Bradford

I live in Bradford, and whole heartedly agree with you. City of Culture, my arse.

Yep and Jingles in Southall, which was fab!

Oh yes!! At the Seagull pub I think? There were quite a few nightclubs around the West London 'burbs, actually most districts thinking about it. Perhaps we should start a thread about nightclubs of our youth?

LittleGee69 · 21/06/2026 09:35

Aston (Birmingham). Was there for work. Rubbish everywhere. Mattresses and sofas in front gardens, overflowing bins.

ChapmanFarm · 21/06/2026 09:35

In2mindsss · 20/06/2026 23:19

Seriously!!! Ive been meaning to gi there, its supposed to have beautiful cliffs and cave swimming. What's wrong with it?

It does. It has a few run down bits but the harbour is lovely, sea cliff walk great, keptie ponds.

It's not got the kind of town centre you'd go to as a destination but that's not really where the appeal lies. Like many small towns in Scotland good and bad are in very close proximity.

If you want that go a bit further south to broughty ferry.

Its not fashionable to bash the north it's just true. Most of it is an absolute shit hole. My husband's family live in various towns around Manchester. They're all dumps . They took us to the Lowry in Salford and then into Manchester. So many people taking that spice stuff. Horrible.

But apart from the obvious beautiful areas in the South, such as Devon, Cornwall, villages in Somerset, the South has pretty shitty areas too. London, I’m looking at you. In the North, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, and Northumberland, are absolutely beautiful places.

Hull has amazing museums.

It does. I visited recently and was genuinely impressed. I have a soft spot for a dull museum, but these were actually really good. Lovely art gallery too.

Tiddlywinks63 · 21/06/2026 09:40

Bath, it’s a miserable shadow of its former self, full of closed shops and street sleepers in doorways. A smell of urine pervades streets off the main thoroughfare. Parking charges are extortionate.
If it didn’t have the tourist attractions to entice foreign visitors it would be dead.

HoppityBun · 21/06/2026 09:42

Favouritefruits · 21/06/2026 09:32

its just an awful thread yes you are correct, other places have been mentioned but on the whole it’s the north west that comes out worse. It’s not nice to be so unkind to others, we all know some places are nicer than others but SOME comments are so brutal and I just find it nasty! Let’s all laugh at the poor people living in poverty!

No one is laughing at poor people.

And I think you’re factually plain wrong in saying that the NW is singled out.

Spidey66 · 21/06/2026 09:42

As soon as I saw this thread title I thought Blackpool, and I'm clearly not alone.

In it's defence my sister lives nearby in Lytham St Anne's and that's nice.

I will also add Edmonton Green. I lived there for 3 years in the early 90s and it was grim then, and i imagine it's worse now. I only stuck it for 3 years because we were in a council flat and saving to buy.

darksideofthetoon · 21/06/2026 09:44

Blackpool!

Decided to stop there for 1 night with the kids on the way down from Scotland to The Cotswolds.

I hadn’t been since a kid but nothing prepared me for the hell on Earth that was Blackpool. Everything about it left me feeling cold and like something was trying to steal my soul. Even the best restaurant in town was comically bad. The place reeked of rancid oil and most people looked like they wouldn’t see their 50th birthday.

Terribly sad to see and I hope it can be regenerated but it’s some task.

Timeslips don't exist but I do acknowledge that people might feel odd/uneasy/unhappy because of the underground and the way the electric currents, sounds and vibrations run around Bond Street.

Before the sat nav was invented, the Andover roundabout system. I got stuck going round and round and definitely panicked that I would never escape!

I had that experience with the Basingstoke roundabout system. Perhaps it’s a Hampshire thing?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/06/2026 09:45

Bolton

Dorothyperky · 21/06/2026 09:46

Swindon

Used to be a rural small town. A bit worzle ish.
The town centre is unsafe for women now and all the shops have gone (three department stores, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's).
Now full of vape shops , barbers and fried food.

MummySleepDeprived · 21/06/2026 09:46

GoldThumb · 20/06/2026 22:59

Not sure where the town was, but we’re driving from Essex to Stanstead airport, and went through/past a small village, and never felt anything like it before. Just felt really oppressive. Then it had these little dummies everywhere, dressed up as random police officer/kid in a football kit. Presumably for traffic to slow down, but just felt so creepy, was getting total wicker man vibes

We have a few of those near schools and I get Children of the Corn vibes from them. They get even creepier when the paint chips from their faces.

Drove through Jaywick once. Felt like we were in a seaside version of Deliverance. Nasty 😬

This made me laugh, thanks

Gloucester town centre is awful. I thought MN must be exaggerating about it until I loved to Gloucestershire. Even DH commented that it was one of the worst he’d ever seen- and he’s from near Grimsby.

Bu t 'near Grimsby' there are some lovely places, in the same way near my very industrial NW hometown there are some beautiful places A friend who came to teach in the area and subsequently moved to the South Downs area used to say how he missed the ruggedness of the NW area and easy access to some of the county's finest countryside.

My home town always makes the first page of these threads 😂
I haven’t read the rest by my mother’s wisdom led us leaving bootle to the desirable area of Birkenhead where I spent my teens. I’m going to see how long that takes to be mentioned and then ask for a trophy!

Both places have been mentioned a few times.

Happyjoe · 21/06/2026 09:49

Blackpool. Drove all the way from Brighton with my friends for a girls weekend and the drive was the best part, even with being stuck in traffic. That's one very run down place.

localnotail · 21/06/2026 09:50

I have been to many of UK towns and cities, some do have deprived bits - but I found not one of them completely dreadful. All have some nicer parts, even the poor grim places, and all have their unique charm.

I think a lot of the experiences on this thread are one off and a lot have some sort of personal grudges (there is always one saying "London", lol).

I do dislike Brighton, for example, but I dont think its dreadful.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 21/06/2026 09:51

Certain parts of Birmingham and Great Yarmouth.

Bolton

I wouldn't say it's the worst but for reasons well known locally it has been allowed to go to rack and ruin, so sad for a once proud town.
