I think he might mean the Remain campaign rather than the voters.

I'm not a massive Sir Alan fan (despite having a n Amstrad PC).

However, he ain't wrong.

Fun fact- my first proper job was in a business bought by Alan Sugar. The first thing he did was close it and make us all redundant,. He's not one of my favourite people, I always wanted to go on the apprentice to get to the end and say fuck no to working with him. No pettiness from me.

I'm also not a fan of Karen "business bought by daddy" Brady preaching about how easy it is to be successful.

Sugar being a Labour supporter always puzzled me because he certainly wasn't showing Labour values when he threw my life upside-down.

My date hadn’t realised this was a thing - I don’t know how it passed him by - he also wondered if it were anything linked to winning/losing or the added alcohol.

That's a red flag.

It's widely known amongst all the population.

Well normally I’d agree, but it’s just actually incredible (baffling) management of not let much of things that happen in real life infiltrate his bumbling brain instead!

And Sunderland voted yes in the referendum 😖

Raven08 · 17/06/2026 22:14

Don't labour understand that lots of people voted for them to stop the infighting and petty rivalries that informed uk (tory) politics in recent years!?
Reading tonight that KS wants AB is a "key role" in govt 🙄 and AB is allegedly going to refuse 🙄
Ffs!
KS was wrong to block AB at NEC...it made him look weak and scared and now he looks like an appeaser.
I did wonder if giving the BMA a deal for the jnr drs was in part to make WS look weak?
It's easy to spout "vote winning" policies from the sidelines (waspi women for example)...but harder once you gain power... as AB may discover.
I will be really unhappy if AB challenges KS and wins...I don't understand why he is seen as labours saviour 🤷‍♀️

And Sunderland voted yes in the referendum 😖

Do you mean yes as in leave?

I remember the the discussion re the wording of the referendum.

As in.

The referendum question was:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

  1. Remain a member of the European Union

  2. Leave the European Union

This was a change from the original question that was proposed by Parliament, which was

‘Should the UK remain a member of the European Union?’

The question was changed after the required assessment by the UK’s Electoral Commission.

Sorry, I did mean to type "leave". The irony wasn't lost on political commentators, at the time.

And yet, this May, they demonstrated that they still think Farage has great ideas.

PickAChew · 17/06/2026 22:55

It is frustrating to see it unfolding,@Raven08 but I'm of the mind now that the challenge is going to happen sooner or later so I wish they would just get it over with then Burnham can discover for himself exactly how many hours of a honeymoon period the billionaire owned media and the BBC will give him before the froth starts again (zero, that will be. A change of leader will not make a jot of difference.)

placemats · 17/06/2026 23:21

I don't think Burnham cares about that. He's changed a lot. Would still vote for him if I lived in Wakefield.

Wouldn't in a leadership challenge.

Labour have come across as a bit directionless to be fair. It's not that they haven't done things. They have done a surprisingly amount much of it good. But there doesn't seem to be a cohesive vision for the country/for improving the country coming through. And probably related to that their coms are really really bad. Yes it's not helped by a hostile media and social media landscape but if you contrast it with how someone like Mamdani manages to put out his message. It just feels like there isn't the confidence there.
So whether or not a new leader would help I don't known. But they do need to get grip on it whoever's on charge. Because people want change/some sort of vision to get changed and Reform and Restore have that. It might be a mirage based on harmful lies but I don't think Labour can rely on just being better people.

Thats just it, though . It won't make a difference so why do it? Other than hubris/blind anbition/arrogance?
Its also entirely possible (sadly) that deform may win...

One of our speakers was discussing potential of a Reform government at SUTR meeting - it is a worry. We have to believe we can fight this - numbers of decent folk do seem to outnumber far right now as in what we see in demos and protests - but whether that translates into votes is difficult to tell.

The rhetoric though right up to some of Starmer’s own re Island of Strangers is impacting so many people and making them consider leaving already - so the problems are already here whatever happens- dreadful push of a dreadful narrative that I’d not have imagined happening here in 2026.

I don’t think Burnham will make a good difference at all - I think it will cause more attacks on the gov’t. I thought if they wanted/believed they needed a different leader then it would have been better down the line not in this sea of messiness. I can hope I’m wrong though.

I hope Burnham gets the seat still - but then again it leaves the Mayor up for grabs and Reform may push through there.

It is all quite depressing.

Though I expect the football cheered some up here hopefully!

Even better when 50% of the scorers are not considered 'properly' English by some parties

It would be rather funny if Burnham doesn't win the seat, but not that funny as obviously it would mean seeing Reform trash win.

It is incredible news.
But we do need to increase vaccination rates.

I think boys only started being offered the vaccine recently - I don’t know what the take up rate is for them, it’s helpful for them as well as girls/women.

HPV virus can cause anal cancers and throat cancers in males and significant loss of fertility.

Anal cancers in males caused by the HPV virus is not confined to bi-sexual, trans or gay males. It's prevalent in straight men as well.

My son got the vaccine.

Actually I think I might send him a GCSE English Language unit 2 paper - it’s the reading and understanding (largely) non fiction, including infographics, unit. It often asks them to extrapolate and analyse data. I’ll ask if he can a) supply his own answers to the questions (with evidence they are his…) and b) explain how someone who couldn’t read could attempt it, given the percentage who get a higher grade pass ( a figure I’ll have to check).
