Cars from your childhood

OldFred · Yesterday 20:10

I love watching Celebrity Antiques Road Trip where they get to drive really cool classic cars.
Some cars really take me back to my childhood in the late 70s/80s.
My mum had Datsun Cherry and dad drove a beast of a BMW which resembled a tank.
My brother had a Ford Capri which I loved.

What cars were a part of your childhood?

My mum had a custard yellow Mini clubman with the sort of black vinyl seats that gave you third degree burns in the summer. My dad had a series of Marina vans that had been used inside the British Leyland works and basically dissolved into a pile of rust as soon as they went outside. I remember the holes in the passenger side footwell fondly, and being chucked in the back on an old mattress and blankets to sleep away the trip to my grandparents was totally unsafe but great as a kid in the 70's

My mum had a polo but the sun roof completly opened to make it almost a cabriolet, I have such fond memories of that car. I also remember many mustard cars

OldFred · Yesterday 20:39

My first car was a white Polo, i named her Minty (I thought I was sooo original!).
Yes I remember lots of mustard colour cars, and brown ones too.

My mum had a Mini clubman, it was white with a wooden stripe down the side.

My first car was a Renault 5, I believe they have just released a new version having been discontinued for decades.

My dad had some good cars. One that stands out was a Sierra RS Cosworth. A good one of those now is anything from £50k to over £100k. He went from that to a Granada Scorpio.

My first car was a 900cc Mini Metro. Traded up to a Renault 11 Turbo and then a Citroen AX GT amongst others.

MrsMoastyToasty · Yesterday 22:15

Mum had a Triumph Herald. It had no seat belts.
Dad had company cars. I can remember a Ford Cortina and a Granada.

Greebosmum · Yesterday 22:16

Gosh, think I am older than you. Mum didn't drive, Dad had the following: Y model Ford, Ford Prefect, Ford Consul x 2, Ford Corsair and his last car was a Vauxhall Cavalier. Colours were black, black, black, red with grey bits, brown and red. I have had Ford Cortina (metallic green), Triumph Spitfire, Rover P4, Opal Kadett, Ford Sierra. Land Rover, Nissan Micra x 2. VW Polo, another Micra, Vauxhall Aguilla, Toyota Aygo and currently another Polo. I expect the Polo will be my last car because I hate driving. Will probably pack it in when I'm 70.

My dad had a Morris Oxford. Very comfy back seat, I used to sleep on the back seat on long journeys.
Best car journey ever

My dad mostly had estate cars - Volvos, Peugeot 505 and an Austin Montego estate. Shame they have gradually phased estate cars out now in favour of the SUV’s.
i grew up in a cul de sac and everyone had Ford’s - Cortina’s and Granadas mostly. They look small now compared to family cars of today

A 1978 Alfa Spyder. It was my dad's but he got bored with it breaking down all the time so it became my mum's car. I didn't realise how cool it was until much later in life.

Rhubarbsoap · Yesterday 22:21

As children we were driven round in:
Vauxhall Carlton
mini metro
Datsun sunny
Rover - of some sort!
Montego- this was burgundy
Gran had a massive white Volvo with leather bench seats - leather so we used to slide around all over the place!

my first car was a Vauxhall nova :)

MondeoFan · Yesterday 22:23

@EdinaTheConfessorthe Mini with the wood was known as a Mini Traveller

Elfie23 · Yesterday 22:27

My parents had a Vauxhall Carlton, a Austin Montego, a rover… a mini metro that our family of 5 went on holiday to Skegness in - how the hell they got everything in including 3 kids still baffles me today!

I remember sitting on a booster seat and our kiddy seat belts (similar to a 5 point harness) went under the seats and around a big bar in the boot!

HelpMeGetThrough · Yesterday 22:27

You want to watch Bangers and Cash OP. You go from the really old all the way up to “modern” (well, 70s, 80s and 90s).

RaininSummer · Yesterday 22:32

My dad had a gorgeous dark green Rover with lovely leather seats. I loved that car. There was also a cute ford Anglia at one point with little triangle windows in the back. I adored my mark 1 Escort which I got in 1982.

AwksBut · Yesterday 22:34

Oh, the memories

Late 1960s my grandad had an Isetta, a bubble car, as he only had a motorbike licence

Early 70s, my uncle had a Morris Traveller that I thought was so cool with wood panelling.

Almost mid 70s my dad drove a purple Triumph Stag convertible with an 8 track casette which only ever seemed to play Liza Minnelli

Very late 80s ? My mum bought herself the ultimate boy racer car, a Fiesta RS Turbo (why, it was so embarrassing)

😮 There is nothing wrong with a fast Ford. They are iconic cars.

First one I remember was a black Hillman. Then a Hillman Minx. Probably 1959 or 1960 model. We had that one for quite a long time. it was the car of my childhood. It had a bench seat at the front, so you could get at least two children in the front when ferrying half a dozen home from a party.

After that we had several different Cortinas - company cars.

This was our Hillman Minx, or very like it. It was these colours.

Parents had a mini, a Renault 10, renault 4, several Volvo 244 and 240. Grandfather had a Hillman Hunter, uncle had a Ford Anglia. I shared lifts to secondary school with a girl whose dad always had the most luxurious Jaguars.

SowWhatNow · Yesterday 22:40

For some reason I remember the license plates for my parents old cars from the 90s! A burgundy red Ford Granada, a bright blue Ford Escort. Many a journey taken in them, may the rest in old banger peace

Omg !! Memory lane. My mum had a bright yellow Datsun 120. Its number plate was VPN153S from memory!! Grandad had a capri and would let me sit on his lap and change the gears. Which sounds wrong now but I was
normal in 1970/1980’s

I would race you down to the seaside in our Anglia.

ExOptimist · Yesterday 22:47

Ford Anglias were also the original police patrol cars.
