A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I know, its weird that the govt announce it as if it will be popular. It won't.
Just shows how completely out of touch they are with the public.

The quotes from bollard at the end I can just hear them in that adenoidal voice 😂

He said he’d stop using hotels so that’s what he’ll do (staccato)

People don’t want to swap smaller hotels with 1500 men in barracks.

Middlerage · 26/06/2026 09:15

As usual, what bothers people most about concentrated numbers has completely bypassed him.

Yep

I also remember Starmer and co arguing against using military bases in opposition.

This is not going to go down well at all.

You think they're asking permission?

For some reason I'm getting lots of European and USA migrant issues popping up on Instagram.. Knifings, murders, violent protests, etc. people are angry on both sides. I saw a huge one in Houston Texas I had no idea how many Muslims had settled there. But they were marching through the city. Paris music festival at the weekend complete anarchy. Our protests are very peaceful by comparison.

Middlerage · 26/06/2026 09:20

I do think it’s the future, as we move to a multi party country more protests as the consensus fragments…

Nuthatch26 · 26/06/2026 09:24

This made me laugh 😂

Kemi Badenoch has mocked Labour after a senior party figure claimed Andy Burnham would be their “first woman prime minister”.

Badenoch mocks Labour over claim Burnham will be like a ‘female PM’

There was an awful case in France with Louis a 17 year old teen boy. Really sad to see.

Yep they won’t ask permission they’ll just bulldoze it through. People won’t like it and will vote accordingly.

Nuthatch26 · 26/06/2026 09:59

For those still sticking up for Starmer, and claiming that he is decent and did some good, polling shows the public are very happy that he's resigned.

@Nuthatch26 thank you for the link

Twice the population of the village is really shocking.

But it shouldn't be, I suppose - they will literally have thought in terms of how many locals can oppose it. I know with some other quiet locations they have moved them out pretty quickly but that's been in the interest of those housed in the hotels! Like they feel that the residents have nothing to do and so on

I heard about it yesterday because Lindsey Hoyle was annoyed about process? I think he was saying these things shouldn't just be announced in the Commons as a done deal?

I still think we are being gaslit about the hotels. It's not possible for Labour to pretend that they think the objection is about hotels themselves.

meanwhile, I'm genuinely horrified at the lack of air in my flat. It probably would've been worth the extra 300 quid to stay up north for a couple of nights. The hotel receptionist said to me "if you're not back at work, why don't you just stay here?" and I think she was right! They were complaining it was too hot there - it was about 28 at peak and there was a breeze. Which is fantastic compared to here!

Looking forward to Labour fans supporting this policy on MN. Or perhaps they'll just ignore it, as per.

Edited

Not sure they do know, they announced it like it's something to be proud of.
They think closing the hotels will improve their standing with the public, who they assume are too stupid to understand that the migrants haven't disappeared just because they aren't in hotels.

Interesting that Farage's 'very bad job' rating is not far off Starmer's

This isn't really surprising, I don't think. With the £5m bung payment being in the press and Reform's inability to make headway in by elections, I imagine people are seeing his true colours. Which is good news!

Pacificwave · 26/06/2026 10:06

Europe has cleared the way for offshore detention and processing. If we don’t do the same, we will be a magnet.

And we already are a magnet for so many reasons

@Nuthatch26 I can't get my head around how anyone could be so completely out of touch but I also am really suspicious of this whole government. I think they have very specific aims and if they feel that gaslighting will help them achieve those aims they will do it

Well, I suppose any government would do it - I don't know which is more alarming, if they really don't realise what the objections are or if they are just playing a weird game.

The UK was way down the road of such a scheme with Rwanda but one of Starmer's first (of many) idiotic moves was to scrap the scheme. It makes him and the UK look even more stupid now. Again, though, playing politics rather than doing what's best for the country, just like all the "politics of envy" and "rub the right's noses" that have done lots of damage to the Labour party, and yet they just don't see it!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 26/06/2026 11:07

Where have EU states proposed for third-country processing? IIRC Italy agreed something with Albania (may well be wrong about that). Are there any other deals or discussions that are known of?

I watched that vote and the cheering when the landslide of votes was put up. There where a couple of female meps said that they no longer felt safe in Europe. They're in Brussels. Do they ever walk the streets. Ask the Belgians how they feel at the loss of their country how safe they feel.

Current proposals include Albania, Rwanda, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Egypt, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Armenia, and Montenegro.

Denmark, Germany, Austria, Greece, & the Netherlands have been in active talks with several African countries to establish additional return hubs particularly Rwanda.

Italy has finalised a deal with Albania.

Netherlands seem to be close to a deal with Uganda.

Rwanda is sueing them for breaking the contract.

I think i read in the wee small hours that Starmer is determined to push through the Chagos islands deal before he goes,

Europe has cleared the way for offshore detention and processing. If we don’t do the same, we will be a magnet.

Such an obvious policy.

Last week 150 ‘Somalians’ applied for asylum in Ireland. They would have had to pass through at least two - and more likely half a dozen - safe countries to do so.

We also have the absurd situation where kebab shop owners (all ***) are granted skilled worker visas to bring their family and friends to Ireland to join them in their slicing!

Last but not least the abuse of student visas as a means to become regularised in a country - there’s a reason why thousands of * are studying in DCU and other Irish universities, and it ain’t the education.

Bullandbear · 26/06/2026 11:26

Meanwhile.

Polish immigrants are being urged by their own government to cash in on British benefits before returning home.

Advice published on Powroty, a Polish government website for citizens living abroad who wish to return home, says “when leaving the UK, it is worth considering whether you are eligible for Jobseeker’s Allowance”.

Post-Brexit arrangements allow European Union citizens who acquired settled status before December 2020 to transfer some benefit payments abroad when they move to an EU country, for up to three months.

It means those returning to Europe can claim hundreds of pounds from the British taxpayer to support their job hunt, despite not searching for work in the UK.

Thousands of Poles have left Britain since Brexit, with many returning home to enjoy their country’s growing economic fortunes.

Poland is attempting to lure back citizens and professionals to sustain an extraordinary period of economic growth that has narrowed the income gap with rival Western economies and reversed a sustained period of emigration – in particular to Britain, after Poland joined the EU.

Thank you. That’s really interesting.

It seems that Labour’s decision to cancel Rwanda is going to make it look very foolish and out of step. The Tories were ahead of the issue.
