Sheffield? Really? It’s surrounded by the most beautiful Peak District and the city centre is lovely too.

justasking111 · 21/06/2026 08:59

Used to go to Rhyl quite often 40 years ago. The shops and area was very run down then. We lived quite nearby so took the children swimming there.

Bradford is sad to see I'm told by a friend who grew up there.

Blackpool has never appealed to me.

Maybe London was always dirty. As a child I thought it wonderful. My grandchildren country mice really don't like it.

The whole of Norfolk?!?

Love Norfolk for the most part, except Hunstanton.

Stevenage deserves a mention too

We went on holiday to north Norfolk last year and it was in the main, delightful. Even Hunstanton was ok.

I don't disagree with your sentiment but there are plenty of non Northern places mentioned.

Norfolk is getting it in the neck too

I agree on Sheffield, lots of it is really nice

admittedly it has some dodgy bits (doesn’t every city?) but they are very easily avoided

Parts of Devon and Cornwall - I don't like how the trees and vegetation seems to 'crowd' some of the roads - it feels really claustrophobic.

There’s a reason for that in Cornwall. The council are shite.

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 21/06/2026 09:03

There’s a few.

Blackpool- went there early autumn when it was unseasonably warm and during the day it was ok along the sea front. As soon as the sun started to go down the atmosphere changed like a switch had been flipped and it felt like there was this weird feeling of aggression in the air? if that makes sense? Only been once or twice wouldn’t hurry back.

Watford is a really unfriendly place. Very jarring to go from somewhere like Liverpool (but not only Liverpool) where people are generally friendlier, will hold doors open for you to get your buggy through, tell you to have a nice day etc to somewhere where people actively scowl at you for no reason. It was a bit like Blackpool but the aggression was as more passive…

liamharha · 21/06/2026 09:03

Burnley

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 21/06/2026 09:03

Not the worst place but I couldn’t be doing with Milton Keynes. Just endless long dead straight roads & the infamous concrete cows.

Bananasatchristmas · 21/06/2026 09:04

Ely gives me the creeps. Objectively it’s fine, but I avoid it if I can.

JackJarvisEsq · 21/06/2026 09:06

Bradford

I genuinely felt scared and unsafe looking to buy a car there, and I’m from Glasgow!

literallyevery · 21/06/2026 09:06

Lowestoft

but also sadly my local city Portsmouth in the last 5 years has gone seriously down hill

Yes, people mentioning whole cities is really silly.

Sheffield is lovely in the main . Every city has its less nice bits.

alloutofcareunits · 21/06/2026 09:08

Ashington - locally also known as as Ashganistan
Blyth
Newbiggin by the Sea
a lot of Northumberland is beautiful but some parts are just awful! I covered the whole area for work, some of the worst places I’ve been in the world are in Northumberland

NCTDN · 21/06/2026 09:09

Can’t remember who said Weston Super Mare but whoever it was, if you think that’s bad then you really have never been to other seaside resorts. We had a friend saying how it was the Blackpool of the south. (He’d never been to Blackpool.) It really isn’t. It’s worlds apart. So sorry, I might be a northerner but I do agree with Blackpool which is sad because I have fond childhood memories of there. Lytham on the other hand is beautiful and not far from there.

Birmingham. Rubbish everywhere, rats, a lot of security in the main shopping centre and disorderly behaviour.

Was on a coach trip with my mother a few years ago. Final stop was the Birmingham Christmas Market. We were allowed 2 hours. Went to John Lewis and stayed there until it was time to get back in the coach. Filthy , dirty, intimidating place.

Bamboozle30001 · 21/06/2026 09:10

Stevenage and Watford

I hate these kind of threads, it’s basically bashing the whole of the north! No wonder we are all peed off and annoyed everything is London centric! There’s so much deprivation because we don’t get the funding.

its just a thread about laughing at all the ‘poor northern people’ in their horrible towns! We can’t all afford to live in fancy areas but we have feelings!

There are loads of places mentioned that aren’t in the north of England. Not least, Haverfordwest and Lowestoft. Though I disagree that they are awful places, H’west is far away to the west and Lowestoft is literally as far east as you can go.

Add in Glastonbury, Tunbridge Wells, Croydon, Portsmouth, Bedford, Bournemouth, Luton, Falmouth and of course London and you’re nowhere near correct. Not just London, but specifically parts of London. I don’t know if you count Northampton as The North? I don’t but some do. Most are mentioned several times and these are just the ones I can remember.

I agree that northerners by default seem to be resentful about everywhere else and think that Londoners look down on them when the reality is that Londoners don’t even think about them at all. If you can generalise, then so will I.

HoppityBun · 21/06/2026 09:12

And I forgot to include that the whole of Norfolk has been condemned.

What? Brighton beach is terrible!

Agree. Horrid pebbles, ghastly pier and nasty water.

Went to the coroners office there with my adult son after his father committed suicide in a hotel at the MK Don's stadium. Such a weird soulless , grey place. Some nice villages around it. Stopped at a farm shop in one of them for breakfast.

I’ve got a soft spot for Newport- have been many times. It’s not posh or affluent or gentrified but the people are mostly friendly (even to English folk like me!) and there is some lovely countryside around the area.

There are two Newports in Wales . I presume you mean the bigger one as the other one is idyllic.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/06/2026 09:15

It appears that pronounce every town in the UK is a bit shit.

Lived in Birmingham for decades, moved away, it’s like some lawless dystopia now! I think we should just build a big wall round it )preferably with a large dome on top and really deep foundations. Has zero redeeming features to it. It’s a lost cause
