I’ve not seen a mention for Grimsby yet . Clearly so shit no one from outside comes anymore.

Was on a coach trip with my mother a few years ago. Final stop was the Birmingham Christmas Market. We were allowed 2 hours. Went to John Lewis and stayed there until it was time to get back in the coach. Filthy , dirty, intimidating place.

John Lewis has gone now you’d be buggered
There’s a cake shop opposite the bull ring

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 21/06/2026 09:03

Not the worst place but I couldn’t be doing with Milton Keynes. Just endless long dead straight roads & the infamous concrete cows.

And the rats, litter and fly tipping.

PaperTyger · 21/06/2026 09:20

Hartlepool , probably better now but as a child I couldn't believe the deprivation around me
People living in half demolished buildings.

Agree with around Northumberland felt very bleak and lonely.
Some Welsh sea side towns as soon as I see slot machines my heat sinks !

Whitstable
Never had a bad holiday until this place it's industrial ,not pretty no nice views from the beach ,cafes opened and closed at odd times and any times we managed to coordinate with an opening the service was beyond the pale
The air b nb was dark and forboding and all just terrible. Couldn't wait to leave

Melancholyflower · 21/06/2026 00:16

Anyone secretly pleased that where they live hasn't come up (yet)? Though I'm surprised nobody has said London yet , as if all of it could be awful.

I'm waiting for it. It always comes up on these threads. Then funnily, lots of people who do/have lived here jump on to defend it. TBF it is a very misunderstood place and has an unfair reputation. Although, like a lot of places the town centre is slowly being boarded up one shop at a time and you can't walk anywhere in town without dealing with druggies. Sadly a lot of places are the same.

midwalker · 21/06/2026 09:20

Gloucester town centre is awful. I thought MN must be exaggerating about it until I loved to Gloucestershire. Even DH commented that it was one of the worst he’d ever seen- and he’s from near Grimsby.

PaperTyger · 21/06/2026 09:21

@Melancholyflower not really , someone could definitely mention my town and id half agree more than half agree but my home and our corner are just about ok!

OnlyGarden · 21/06/2026 09:22

CustardySergeant · 21/06/2026 01:12

Do you mean Fagin?

Yes! No excuse. 🤣

kerstina · 21/06/2026 09:13

There are two Newports in Wales . I presume you mean the bigger one as the other one is idyllic.

The Golden Lion, is it, in little Newport? I got very pissed there. Very.

Coffeeonloop · 21/06/2026 09:22

TheBluntSeal · 21/06/2026 08:23

Manchester - but specifically the canal that runs through it (we were on a narrowboat and canals do pass by some run down parts of towns/cities)

One end is a huge pub which looked like a lovely place to sit and have a drink, thought 'oh this looks lovely' as we used the lock. Got to the other end and the last lock which is now under buildings and encased in concrete, plastered with 'No soliciting' signs. There were clearly a few people ignoring those signs. DD1 was told to keep the boat away from the tow path and in clear water and to try not to get into conversations, as DH and I worked the lock as fast as we could.

Portland Bill lighthouse. This is more Woo, gave me the creeps as we drove down to it and the whole week we stayed there.

It's all very subjective. I like a lot of the places mentioned here but can see why others wouldn't.

"no soliciting" doesn't mean prostitution, it means selling stuff, door to door.

Stratford, East London. Awful place, and every time i have the misfortune to go there something bad happens. Has a violent undercurrent.

Undercurrent? It's overt!

Coffeeonloop · 21/06/2026 09:23

Watford.
Weston super mare

HoppityBun · 21/06/2026 09:24

Southampton is awful and I couldn’t see the point of it, except as a place to leave the UK from. Very expensive houses but not much going for it, in my view.

In fact, I regard the whole of the south coast as one long, ghastly conurbation that is haunted by memories of times when there were pleasant, distinct little towns along the way.

I have a soft spot for Hastings, but I know many people regarded as dire.

Chichester is ok, I suppose, but still not really a distinct town anymore.

It appears that pronounce every town in the UK is a bit shit.

’pretty much’ not ‘pronounce’

🙂

easterb · 21/06/2026 09:25

Kings Lynn - safe enough, but just very depressing. Charity shops, pound shops, unemployment and mobility scooters are my main memories. Best thing about it is the train station to get out of there.

Kent Coast - took a trip there recently - Whitstable was quite nice - but elsewhere there seemed to be many groups of drunk teenage boys with their shirts off getting into fights, shouting and vomiting. Broadstairs had a similar vibe. Not been to Margate but imagine it’s similar. Wouldn’t return.

Kilburn in London - absolutely grim - in particular Kilburn High Rd is and will always be terrible. Lots of nitties, mentally unwell people, homeless people aggressively begging, and people who look like they will rob you. Also ugly, hectic and polluted.

I didn’t get a good vibe from Bristol I must say but that was a gut feeling really as I was only there for a few hours.

AngelinaFibres · 21/06/2026 09:26

PrettyLittleRose · 20/06/2026 23:55

This has surprised me too. There are other places by the sea on the Essex and Kent coast and on the south coast that are run down now. Jaywick anyone? Brighton is getting a bit rough. Also Bournemouth... And Portsmouth.

There's a certain snobbery about the North though, and it's very fashionable to bash it...

Its not fashionable to bash the north it's just true. Most of it is an absolute shit hole. My husband's family live in various towns around Manchester. They're all dumps . They took us to the Lowry in Salford and then into Manchester. So many people taking that spice stuff. Horrible.

Ah, I wasn’t aware there are two in Wales (I know there’s one in England). I’m referring to the city half an hour from Cardiff.

Passwordsaremynemesis · 21/06/2026 08:40

What? Brighton beach is terrible!

Beachfront, I like the restaurants, cafes etc.

Contrarymary30 · 21/06/2026 09:27

Blackpool for a cheap caravan holiday . Took a while to get over how awful it was ,the place and the caravan .

OnlyGarden · 21/06/2026 09:31

AgnesMcDoo · 21/06/2026 00:47

Stirling? Really? Castle, Wallace Monument, Historic Old Town, River, and the backdrop of the Ochil Hills.

When we went to Stirling, it was closed. Like all of it. 🤣
Plus a geocache ended up causing a big row and tears.

Why is blackpool any worse than any other of the derelict seaside towns we have on these fair islands?
I mean we are awash with these kinds of places, I would have thought that at least Blackpool has some kind of personality or vibe that the ghost towns dont. Am surprised to see so many voices against it!

Personally I agree with the pp who said it's better than Rhyl. Rhyl is just a shell, which is a shame as the stretch of beach is great.

My possibly controversial view on Blackpool is that it can work well IF you do your planning, want a place where there's a concentration of things to do in a small area, and you're interested in doing a critical mass of those things. Or just a day trip to one or two of them if you're not far.

Which is not to deny that some of it is grim. If you're going into the town centre itself, you are going to see visible social problems so I wouldn't recommend it if that's going to outweigh any enjoyment you might get from say the rides. Whereas the zoo/Stanley Park/nature reserve area is more affluent so it's not really visible there.

I've never stayed over in the town, and have no intention of doing. There's some lovely countryside round there an easy enough drive into the town itself if you want to do stuff there, which is my personal preference.

HoppityBun · 21/06/2026 09:11

There are loads of places mentioned that aren’t in the north of England. Not least, Haverfordwest and Lowestoft. Though I disagree that they are awful places, H’west is far away to the west and Lowestoft is literally as far east as you can go.

Add in Glastonbury, Tunbridge Wells, Croydon, Portsmouth, Bedford, Bournemouth, Luton, Falmouth and of course London and you’re nowhere near correct. Not just London, but specifically parts of London. I don’t know if you count Northampton as The North? I don’t but some do. Most are mentioned several times and these are just the ones I can remember.

I agree that northerners by default seem to be resentful about everywhere else and think that Londoners look down on them when the reality is that Londoners don’t even think about them at all. If you can generalise, then so will I.

its just an awful thread yes you are correct, other places have been mentioned but on the whole it’s the north west that comes out worse. It’s not nice to be so unkind to others, we all know some places are nicer than others but SOME comments are so brutal and I just find it nasty! Let’s all laugh at the poor people living in poverty!

Bognor Regis. There's definitely worse places, but I've had some grim experiences there.

We went to Butlins at Bognor when the DC were little .
There was a public toilet near a supermarket that looked like the toilet out of Trainspotting was for a horror film .
DD has never gone for a pee as quick "No don't wash your hands I have wipes" and out of there !

Vinvertebrate · 21/06/2026 09:34

Birkenhead - full of crackheads and dicey as fuck, even in the shopping centre in daylight.

Parked the car in Cheetham Hill in Manchester recently and was genuinely surprised that it was still there when we returned. Absolute shithole, so much litter just dumped on the street.

A friend of mine used to be a social worker in the SE but recently moved to the NW, and said she saw more deprivation in her first few months than in her entire previous career in the SE. You can definitely tell that Westminster politicians’ interest wanes at about Watford…

SquitMcJit · 21/06/2026 08:39

Saltburn on Sea - not the charming seaside town it was advertised to be. Grim and derelict, Sainsbury’s had been ram-raided.

Wisbech - unnerving

Really? I went to Saltburn on Sea for the first time recently on a lovely sunny day, and it really was a charming seaside town. We walked along the beach and pier, through some woodlands, and back past some posh houses and the edge of town.

Maybe there's another part that we didn't see?
