Mine's a good old lemon drizzle!
Shop bought is way too sweet.

Marbled chocolate ring. The one I make has ground almonds in the mix.

Orange-glazed walnut cake is another good one.

BeaLola · 03/06/2026 20:01

Leon drizzle
coffee & walnut
Victoria sponge with blackcurrant jam

I’ve never really met a homemade cake I didn’t like.

coffee and or fruit cake

macshoto · 03/06/2026 20:03

Proper fruit cake, made to a Christmas cake recipe, full of figs, dates, prunes and other fruit, but no glacé cherries (!) and lots of nuts. Not cheap to make, but keeps well and a lot cheaper than buying one.

BoarBrush · 03/06/2026 20:03

Carrot cake 100%, it's heaven not having nuts tarnishing a yummy cake.

B0D · 03/06/2026 20:12

My auntie’s banana cake was good. Takes me back 50 years!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 03/06/2026 20:14

Sticky toffee pudding, with a lot of extra sauce!

If you're wanting more of a normal cake that you can eat with your hands, then spice cake or a Victoria sponge.

tripleginandtonic · 03/06/2026 20:15

Victoria sponge

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/06/2026 20:19

A Victoria sponge, with blackcurrant jam inside - very slightly tart to counteract all the sugar.

Or a really lemony lemon drizzle.

I have, but it's not the type of cake that would be the problem, more the execution. My Mum's church used to have cake sales and one baker always contributed All Bran tea loaves. It was difficult to work up much enthusiasm for them based on the name, and they didn't taste any better than I expected. A bit dry and worthy, nothing like enough spice.

Pistachio and raspberry
Lemon, blueberry and almond

My lemon drizzle cake is fantastic - I add just a bit of bergamot in it, it gives a lot of depth to the citrus repertoire.

I love doing crepe layered cake, they take ages to make, it's a proper project. I'm going to do a matcha mousse one soon.

Where do you get bergamot from? Sounds delish

LoserWinner · 03/06/2026 20:40

Parkin. I make it once each year, for bonfire night.

hello @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g ! I have been fortunate enough not to have been subjected to the abomination that sounds. That would never get a rosette at the Flower and Produce Show would it?

I don’t eat a lot of cakes, but I enjoy baking. I’m often asked for recipes for my cakes. My family’s current faves are:
-almond and citrus cake
-cinnamon cake
-carrot and pineapple cake
-tiramisu
-monkey bread
-apple crumble pie
-banana choc bread
-nougat glacé
-pistachio Yule log (according to DD I ought to make it year-round 😂)

Personally I’m quite partial to a really nice fruit salad, like fraises au poivre doused with Pastis, or mango and raspberries with basil.

The best thing I’ve ever done in the kitchen was to get a free app recipe. It has upped my game massively and allowed me to develop my own recipes. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys cooking/baking.
