Fraserburgh or Wick, with Middlesbrough in 3rd place.

I've been to Norilsk (look it up), and that wasn't as grim and foreboding as either Fraserburgh or Wick. Driving through Middlesbrough is like a combo of being on Safari and driving through a 3rd World warzone.

I was born in Wick and went back there about three years ago. It was the first time I had been back for about 40 years and it had changed so much. Not for the better.

Used to love going to Wick for the day from our village but the soul had totally gone out of it and it was so run down in the centre.

Grimsby.

I had to go there half a dozen times for work. It got worse each time. The hotel i stayed in (twice) was like a mad fever dream - the first time they had a buffet breakfast that was mostly tinned fruit in syrup. I had to do a survey and ask people in the high street to answer questions. Half of them couldn't understand my accent, i couldn't understand the other half.

Second time the hotel lobby and hallways of the hotel were littered with passed out drunk people with a brawl outside. I got the impression it was normal.

I have never been in a more depressing place in my life.

Great Yarmouth. Apparently it used to be a nice seaside town but I went there two years ago and it is a sad, unnerving dump. Saying that, I found a sweet little cafe run by a family from somewhere in Europe (not sure whether they were from Romania or Bulgaria), and a decent chip shop. I'd booked a night in a B&B so I stayed, but the next day I couldn't get out of there fast enough 😱

I was just coming on to say Great Yarmouth. A 'sad, unnerving dump' hits the nail squarely on the head. I went there fairly recently - not for fun, I might add. I wasn't expecting much, I expected it to be a bit tacky in the way that certain English seaside towns can be, but I was absolutely gobsmacked at how fucking awful it was. It's one of those places that has filthy mattresses and old fridges dumped on the street and nobody bats an eyelid.

I got attacked by birds the last time I was in Wick. I did get a quite nice bowl of mushroom soup though so I guess it’s got that going for it

Weston-super-mare - just awful.

i actually really like Luton - I totally understand why people have a bad impression but I felt welcomed. I’ve only been a couple of times and each time I dread it and then leave pleasantly surprised.

Hayes in west London and Arthur's Hill in west Newcastle are the most littered places I have ever been to. Utterly depressing.

In the last few years I’ve found York and Chester centres very disappointing. Don’t get the appeal.

What did you not like? I love both, but I am a history geek and the Roman stuff is great - Chester is really beautiful to walk around, York's shopping area is like any town but the history in surrounding areas is amazing.

For me Rhyl. I drove through the other day and it's just really sad now, it was Blackpool's poor relation in the 60/70s but it's a ghost town now.

Barrow-in-Furness. I was there with a friend a few years ago, we spent the night at the Travelodge on the outskirts of town. After we checked in, we were planning on going to find an Indian restaurant for dinner, but we were a bit knackered. I was pleased to see a Dominos in the car park, so I went to get some pizza we could eat in our room instead.

It took ages to get served, because two of the Dominos staff were out in the car park beating the shit out of each other, while the other staff cheered them on.

Twickenham station and nearby was cold and unsafe. I have not been back for a long time. It may have changed.

Arbroath has the sadness of poverty but some excellent small or independent shops and bakeries, fantastic historical sites, and good walks. Stay in a normal/popular hotel, though, unless you are ghostproof.

I know this isn't in the same league as shit run down cities, but... Scafell Pike. We went in from Wasdale Head and I just got such a terrible sense of foreboding, I put up with it for about an hour then I had to leave. It just felt... malevolent? I've never felt like that outside of nightmares before. As soon as we got on the road again I started to feel better.

Wasdale and Scafell are very imposing and daunting - in shadow on the scree side. It’s such a beautiful area though and I’m always awestruck at the power of nature there.

Rhyl. Dire hovel. They have tried to improve it but there is just nothing there.

When we used to go when the kids were little, there was a decent fair with roller coasters, a big sun centre, a big exotic butterfly centre, about 10 arcades, donkey rides, a sea life centre, and multiple dozens of shops. Also a lovely, long, wide, spacious seafront.

Now the seafront has been built up with an ugly ass concrete barrier that's about 12 feet high, (because of previous flooding from the sea in that area,) so you can't see the sea at all in Rhyl unless you walk for ages to get around the bloody huge barriers.

Most of the shops have closed - or are closing - and all the nice quirky/unusual shops have gone. Very few places to go or things to do. Maybe one arcade, and a couple of cafe and restaurants, You'd struggle to entertain yourself for more than 2 hours there.

Agree that Blackpool is a shithole, but it's a better place to go than Rhyl because there's so much to do there, and 100s of shops... Also 3 piers, a huge fair, theatres, lots of arcades and pubs and clubs and eateries, and attractions like The Waxworks and The Sea Life Centre and The Tower. And a big beach of course. You could easily spend a week there. Need plenty of money for it all though!

Long Eaton

Agreed. It’s horrible

SaferHaven · Yesterday 23:34

Blackpool

Greigesofa · Yesterday 23:34

just the run down places without jobs, public transport or amenities which are everywhere, and anywhere with antisocial behaviour on the streets like anywhere where the electric scooter or bike riders obscure their faces. Again that’s happening in a lot of places.

WinterFaye2 · Yesterday 23:34

I agree with Blackpool.

if we are just talking about places in general Moston is pretty dire. I drove through Broughton (Salford) today and someone ran out into the road off their face on something.

Used to love going to Wick for the day from our village but the soul had totally gone out of it and it was so run down in the centre.

I went up there for a long weekend to visit the family of a friend. We were young and skint, and the weather wasn't particularly enticing either. The whole place just reeked of desperation and indifference. The highlight of the entire trip was a car run out to Dounreay. Not a tour or anything, just sitting in the car looking at the power station from the main gate. We drove back to Wick, went into the house, stuck the telly on, and didn't move again for about 48 hours.

Oh, we also went to John O'Groats, which was just yet more standing there freezing thinking "christ this is grim", then we went home.

Derby is quite close to me and it used to be ok. Went there recently after a gap of many years and I was shocked at how run down it had become. So many places are like that now sadly

Derby is a shithole, with some very weird people with attitudes. My school was in Derby. It was awful even 40 years ago the boys had knives down their Docs. Several kids got arrested and sent down for rape. It’s never been good.

Dover. Amazing castle. Beautiful train ride in. Town centre tired and somehow sad.

The weird period in the early-mid 90s, pre Putin, pre massive criminal cartels, where Russia genuinely was accessible and you could do pretty much anything. I took the train across most of central Europe and the former Eastern Bloc, and thought screw it, why not continue all across Siberia.

That’s fascinating ! There’s a young woman who makes YT films she lives in Yatuskt (?) in Siberia it’s amazing to watch the layers of clothing they have wear and that the camera only works for three minutes and have to keep a back up in a heated bag , she said a sad little tale that she was waiting for the school bus as a child and her tears froze 😢 they have heated bus shelters now ! I find it so interesting, you must have seen a few sights and had some unique experiences

Also Bedgelart in Wales felt like I had to get out of there
