Older teens shoes - why won’t they have their toes visible?!

My DD (17) is wearing trainers with everything even though it’s boiling. She said it’s weird to show your toes and nobody does! She’s not a heels person (neither am I) but I love my sandals, sliders, flip flops etc.

What does your 17/18 year old wear on their feet with shorts, summer trousers or summer dresses?

Im with the teen on this one....toes are weird!
Trainers or Converse.

LilacDrift · 19/06/2026 21:59

Nearly every teen I see are wearing trainers. Crocs sometimes. It's just how it is.

starballoons · 19/06/2026 22:00

Mine are the same trainers or crocs only, flip flops only by the pool on holiday but generally wouldn’t be seen dead with their toes out

It’s very normal for teens to wear trainers, converse or crocs with any outfit

Ponderingwindow · 19/06/2026 22:01

Yep. Won’t show her toes. Right pain when it is already very hard to find shoes in her size.

fashionqueen0123 · 19/06/2026 22:02

Mine is a bit younger but they all paint their toe nails and wear flip flops.
I can’t imagine wearing shoes in this weather unless really needed. Flip flops for me too!

Honeyhonay · 19/06/2026 22:04

I don’t think shoes are a massive deal for most people when it’s hot, you’re still expected to wear normal shoes in school and many offices.
It hasn’t even been overly hot in most of the south, certainly no temperatures where trainers aren’t a perfectly normal thing to wear.

KizzyKoala · 19/06/2026 22:06

Clearly not just mine then! When did it become social suicide to show your toes?!

What do they wear with sparkly party dresses then - she’s just bought two and needs something to wear with them. New (clean!) converse? High tops or low with party dresses? What colour?

No free feet… They’ve had it drummed into them that feet are sexualised.

PurpleLovecats · 19/06/2026 22:08

I never show my feet, I absolutely hate feet.

Oh is that what it is! Blimey I had no idea!

Blame the internet and a shit load of misogyny - a third of it about how disgusting it is to show them because they're sexual, a third that it's disgusting to show them because a perfectly normal part of the body is revolting unless they're deemed OF worthy and the other third that men will be disgusting leches about them.

ItIsGreen · 19/06/2026 22:08

I stuck hairy toe Croc charms in DD crocs, but then I'm a dickhead.
Fashion is odd. When I was a teen I wouldn't be seen dead with a stubbly armpit. Now armpits are hairy, or not, as you prefer on any day of the week and toes are gross, shameful and should be kept hidden at all costs

It is funny 😂 Armpit hair on, pubic hair off, backside out, toes in.

I'm quite grateful to them for making it OK to wear socks with sandals, though!

UnderThePressure · 19/06/2026 22:18

Crocs, ballerina flats and birkenstock clogs for my older teen daughter.

Prombles · 19/06/2026 22:19

Maybe their toenails aren't instagram-ready 😆

Anyone remember (before instagram) "Your toenails are so grody!"

Bufftailed · 19/06/2026 22:19

Because ‘no one wants to see that’

mindutopia · 19/06/2026 22:19

Mine wears flip flops and crocs (and sliders but with socks, which is hideous). I don’t think teens would wear sandals or open toed formal shoes because that screams “I’m 55+” even to me. Surely, with a formal dress they’d just wear closed toed formal shoes, right? Either heels or flats.

It’s the same for boys though. Socks & sliders. For my DC & mates it’s just a trend like any other. Weird for those of us for whom socks and sandals was the ultimate no no

Let her wear whatever she’s comfortable in!
i hate having bare feet outside and other than around the house, I struggle to wear anything that doesn’t lace up.

More than happy for her to wear whatever she likes. She is usually a jeans/shorts person. Now she’s just bought two summer/party dresses for two upcoming birthday parties she needs something new. I could just buy a new pair of converse then. High or low with a party dress and what’s the thinking on colours?

It's up to her surely?

People are wearing socks with sandals?! 😮 now I know I’m old! 😬

DMs are my daughters footwear of choice with a pretty frock. Great big clodhopping monstrosities. I think there must be a new rule, the less material in the dress, the bigger the boots. She looks great though!

I will never wear socks with any kind of shoe like that it’s still a horror to me! And I hate crocs. I find it so weird how teens are wearing them. They’re so ugly! They seem like shoes someone would wear in the garden as either an older person or a toddler.
