Bournemouth recently.

Had such happy memories there ten years ago but the town has changed dramatically- and not for the better. I felt unsafe walking there in the evening. Loads of strange people loitering about. The recent rapes we’re playing on my mind. I won’t be back.

Dungeness. Famous for being the UK's only officially classified desert, it features a stark shingle landscape dotted with abandoned fishing boats, distinctive wooden houses, two lighthouses, and the imposing Dungeness nuclear power stations. I felt really depressed when I went there.

Oh no that's not what I felt when I visited it. Bleak, yes but that's it's USP. Fascinating place. Felt like I was at the end of the world.

I can't stand overly twee towns and Tavistock gave me the creeps as did Glastonbury.

Is that the lass who lives with her partner in a more or less deserted village and spends most of her time cooking?

I've seen her vids, and yes, they are emotionally touching in a sort of simple, peaceful way that makes me think that sort of lifestyle wouldn't be at all bad.

you must have seen a few sights and had some unique experiences

A LOT of poverty and privation. Romania the worst of all. Children thieving from sheer hunger the worst of it.

Edited

No, she lives in the city in a nice high rise and has a baby she’s so nice, she walks round the city with her camera man, and showed the bad part of the city where the houses are collapsing because the permafrost is melting (slowly) and she visited a coffe cabin and did the throw the coffee in the air thing. Will see if I can find her

I'll add Stonehenge - it felt utterly malevolent to me. I could not wait to leave 🤷‍♀️

Jesus Blackpool is getting a rough ride. Might have to visit, ive never been

I have to agree. I hadn't visited since a couple of childhood holidays staying in St Anne's. DH & I attended a Blackpool wedding a few years ago. I was really disappointed in how run down it looked compared to my childhood memories

Stoke
Norfolk
Blackpool
Derby

The whole of Norfolk?!?

Love Norfolk for the most part, except Hunstanton.

Stevenage deserves a mention too

I visited redcar recently. It was grim.

Blackpool - my grandparents lived there in the 80s. It was grim then I assume no better now.

But great Yarmouth - we had a great time at the hippodrome. My kids still say not sure about great but exceeding expectations Yarmouth!

Slough. Been through or to it many times and it has a reputation for a reason.

One of my first boyfriends was an Italian who had no idea how to pronounce Slough and referred to it as "Sluff". That was 30 years ago and it's still the only way I can say it. 😂

Ponders End
Waltham Coss
Margate
Luton

Ponders End - always sounded like the place a deep-thinker would have their epiphany. Sadly not. The whole strip along Mollison Avenue is grim.

For me - Waterlooville. Sounds so lovely! Had to take my son to a scout event and was looking forward to strolling around the town, was very disappointed. Havant is possibly worse but I didn’t have the same expectation.

Thetford is weird.

Blackburn circa 1993. Closely followed by Slough - come friendly bombs indeed!

and Woolwich

I’ve seen Lowestoft been mentioned a few times. I live here, it is a very deprived sea side town, what part did everyone go to? Sparrows nest is a nice area, so is Oulton broad, we have a lovely beach too, town area is a shit hole I agree but this town is very safe and there’s a lot worse places out there

It has the exact opposite effect on me, I'm completely in awe of how and why it was built. It's truly one of the greatest things in the world.

Brighton
Possibly because I have had to go there far more often than I would ever choose (a good friend lives there). I feel resentful at the amount of time I've had to walk from the station past the horrible pubs and cafes to its stony beach and grey sea and burnt out pier. Plus all the aggressive try hard alternative crunchiness. I've been to other parts of Sussex and am always stunned at how lovely they are and that they exist in the same county as godawful Brighton.

My nephew's girlfriend who is about 20 went to visit her sister there and I asked her what she thought and she said "it's OK but I never want to go to a unisex toilet again in my life."

Why is blackpool any worse than any other of the derelict seaside towns we have on these fair islands?
I mean we are awash with these kinds of places, I would have thought that at least Blackpool has some kind of personality or vibe that the ghost towns dont. Am surprised to see so many voices against it!

It's dirty and angry and feels cheap and nasty. It's like it's just there to take advantage of you. If it was a person Blackpool would be Fagan.

JLou08 · Yesterday 23:52

I went to Morecambe a few weeks ago and I really liked it. It was only a few hours in the sea front so I didn't get the full experience.
I think it's Ingoldmells for me. Lots of drunk adults on the beach with kids in tow. It felt like a fight could break out at any minute.
Birmingham was also a pretty scary place at night. Gangs of men hanging about looking very serious.

KittyEckersley · Yesterday 23:53

Chaddesdon
Mersey Island
Takely

NameChangeScot · Yesterday 23:53

Greenock. I was genuinely worried to park my car, absolute shit hole.

Closely followed by Stranraer, souless and strange place.

TimmyTheEunuch · Yesterday 23:54

Bradford - it’s just shit (I’m from there)
but I’ll add:-
Cwmbran - just demolish the place and start again
Stoke on Trent - dismal
Derby - underwhelming
Paington - depressing

Very run down but lots of good things on like Firstlight Festival this weekend

Bognor Regis. There's definitely worse places, but I've had some grim experiences there.

Bloozie · Yesterday 23:55

Hate to jump on the bandwagon but definitely Blackpool. Stag and hens mean people throwing up in the street at 10am, I've never seen so many spitting, broken glass and urine in all gutters, the sea is chocolate brown, the hotel had bedbugs, the shops sell golliwogs...

This has surprised me too. There are other places by the sea on the Essex and Kent coast and on the south coast that are run down now. Jaywick anyone? Brighton is getting a bit rough. Also Bournemouth... And Portsmouth.

There's a certain snobbery about the North though, and it's very fashionable to bash it...
