A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Rwanda is sueing them for breaking the contract.

I think i read in the wee small hours that Starmer is determined to push through the Chagos islands deal before he goes,

AFAIK some sort of international court found for the UK and Rwanda can’t recover any money.

No bloody way. What a fool he is. Just go already!

EasternStandard · 26/06/2026 11:42

Badbadbunny · 26/06/2026 10:42

The UK was way down the road of such a scheme with Rwanda but one of Starmer's first (of many) idiotic moves was to scrap the scheme. It makes him and the UK look even more stupid now. Again, though, playing politics rather than doing what's best for the country, just like all the "politics of envy" and "rub the right's noses" that have done lots of damage to the Labour party, and yet they just don't see it!

Yes he was an idiot on that. It’ll come back to bite as the EU have given the go ahead via votes to do similar.

His “achievements” seem to be mostly doing the UK down.

I can’t see Burnham being pragmatic. We’ll have to pay for all his fancies, too.

Bullandbear · 26/06/2026 11:23

Such an obvious policy.

Last week 150 ‘Somalians’ applied for asylum in Ireland. They would have had to pass through at least two - and more likely half a dozen - safe countries to do so.

We also have the absurd situation where kebab shop owners (all ***) are granted skilled worker visas to bring their family and friends to Ireland to join them in their slicing!

Last but not least the abuse of student visas as a means to become regularised in a country - there’s a reason why thousands of * are studying in DCU and other Irish universities, and it ain’t the education.

I am curious about this post of yours bullandbear. Might I ask you a question or two?

Why 'Somalians' in quotation marks? Why the use of asterisks in "(all )" and "thousands of are studying"?

Burnham has no guiding philosophy. He’s just a political showman, chopping and changing as suits the audience of the day.

Governments run by politicians like that lack coherence and focus. I think we’re in for government by slogan and gimmick.

No problem @MellowZebra

The Somali reference is because not all arrivals are of determined origin but Somalis make up one of the largest group of immigrants to Ireland, purportedly because its an easier route to the UK (given the open border).

The asterisks are to avoid mentioning another documented group, which will probably get the post pulled.

I don't think MN would pull posts for specifying which "documented group" you were referring to, unless you were using a derogatory term or stereotyping etc. I find it strange you would think that. But thank you for answering my questions.

No derogatory term used, but I am confident in my assertion.

I will leave the post as is.

I didn't suggest you were using a derogatory term, to be clear. I cited that as an example of when MN might delete a post.

@Pacificwave I posted some links to studies about that in the winter

Honestly, I don't know what it's going take to get people to see.

In other news, people are seriously weird on other threads or I have maybe got taken in chatting to AI? I suppose the heat is getting to everybody.

It's not forecast to calm down in My area

So, I don't know how to get the flat to calm down

I saw a thing earlier saying that people need to be wary of booking into hotels with Aircon because it's too hot for a lot of systems to cope with it

The fridge and freezer in my old flat used to pack up every single summer because it wasn't designed to cope with the temperature around it being more than 35°

Such is the joy of the way we've built property since about the year 2000. 🙄

all those posh flats that get bought by investors in London, foreign investors I mean, they've all got air-conditioning. I think a lot of of those were built in the 90s. Obviously looking at prices that I couldn't consider.

But I think they were built so that you either get heat or cool air through the same vents? Makes a lot of sense. Is that the air pump source thing that people were talking about? I can see the issue there. If it feeds the whole building then if the heat or the air goes, then that's going to be a massive repair job?

also, you can't go to your neighbour and say "please can I hang out in your heat or air for a bit?" But a lot of people don't seem to know the neighbours so I suppose that's not a factor in planning 😂

I've got a heat pump, and there is a bit where you can switch it to cooling mode, and it's been disabled - pre-2025 it wasn't allowed in England, and still isn't in Scotland.
In theory it should be a good technology to use for cooling, much for efficient than standard aircon.

SapphireCasino · 26/06/2026 14:34

@SpaceRaccoon it's been disabled! That is truly bonkers. Why would it not be allowed?!

there is apparently something under my bath that's been disabled to reduce the water pressure. Bonkers. Takes Ages to fill the bath.

Also, you can't fill the bath properly here. I could get the overflow thing moved, I suppose.

I also had to undo the shower head so it could be detached. The building firm said it was a safety measure to do with backflow? But fortunately it was easy to alter - i didnt have the physical strength to do it but managed to get someone to do it for me. Poles had to be moved. It was weird.

Building regs as a whole need reviewing probably. It's as if it only takes one poor choice for a whole system to go nuts.

really we need a party to stand for basics and common sense.

@SapphireCasino

there is apparently something under my bath that's been disabled to reduce the water pressure. Bonkers. Takes Ages to fill the bath.

Don't know if it's the same, but we experienced the same when our plumber fitted a new boiler and bathroom for us. We immediately noticed the bath took forever to fill, far longer than previously and that the taps didn't "flow" anywhere near as strongly as previously. We asked him about it and he just fobbed us off saying "it's modern regulations".

Turns out that he'd actually put a couple of short narrow pipes under the bath to reduce the pressure/flow. We noticed it when DH took off the bath panel when he laid new flooring. Each was just a few inches long and then the width went back to normal width towards the taps. So it was something intentionally done by the plumber.

Then we noticed the boiler would fault when we tried running the sink taps on full.

Plumber wasn't interested in coming back to look into it, and just told us to get our the boiler engineer as it was under warranty and it was nothing he could do!

The boiler firm engineer immediately saw the problem was low gas pressure, hence it cutting out when under full draw. The guy said the plumber must have put the shorter bits of pipe in to stop it cutting out if we tried to fill the bath too quickly under full pressure! Apparently a common "fix" rather than dealing with the fundamental issue of low gas pressure to the house. So the plumber knew about it and covered it up because it would slow down the job to get out the gas supply firm to put in wider gas supply pipework. Nice of him to tell us! Once we had the new supply pipes installed, no more faults and DH took out the little bits of pipe under the bath and ever since, we've been back to being able to fill the bath as quickly as before!

Maybe something to check??

It's weirdly tightly regulated! Like I don't think you can remove the heat pump to go back to a gas/oil boiler once it's in, and I think they (govt) have the right to demand energy consumption details from you as well.

I've resisted the smart meter at least.

SapphireCasino · 26/06/2026 15:24

@Badbadbunny in our case it's definitely a new build green target. I was warned about it before I moved in.

Unlike @SpaceRaccoon with the heat pump, I am allowed to change the plumbing. It's just the new build company have stupid green targets that they have to meet. Although I'm not 100% sure what's guidelines and what's law. There's all kind of stupid stuff they had to do to get planning permission here. There was also something about the provision of electric car chargers. There is a course a debate about who pays for the supply of electricity to the car chargers....

The thing under the bath limits the water temp. Utter pain in the arse. We have that, plus the bath with the low sodding overflow so you can only have a shallow bath. I don't bother as, being tall, it makes for a miserable bathing experience!
