A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Just back from early walk with DDogs and I have had to pick up TWO bottles of Champagne on the way home! One for BollardRiddance and the other for Brexit vote anniversary tomorrow.

That bloody music is the execrable Steve Bray, a LibDem who causes constant disruption in Westminster yet never seems to get an exclusion order or any other punishment.

I was working and missed all this live. But I’ve caught up as far as I can quickly via BBC online.

I do not think Starmer’s speech, or what I’ve seen of it, was good. I think it was par for the course for him. Badly delivered and self-serving. I’m sorry to say that I think his emotion was all about reaction to his own humiliation, not about affection for others.

I do not think there is any worthwhile legacy.

I do not think the left would have the slightest sympathy for any right-wing PM in Starmer’s position.

I can’t even find it in me to be sad for him on a personal level. He was so obnoxious to everyone in his way that I just feel this is all well-deserved. I have certainly felt bad for failed or troubled Labour figures in the past, even defended them if I think they’ve been wrongly treated. But not Starmer. He brought this on himself.

Those Labour voices that said that Badenoch would be deposed as Tory leader before Starmer lost his job…egg meet face.

I assume you mean early for you, @TheNoWord, not actual early, as I went out at 5.30 with FluffyDog this morning (and will all week). That was early!

I imagine Streeting has been offered a plum role by Burnham (any reason he wouldn't return to health?) to avoid a contest.

The chancellor role is scary due to distinct lack of talent!

Streeting will be out of cabinet again within a year. He’s regarded as wholly untrustworthy and is despised by the party left.

And it’s the left who now think they’re in the driving seat. Burnham’s main job will be fighting off spending demands from backbenchers and ambitious left-wing ministers. Which will be economic suicide if he agrees, and the end of his PM-ship if he doesn’t.

smallglassbottle · Yesterday 11:47

Streeting will be doing an NVQ 1 in economics as we speak 🙈

Another two years of no governance then. Great.

Not quite that early @NoWordForFluffy though we were up at 6am. Had to wait for the shopping to arrive which was of course late, but we went up onto the cliffs where there was a lovely breeze and only did a mile. Was 26C when we got home which is about the limit for the girls. They are now exploring the paddling pool, I bought on the way home; DurableDog straight in it, DelicateDog looking at it like it’s the seventh pit of hell 😆

DH keen to open the fizz already but I have tasks for him to do in the garden first, involving sharp objects, so elf and safety first.

Gilt yields up and pound falling. Gilt yields now falling and pound now up again in last few minutes after Streeting gave his backing to Burnham. Sigh…It’s going to be a hell of a financial roller coaster for the next few weeks.

I see we are being told that nominations for the leadership are opening on 9th July, new leader by September.

I started these threads in Spring 2025, not 'within minutes' of the election. 😂
No point lashing out as us darlings, we didn't bring him down. He managed that all by himself.

Many of us did try to warn you of how shit Starmer would be. Less than two years in, we have been vindicated.

Should have stuck with Sunak. Labour will be back in opposition where they belong in 3 years max.

Yep. Probably better to hide our thread than read and seethe 😬

So many got it wrong re Starmer, it was obvious at the time. Blame yourself, blame Starmer don’t go for the happier people today 😅

I missed it all as haven’t been online and then was cleaning out my bin in the garden while he was giving his speech 😂 a bit of a metaphor I think

Claude, teach me how to be chancellor…tbh, if the next one actually listens to, ummm, economists, we might be better off.

Ereshkigalangcleg · Yesterday 12:07

Streeting is ambitious, pretty sharp and wants to be successful in his own right so I’d much rather him as Chancellor, notwithstanding my personal dislike of him and his shortcomings and weaseliness, than Mad Ed.

Though starmer was shit I'm really worried about what comes next.

Me too. I don’t want a ramping up of socialism. I want good old fashioned Conservatism

Income tax next. 50% tax. Not sure where the threshold will be. Vat they can bump up. Other countries do.

TBH, I'd never have put Streeting and sharp in the same sentence.

Streeting will be doing an NVQ 1 in economics as we speak 🙈

If he passes, based solely on her performance to date, he'll be more qualified than Rachel from Accounts.

Euston platform 13 / 14 whichever it is sounds hectic rn 😅

DancingFerret · Yesterday 13:47

Quentin Letts on the UK's soon-to-be erstwhile PM: "A disappointing old pudding."

It's an informative essay and sets out very clearly why KS was always going to be a disaster - and why Peter Hitchens (the journalist) repeatedly warned the electorate against voting Labour in 2024.

Haha. I put the news on for 5 mins in my lunch break, and they had a chopper following his train. 🤣🤣
"We will end the chaos" - obviously not!

Platform 13 is not a good start 😬

Platform 9 3/4 would be more appropriate given AB is predicted by some to work his "magic" on Labour.
