and no offence meant whatsoever. It’s definitely just a generational thing.

things being called pieces! Paintings ‘This piece was inspired by…’ clothing ‘This piece was found at a charity shop’ furniture, antiques of any kind, jewellery you get the piece oops I mean picture! Drives me bonkers

LoserWinner · 22/06/2026 01:02

Refusal to use cash. I get that most stuff is done by card/ bank transfer, but I know at least four people who ask if I can pay cash and they’ll ping me the money, rather than them having to use the cashpoint close by to take out a tenner.

Happyjoe · 22/06/2026 01:09

Dayglo white teeth implants or whatever they are. Horrific but handy as a nightlight I suppose.

That's not new! Been around since I was at art college many moons ago (Gen X) and it was used then to describe art. Same for furniture.

Im old and due to my sight I’m a pedestrian and give way because walking into a car because I’m more vulnerable and can’t be 100% sure car will stop.

I see lots of people walking, cycling and driving with heads down in phones but nothing to do with age.

Curious what is the law on this in England- does a dropped kerb mean it’s a road and I give way?

It's fine to keep walking afaik, it's up to the driver not to run you over regardless if their driveway.

ChubbyPuffling · 22/06/2026 07:29

"That is so aesthetic"... might it be aesthetically pleasing? aesthetically jarring? - always used to need a qualifier, now appears to just mean "I like the look of that"

I complained to a woman in her 70s (!!!!) doing this in a cafe when she and I were the only customers. Her call was 45 minutes, too. She told me it was a special occasion because he son had just arrived in Australia! I told her having a nice quiet breakfast was a special occasion for me…..

What is the difference between that and if her son was sitting at the table with her? Nobody has the right to silence in a cafe.

SisSuffragette · 22/06/2026 08:56

Covering their faces in photos...
Arghhh, just don't take / be in the photo then

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/06/2026 08:59

UhOhRatPoo · 22/06/2026 08:30

Phones are designed to emphasise the frequencies that are easiest for us to hear. They also eliminate some other frequencies making audio sound tinny and unnatural and therefore irritating. Have you not noticed this?

The woman was 7 or 8m away and yet I could hear every word of both sides of the conversation as if I was sitting with her. That is not the case when other people are sitting in the cafe, even when they are much nearer to me.

Enterthewolves · 22/06/2026 09:00

Silverbirchleaf · 21/06/2026 19:04

In the past, if you were in your car and turning into your drive or place of work, people would stop and let you in. Now they carry on walking, probably because they’re either looking at their phone, or are wearing headphones so they haven’t heard the car,

Might also be because pedestrians have priority now - change in Highway Code rules?

Sip, sip, sip...

Yes, hydration is important, but you will be fine for a little bit without your bottle!

This 💯!
