Older teens shoes - why won’t they have their toes visible?!

My DD (17) is wearing trainers with everything even though it’s boiling. She said it’s weird to show your toes and nobody does! She’s not a heels person (neither am I) but I love my sandals, sliders, flip flops etc.

What does your 17/18 year old wear on their feet with shorts, summer trousers or summer dresses?

I love crocs. I hate wearing socks or shoes tbh. I should embrace my inner hippy and just be barefoot as much as possible.

I don’t think shoes are a massive deal for most people when it’s hot, you’re still expected to wear normal shoes in school and many offices.
It hasn’t even been overly hot in most of the south, certainly no temperatures where trainers aren’t a perfectly normal thing to wear.

They won’t need trainers soon after school/work!

The first thing my kids did after school was take their shoes off and get their feet out. They’d love to go in other shoes but obviously not allowed at school. It was about 29c here.

More than happy for her to wear whatever she likes. She is usually a jeans/shorts person. Now she’s just bought two summer/party dresses for two upcoming birthday parties she needs something new. I could just buy a new pair of converse then. High or low with a party dress and what’s the thinking on colours?

She’s old enough to work this out herself!

It’s socks and sliders not sandals! Or Birkenstock clogs.

TheChosenTwo · 19/06/2026 23:10

This isn’t teen specific, I don’t get my feet out (and I wish the rest of the people I encounter followed suit 😂), feet are just horrible!
one of mine wears crocs and all 3 are happiest in trainers. Beach/pool it’s flip flops, same for me.
haven’t died from having warm feet yet.
And it’s nothing to do with people having a foot fetish for me, I just hate feet.

mondaytosunday · 19/06/2026 23:15

My son wore (and still does at 22) sliders around the house. He wears a sort of upmarket flip flop in summer. My DD is not adverse to sandals when a teen (21 now).

Huckleberries · 19/06/2026 23:16

This is baffling me

It people are saying that teenagers have made socks and sandals or crocs - they have made them fashionable? Why?

Also, someone said that an open toe for more shoe or sandal screams 55+

What? Where would Carrie Bradshaw's famous Manolo's be on the scale? I know this old now. But if you look at the shoes from the famous episode about shoes, those type of shoes don't scream 55+ do they? I mean, obviously you can wear them if you're over 55. But did teenagers consider those shoes really sad or something? I'm so confused.

SadiraOfTyr · 19/06/2026 23:23

DS15 is barefoot whenever possible. He’ll happily walk out over the commons and round the woods for miles barefoot, even in the snow. His soles are like saddle hide and he can walk across gorse without even feeling it. It’s a sensory thing really, he just hates wearing shoes.

Yes teenagers consider those shoes really sad. Heels in general are sad, open toe ones doubly so. They’re just something out of ancient TV shows and films as far as they are concerned.

rockstarshoes · 19/06/2026 23:25

Yeah what about the Hermes sandals that have dupes in every single shop? New Look, ASOS etc Are they not interested in them? Surely they don’t scram 55 plus!

DD has prom next week and has bought a pair of strappy heels. I was really surprised as I was expecting her to use it as a reason to argue for a new pair of trainers. She will also be taking slides as she has never worn heels so to start off with a pair which are 6cm is ambitious, especially when recovering from a knee injury!

Pistachiocake · 19/06/2026 23:33

starballoons · 19/06/2026 22:00

Mine are the same trainers or crocs only, flip flops only by the pool on holiday but generally wouldn’t be seen dead with their toes out

And a lot of them have socks with sliders, at the pool! I saw this a couple of years ago (I suppose when the Millennial no show/ankle socks jokes were at their height among Gen Z) and was told that's what all the footballers do.
I wonder if this generation will have more fungal issues?

We saw a bit of a school prom today - a small group outside the venue either leaving or having a smoke, not sure

Anyway I was struck by how wonderful the girls dresses were - but they were all wearing those kind of shoes, admittedly only saw a few outside the venue, but there were at least four girls in heels and now I think about it, the one girl had this incredibly strikingly beautiful green dress but also had green shoes to match that really reminded me of Carrie's Manolo with an open toe and that kind of jewel bit at the front.

It’s the same for boys though. Socks & sliders. For my DC & mates it’s just a trend like any other. Weird for those of us for whom socks and sandals was the ultimate no no

Socks and sliders have been going for about 15 years, it was wearing recovery footwear in breaks/after sport - the first boys doing it at work were into athletics and it spread to the football crowd. Emulating athletes for a decade and a half is different to girls being taught that they're exposing something more intimate than what's visible when they roll their skirts up so high they can never lift their arms above rib level.

Is it really odd to you that different generation’s have different styles? Do you dress the same as your mother?

PickAChew · 19/06/2026 23:58

Most trainers are just mesh fabric, anyhow. Far better for feet than unsupportive sandals that shred your skin.

ThreeGreen · 20/06/2026 00:03

When I started my grad scheme in 2008 we had a training session on how to dress professionally. The lady taking it told us that women should never wear open toe shoes to an office as it made men think of cleavage. Too traumatised to weat open toe shoes to work but live in flip flops outside of it!

DrCoconut · 20/06/2026 00:05

15 year old DS wears sport socks and sliders. But he only wears shorts for the leisure centre, it joggers and trainers the rest of the time unless school.

TallSturdyGirls · 20/06/2026 00:08

LilacDrift · 19/06/2026 21:59

Nearly every teen I see are wearing trainers. Crocs sometimes. It's just how it is.

Where are teens wearing crocs? They would be banished around here!

Folkwhore · 20/06/2026 00:09

Socks and sliders is the vibe as far as I understand from my teens. Getting ‘the dogs’ out (toes) is social suicide unless you are going to prom in heels…..

starballoons · 20/06/2026 01:13

KizzyKoala · 19/06/2026 22:06

Clearly not just mine then! When did it become social suicide to show your toes?!

What do they wear with sparkly party dresses then - she’s just bought two and needs something to wear with them. New (clean!) converse? High tops or low with party dresses? What colour?

Hi top converse with short dresses for my teen - she’s got some platform ones which are usually her choice. I quite like that look tbh! Nice at parties that the girls look comfy rather than tottering around in heels!

patooties · 20/06/2026 01:38

My dd is wearing mexicos (yellow onitsuga tiger ones) and Mary Jane’s made out of mesh.

DS is wearing sliders (with socks) and trainers.

grinandslothit · 20/06/2026 02:29

I think they just move through different trends just like we did when we were younger

I tend to wear closed toe shoes these days because I really don't like stubbing my toes on anything

Overtheatlantic · 20/06/2026 02:56

I love reading about the different trends with teens. Working at a university I see a lot of the youngsters wearing balloon jeans and trainers but I’ve never seen a single bare foot or a toe belonging to an under 20. What must they think of us oldies!
