Older teens shoes - why won’t they have their toes visible?!

My DD (17) is wearing trainers with everything even though it’s boiling. She said it’s weird to show your toes and nobody does! She’s not a heels person (neither am I) but I love my sandals, sliders, flip flops etc.

What does your 17/18 year old wear on their feet with shorts, summer trousers or summer dresses?

Heels were completely out.

they’re slowly making their way back in but the old style high stiletto is considered very old fashioned.
my dd won’t wear them at all even to bleak toe dos like prom or similar.

goth/emo/metal is quite in at the moment as is nineties clothing so the whole delicate dress with clompy boots is very fashionable.

dd will wear flip flops or sliders at the pool or beach but not elsewhere.

sliders and socks has been around at least a decade if not more.

familyicons · 20/06/2026 03:45

I don't know when toes became a thing

Their loss

Duvetdayforme · 20/06/2026 06:52

Gen Z and Alpha have been exposed to a lot of foot fetish 💩 online.

Getting your feet out in public, if you’re not swimming or sunbathing is socially unacceptable.

“who let the dogs out” etc

Gosh I remember my mum forcing me to buy sandals with my own money in my mid teens as I needed them (in her opinion). Never wore them. This was in the 90s.

hate toes. Do have a couple of pairs of sandals now but they’re mostly worn to quickly trip out to the park with the kids. Straps hurt my feet, my feet feel sweaty without socks to wick away moisture, and they get visibly dirty from the crap all over the place. I don’t understand the appeal! Bizarrely I prefer bare foot rather than pretending they’re pretty in something else. I know this is illogical, I don’t care!

KizzyKoala · 19/06/2026 22:06

Clearly not just mine then! When did it become social suicide to show your toes?!

What do they wear with sparkly party dresses then - she’s just bought two and needs something to wear with them. New (clean!) converse? High tops or low with party dresses? What colour?

I think you are really over involved with all of this.
It doesn't matter what colour, your 17/18 year old is perfectly able to pick the colour of their footwear I'm sure.

RampantIvy · 20/06/2026 07:05

For goodness sake! What is it with some mumsnetters and their hatred of feet?

Get over yourselves.

I look after my feet. I don't have cracked skin or hairy toes. I get pedicures in the summer and my feet are perfectly presentable.

I can't think of anything more sweaty and uncomfortable than wearing trainers in hot weather.

PetiteParakeet · 20/06/2026 07:11

I feel so fortunate being in an older generation for this one! I‘ve got wide feet and loathe enclosed shoes in hot weather, my feet feel so hot and constricted. Always a happy day when I can put sandals on with my jeans for the first time.
I suppose the girls have escaped expectations to wear heels at least, but it’s just swapping one uncomfortable rule for another. And so ridiculous, the idea that toes are obscene or repulsive. Social media (as ever) has a lot to answer for.

Newlittlerescue · 20/06/2026 07:20

bleak toe dos like prom or similar.

😅😅

What a glorious autocorrect in a post that goes on to talk about emo/goth style!

rockstarshoes · 19/06/2026 23:25

Yeah what about the Hermes sandals that have dupes in every single shop? New Look, ASOS etc Are they not interested in them? Surely they don’t scram 55 plus!

My older teen nieces wear the ‘hermes style’ sandals. They also wear heels clubbing. Wouldn’t be seen dead in crocs or sliders and apparently the will only wear trainers is v much associated with young teens that don’t have anywhere good to go. But they live in the south of france so hotter weather and dressier clubbing scene.

More than happy for her to wear whatever she likes. She is usually a jeans/shorts person. Now she’s just bought two summer/party dresses for two upcoming birthday parties she needs something new. I could just buy a new pair of converse then. High or low with a party dress and what’s the thinking on colours?

If it was my DDs the 17 year old would wear her high top converse with a summer dress and the other would wear her white Nike trainers. I would go with white because they look fresh and can go with any colour dress but ask your DD I’m sure she’d tell you what she wants to wear

BigLightOff · 20/06/2026 08:31

I don’t blame them tbh. Sandals are so much sweatier than trainers and socks, then there’s the issue of blisters because of the sweat and your feet get dirty.

She is 17, you don’t need to be this invested. Unless you are planning to buy her some clothes in which case I would recommend either a shopping trip with her so she can choose or give her cash and let her crack on.

I have seen many many threads o er the years about teens wearing too revealing outfits but ‘my teen wears trainers with everything’ is seriously weird. So what? People go to work every day of summer wearing shoes and no toes out.

I disagree. My feet feel much hotter and sweatier in socks and trainers.

Zanatdy · 20/06/2026 08:56

I rarely wear sandals anymore either, hate my feet! My teens never show their feet either.

Lomonald · 20/06/2026 09:00

PurpleLovecats · 19/06/2026 22:08

I never show my feet, I absolutely hate feet.

Me too, i don't think ive had any issues with wearing trainers on a hot day, my dds would never worn sandals at 17.

I know everyone is different but for me it’s like blokes who say it’s cooler with their tops off when actually I don’t think it is it just feels like it should be. When there’s nowhere for the sweat to go so it sits on the skin I feel hotter, and in sandals damp skin equals blisters and dirt sticking to my feet. Having dirty feet makes me feel hot.

Why not just let her choose? Give her the money to buy them or just get her to send you links to the ones she likes. My Ds is 14 and I couldn’t even guess what type of trainers and clothes he likes now. He just picks what he likes and I get them! (Dependent on what money I have, obviously)!

bleak toe dos? Typo or did I miss yet more? 😂

No free feet… They’ve had it drummed into them that feet are sexualised.

But then they don’t mind putting their arse cheeks on display? Weird.

We saw a bit of a school prom today - a small group outside the venue either leaving or having a smoke, not sure

Anyway I was struck by how wonderful the girls dresses were - but they were all wearing those kind of shoes, admittedly only saw a few outside the venue, but there were at least four girls in heels and now I think about it, the one girl had this incredibly strikingly beautiful green dress but also had green shoes to match that really reminded me of Carrie's Manolo with an open toe and that kind of jewel bit at the front.

Well I suppose it varies by area, class etc. But heEle’s are considered naff (or rather “cringe”) by teens here. It’s all vintage and Vans for school proms and the like.

Teen Logic ! i don't understand the tiny shorts and hoody combo my neighbours teenager wears it looks like she is half naked 😳

DMs are my daughters footwear of choice with a pretty frock. Great big clodhopping monstrosities. I think there must be a new rule, the less material in the dress, the bigger the boots. She looks great though!

Yes, to this!
In winter I wear giant chonky boots, esp with frocks. Summer I have multiple colours of Converse hi tops to wear.
Although I am over 50 so Im probably doing it wrong!😆
