Dover. Amazing castle. Beautiful train ride in. Town centre tired and somehow sad.

It's been struggling ever since the Channel Tunnel began drawing people away from the ferries.

But wasdale has many mountains… pillar and yew barrow on one side, lingmell before you get to scafell pike. Scafell to the right. You said you got to Wasdale and turned back.

Are you actually ok?? 🤔

I drove through Lye in the West Midlands recently. I think the high street was the most intimidating place i have ever been

It's known locally not to stop in traffic in Lye or you won't have any wheels left 🤣
Even the whole high street of Indian takeaways have evacuated, the area is not nice anymore.
I got off the bus on the bypass recently to wait for the next one, I NEVER feel worried about walking anywhere at night but there was something very unnervy about being in Lye by myself.

Wick mentioned a lot, can't disagree even though it's my home! For me lowestoft and peterborough are serious contenders.

Why is blackpool any worse than any other of the derelict seaside towns we have on these fair islands?
I mean we are awash with these kinds of places, I would have thought that at least Blackpool has some kind of personality or vibe that the ghost towns dont. Am surprised to see so many voices against it!

Dungeness. Famous for being the UK's only officially classified desert, it features a stark shingle landscape dotted with abandoned fishing boats, distinctive wooden houses, two lighthouses, and the imposing Dungeness nuclear power stations. I felt really depressed when I went there.

I really like Dungeness, the weirdness appeals to me. I feel like I'm in one of those cheap 1960s post apocalyptic films. I am quite strange though.

The problem there is that the station was built to serve the now long gone ferry terminal, so it's in a terrible location. There's talk of building a new station in a more convenient location, but it'll cost millions.

Yeah, it will make a big difference if they do build a new one. It feels such a long bleak walk through the old terminal. The old station feels pretty unloved and haunted now too.

I remembered the mystery meat rolls I got in the bakers while I was there too 😅

Agnew park looked nice though and the miniature railway was quite charming

@PrettyLittleRose I’d rather spend a week in Guantanamo Bay than Blackpool !

That’s fascinating ! There’s a young woman who makes YT films she lives in Yatuskt (?) in Siberia it’s amazing to watch the layers of clothing they have wear and that the camera only works for three minutes and have to keep a back up in a heated bag , she said a sad little tale that she was waiting for the school bus as a child and her tears froze 😢 they have heated bus shelters now ! I find it so interesting, you must have seen a few sights and had some unique experiences

Is that the lass who lives with her partner in a more or less deserted village and spends most of her time cooking?

I've seen her vids, and yes, they are emotionally touching in a sort of simple, peaceful way that makes me think that sort of lifestyle wouldn't be at all bad.

you must have seen a few sights and had some unique experiences

A LOT of poverty and privation. Romania the worst of all. Children thieving from sheer hunger the worst of it.

Weston-super-mare - just awful.

i actually really like Luton - I totally understand why people have a bad impression but I felt welcomed. I’ve only been a couple of times and each time I dread it and then leave pleasantly surprised.

Agree - I had a job interview once in Luton and was pleasantly surprised. Friendly atmosphere. I was only there an hour or so though and had low expectations.

I also like Portsmouth, Whitby and Belfast mentioned by PP.

Agree on Slough though, can't think of a redeeming feature off the top of my head.

You won't be disappointed.

I grew up in Hagley and have many fond memories of nights out in Birmingham. I went last month with work and we very quickly abandoned the idea of a night out while we were there. It's a dump and actually a bit scary now. Why is all the area around BNS so awful?!

I found Holy Island very unnerving. I know that's kind of the point though. We paddled by St Cuthberts Island and the water was beautiful but it just felt so "off". There were quite a few people but everyone seemed oblivious to everyone else. Not in a selfish or inconsiderate type way, more in a they dont see them type way. Very odd. Plus everywhere stopped serving food at o'clock or sonething.

SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 23:42

@BiteSizeByzantine ’Turd Towns’ is a funny title though 🤣

Barrow. Hands down.

Oooh yeah. I used to have to travel there for work. Scenic journey, awful place

SilenceInside · Yesterday 23:43

@In2mindsss maybe it’s the huge contrast between the front, with the attractions where money has clearly been spent on some of those, compared to the obvious deprivation anywhere immediately off the seafront. It comes as a big surprise if you aren’t aware of it.

Sorry it’s Blackpool again 🤦‍♀️Went there a day trip with son who was at Lancaster Uni. We lasted an hour…what a shit tip .

summeronthehorizon · Yesterday 23:43

Those of you saying Oban and Illfracombe clearly lead sheltered lives sorry. They may not be phenomenal, and have suffered due to a decline in tourism but they are no way in the same league as some other places listed here.

Wick mentioned a lot, can't disagree even though it's my home! For me lowestoft and peterborough are serious contenders.

About ten years ago, I had to go to Peterborough to work a night shift at a supplier's premises about 20 minutes walk from the station. I was offered a taxi, but my train got there quite early, so I walked. It seemed a bit grotty, but I didn't think much of it.

When I arrived, the staff there were horrified I'd walked, and acted like I'd genuinely risked my life.

I'm male, by the way.

Bournemouth. I went in the middle of summer. The centre was rammed full of crowds of people and the atmosphere felt intimidating - like it was just on the cusp of everything kicking off.

For me, Blackpool is just sad - the levels of deprivation are just so visible and it feels like a town well past it's prime. But Bournemouth felt edgy in all the wrong ways to me.

I know exactly what you mean.
