What modern habits of younger generations do you hate the most? Lighthearted

Lighthearted.
What are the things that you can't stand today that just reminds you that you don't understand younger generations any more (I am 40s)? Not dieing on a hill for anything, just sharing some grumbles.

I'll go first:

Boys and men who walk around without a shirt the moment the sun is out. I am talking high street, trains, buses. Nobody wants to see you in a state you are in when you take out the bins, Steven. Bonus points for "going out" in crocs.

Crocs/flipflops + socks for anything more than taking out your bins, haha. This one is unisex, looks crap on both men and women. Ew.

@Zov Very similar scenario with my 20 yo and 18 yo. It’s infuriating! Sometimes DD asks me a question and I reply and then just….crickets. I’ve told her I find it rude but she just says ‘sorry, I forgot’. How does she forget when she has got the phone in her hand and looks at the screen to see my message? Surely she could just instantly reply ‘Thanks’. She does have ADHD to be fair but then so do I. 😂

LOL @ crickets! @Waitingfordoggo ! 😆

My DC message me, and I answer back (as I say usually within 2 minutes, sometimes within 30 seconds,) and they don't answer. Message unread. They've gone. I'm like 'what the ?????' Like 'where are you, you were right there 17 seconds ago!' 😆

When they're at our house, their phones are within 3 feet of them ALL THE TIME. Yet when I say 'I did message you back right away but you disappeared,' they say 'oh I left my phone in the bedroom,' or 'I had to go out to Aldi,' or 'I went off to get changed and didn't notice your message.' DUDE, it was 17 seconds after yours! You probably still had your phone in your hand! 😆

It’s giving ageism 😉

I hate voice notes and will never get on board with them. One of my students asked me to record verbal feedback rather than writing it for her. I did it but it was weird and I didn’t enjoy it.

“Wait, what?”

😆 I say that now and again. I hate myself for it. 😆

I first heard it in Stranger Things.

I am in my late 50s. 😆

'It's giving Gen Z.......'

ARGH! 😂 I hate this! 😧

Refusal to use cash. I get that most stuff is done by card/ bank transfer, but I know at least four people who ask if I can pay cash and they’ll ping me the money, rather than them having to use the cashpoint close by to take out a tenner.

No idea where my bank card is, haven’t used one for years. I take my phone out to pay for everything and if somewhere doesn’t have contactless they’ve lost my business. Done this for years. I don’t even own a purse.

Stay home if you want to sit in silence.

No, I don't think I will ta.

And we're not talking about sitting in silence. And you know it.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 21/06/2026 23:31

I hate taking phone calls anywhere 🤣

Exactly.Taking/making lengthy phone calls IN PUBLIC, and speaking loudly (as people who have lengthy calls in public do,) is attention seeking and arrogant behaviour. People who do this are the sort of people that many people will walk a mile out of their way to avoid.

I think the woman in the cafe who made the 45 minute phone call in the cafe (that the poster @dizzydizzydizzy talked about earlier) might be on the thread. 👀

Grapejam8 · 22/06/2026 09:34

I've just had a everything shower

I think i understand it but a shower is just a shower whether you have a quick shower or spend ages washing your hair and shaving etc

StooOrangeyForCrows · 22/06/2026 09:43

Giving their kids utterly ridiculous names that will be a lifelong challenge for them.

Yeah that's another one. Saddling them with a name for life that no-one will ever pronounce correctly, nor ever spell correctly!

Bexxleigh, Jaydunn, Kasspar, Shinayde, Emmaleigh, PLEASE STOP! 😖

angelos02 · 22/06/2026 09:48

Beginning every sentence with 'so'. Using 'like' as a filler. Must make interviewing candidates very easy as anyone that does either of those would be an instant no as it looks so uneducated and unprofessional.

PaperSpider · 22/06/2026 09:49

The stupid waggly hands etc on insta / TikTok…

A couple of years ago during an intense spot of gardening I remembered that I needed milk (and a box of Magnums) so I jumped in the car to go into the local Lidl, getting out of the car I realised that I still had my crocs on! Black coffee and a suck on an ice cube were the order of the day because I was to ashamed to go into the store in crocs, even very new proper crocs, not the Lidl knock-offs!

And then go NC when this is pointed out. Family member named their kid after sanitary towels FFS so (in answer to the OP) also going NC with their parents over ridiculously minor stuff and then realising this means they won't be in the will and trying to suck back up again at the point they realise this

Agree with 'it's giving'.

Also the spread of the exaggerated glottal stop into regions where there never was a glottal stop up to now. You hear it all over SM in words like buttons, little, kittens, etc.

It’s because they want to sound ‘edgy’ and non-posh. Plenty of people who would never have spoken like that seem to feel the need to do it.

DustyGrapevine · 22/06/2026 10:09

WonderingWanda · 21/06/2026 21:20

I don't really get Snapchat. My teen ds spends a good 10 mins sending snaps of half his face whenever he gets in the car with me. He also pulls a silly face in photo's. Also the sagging of the jeans / shorts / school trousers although maybe that's not new.

I joined Snapchat so my niece could share photos of her baby. I thought I was quite up on social media but I’m stumped by Snapchat. The most confusing is snaps of people purporting to be asleep with the caption “can’t get up this morning” or similar. I was trying to reply (rather awkwardly) to these until I discovered these are broadcast to all their contacts!

oliviaAustin · 22/06/2026 10:17

Young women (never seen a boy do it) walk around my city centre in tight denim shorts (thats fine) but with the button and fly down and splayed to either side so you can see their belly and knickers! They pair it with tight cami tops and the whole outfit would be fine (not flattering but that’s not my judgement to make) if it didn’t look like they’d just gone for a wee and forgotten to do their clothes up.

I see men of 40-50-60 ogling these teen girls pants and open shorts and it makes me want to shake them. They all have the figures for outrageously pretty or cool outfits but no they all look like clones with their fly down.

WilliamsandWatsonTooLateNSoul · 22/06/2026 10:30

Surely nobody called their child body form
Sorry couldn't resist.😂

WilliamsandWatsonTooLateNSoul · 22/06/2026 10:32

That was for the pp that said someone named their kid after a sanitary towel.

PurpleCanary · 22/06/2026 10:35

My kids are ticking all these boxes, DD with her flies undone on her denim shorts, being “into” skincare, calling things aesthetic, having everything shower, DS with his alpaca hair and sagging trousers, calling me bro or brah, answering the phone without saying hello and hanging up without saying bye.
Can I add.. asking for a “rat girl dinner” (plate of random snacks) and describing everything that is annoying as “long”.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 22/06/2026 19:56

I have more: “elevated”, “curated”, “era”, and “I. Am. Obsessed. OB.SESSED!”

Grrr.

Chatting with your phone on speakerphone. Especially in a restaurant or on public transport.

Sorry, boo. Your life is not that interesting. No one else cares.

But this isn’t limited to a specific generation.

TheShyMumX · 22/06/2026 23:55

It seems that all generations have things they do that are annoying to the next! I have an older generation annoyance that was brought to my attention today. And it really seems to be older women and not younger women or men
PICKY BITS
My mum invited us round this evening for picky bits. AKA a picnic in the garden. A sausage roll, scotch egg, some small fancy nonsense from M&S and some veg cut into sticks… a picnic

Silverbirchleaf · 21/06/2026 19:04

In the past, if you were in your car and turning into your drive or place of work, people would stop and let you in. Now they carry on walking, probably because they’re either looking at their phone, or are wearing headphones so they haven’t heard the car,

I assume that’s because the Highway Code has changed and pedestrians have priority. Younger people will have only learnt the new version.
