Hastings. Absolutely dilapidated dive. I’m not going to say where I grew up but it features on a PP. My hometown is boring but not dilapidated.

Yes! Forgot Peterborough!

The cathedral is definitely worth a visit but otherwise it's rather a depressing place.

I’ve never minded Peterborough weirdly. Maybe I’ve only been to the best bits.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · Today 14:17

Oh god I’ve forgotten Luton. Terrible place and I think it’s pretty high on the worst places to live charts.

Violinist64 · Today 14:17

l didn’t like Carlisle, either. It didn’t help that the weather was appalling - not unusual for Cumbria, l know but this meant that everywhere was very dark and brooding and the whole place felt very oppressive. My father was a Cumbrian and I love the rest of the county, just not Carlisle and I don’t think he was much of a fan, either.

Kinlochleven. I've never been creeped out by anywhere before and this place just had bad vibes.

Yes, it gave me bad vibes too.

Oldham
Got stuck in roadworks, couldn’t get out, Sat nav couldn’t get me out, then got a flat tyre. It was an Eid and there were people everywhere, all dancing joyously in the road. They offered us food whilst we were waiting for the AA! So maybe not that bad. I’m sure Oldham is lovely if you know where you’re going.

Portmerion in wales, just had a horrible sense of foreboding behind the creepy colourful empty facades of the building. No idea what draws people back for return visits, it creeped the hell out of me.

I adore Portmerion and am one of the frequent returners you mention.
The colourful buildings certainly aren't empty - they are all holiday lets, and we've had some wonderful breaks there. The woodland gardens and long sandy beaches surrounding the buildings are magnificent.
Wouldn't want to stay there in high season though as it can get very crowded during opening times.

So basically, don't go anywhere in the f*ing UK then😂

Some town in Norfolk that was stuck in a bygone era, and not in a good way. All the businesses belonged to someone called Roy, and looked very outdated, so it was ‘Toymaster by Roy’ etc. on most of the signs on the high street. Truly bizarre. The ambience wasn’t helped by being hosted by DP’s arsehole friend who promoted it to us it as ‘a really fancy day out’. Maybe that clouded my opinion a bit.

Continuing this theme, Tadcaster in Yorkshire. Looks like a pretty town with a river and a high street full of independents but had lots of boarded up shops. Many of the pubs looked like they should have been condemned years ago. We had been at a wedding nearby in the most beautiful old house so thought we’d make a weekend of it.

Is Saltaire technically in Bradford? Gorgeous place.

Wroxham. It’s the gateway to the Broads, though.

I was bought up in Stratford. Apparently, according to GransNet it’s now gentrified! It’s a dreadful place and on visits back I can’t wait to leave. I don’t find it intimidating but it’s a sad place where failure is written in people’s eyes. Strange thing is just down the road in Forest Gate, the school there a couple of years ago had the most number of students going on to uni, or maybe Oxbridge, or some such accolade.

Not my experience of Stratford at all, been living not far from it for over 15 years and been going to the park, Aquatic Centre, football ground and the shopping centre with my DC almost every week when he was little. The area further away from the Olympic bits is a bit grim, but not that bad. Obviously a poorer area - but still has some nice houses and pockets of charm.

@Excellentsausages Bexhill is much better than Hastings

Brighton is a weird place, can be good can be bad, just depends

Blaenau Ffestiniog

Fort William needs to get rid of the 60s/70s shops. Campbeltown was a bit depressing

Oban - love Oban.

Never liked Birmingham around 18:00 when the birds came back into the city, really weird atmosphere.

Bideford - everything shuts at 15:00, just a weird place

@user293948849167 Bath is worth a visit if only for the Baths and the Abbey. Use the park and ride, it's quite cheap.

I'm intruiged, what do you mean when the birds come back Into the city at 18.00? I'm a brummie and can't think what you mean 🤣 only birds I can think of are the pigeons in Colmore row!!

A long while ago, I used to have a book called ‘Crap Towns as voted for by their inhabitants’. Luton was top followed by Windsor in second place. I think the hatred of Windsor was due to everyone thinking that royalty rubbed off.

I love Dungeness. It’s a bit other worldly and has an end of the world feel, especially in winter. There are a couple of famous writers that live there and some unique coastal flora.

I like Dungeness, it is peaceful, low crime, you can buy fresh fish and get really good fish and chips.
However, sticking to Kent, some of the worst places - Dartford, Chatham (centre), Gillingham (centre), Sheerness, Leysdown. On to other parts of the country - Luton, Blackpool, Penzance.

MinnieMountain · Today 14:23

Peterborough's not that bad to live in. Sadly the city centre (apart from the cathedral and precincts) gives a poor first impression.

I think most town centres are pretty grim these days, so that's not unique to Peterborough.

I would like to know what people who post their "worst" places think the "best" places are. I have been to Salcombe, for example, its pretty but I also found it unpleasant because of the type of people and the overall upper middle class vibe. I would never say its bad but its not my kind of place at all. I love London, I love Northern cities in general - love the grittiness and the "real" vibe. Cutesy flowery village Cornwall type thing is not for me at all.

OhamIreally · Today 14:25

Newham

StrictlyCoffee · Today 14:25

Weston super Mare

Used to go as a child and a few years ago holidaying in the region I wanted to go back. What a craphole. Banksy got it right with “Dismaland”.

Swindon is shite as well

I know Pilning, near Severn ‘beach’
what’s your thing with pilning ??

Have you been there recently??

It’s surrounded by motorways. Constant background hum of lorries rumbling past. Nowhere nice to walk to (without having to cross 2 motorways). Now they are building huge warehouses on the nearby industrial land that dominate the skyline.

It makes me feel so depressed every time I visit!

Hull has amazing museums.

And parks. It has a fascinating history.
Loads of films have been made here and it features in a lot of tv programmes eg Enola Holmes.

I agree, it gets a bad rap but I found it to be a really practical place to live, with the added bonus of some beautiful things like the cathedral and ferry meadows.

😆 this made me LOL

I will say an an addendum to my previous post about Birmingham, yes it is scary and bleak but at least the city centre still has some things going for it...Great restaurants etc

Stoke on trent on the other hand. Grim.

PMA1981 · Today 14:38

Other than the nice parts of the Olympic Park most of Newham is awful.

A prevailing feeling of menace on the air and extremely divided communities. There is a lot of social tension and distrust.
Drugs are rife and the amount of street crime (that is mostly not reported) is increasing rapidly. Look at people the wrong way and you’ll regret it. Same for parts of Tower Hamlets and Harringay.

there are so many tinderbox areas of London you would not wish to find yourself after dark. I know this because I travel all over the capital for work and see this constant state of venom ready to strike daily.

Stowickthevast · Today 14:39

@BountifulPantry Euston station is awful. But just around the corner you can get a great curry in Drummond street. Cross Euston Road and you're in Bloomsbury, walk west and you'll hit Regents Park, North to Camden and east to Kings Cross and Islington.

Weird people saying Shropshire. It's some of the loveliest countryside in England.
