Mine's a good old lemon drizzle!
Shop bought is way too sweet.

Victoria sponge or lemon drizz. Yes drizz. Yum.

worcesterpear · 03/06/2026 22:45

The nicest I have eaten is a lemon drizzle baked by a customer. The best I can make myself is probably coffee and walnut. I always like the idea of carrot cake but never had that much success with them and I've tried quite a few different recipes now.

Carrot cake is the best.
my friend works in a local independent cafe. This week she has made chocolate and orange scones and cherry and almond muffins. Delicious 🤤

Caraway Seed Cake is my most fav. You don’t get many people making it now.

Where do you get bergamot from? Sounds delish

Lidl, actually - When it's Greek week, sometimes they have jars of bergamot peel in syrup.

Mary Berry’s gingerbread tray bake is a favourite. I also have a lovely recipe for apricot and almond cake.

We make it. My favourite cake too.

Lavender and Lime, Raspberry and White Chocolate or Coffee and Walnut, love them equally. Not a fan of Chocolate particularly.

I'm a cake maker and have a very large flavour menu for my customers 😋

mondaytosunday · 03/06/2026 23:26

My DD makes an amazing carrot cake. OMG you could dive head first into it and think you’d gone to heaven.

Tonissister · 03/06/2026 23:27

Coffee and walnut. My own recipe, which has WAY more coffee and way more walnuts in than any shop bought version.

MinnieMountain · 04/06/2026 05:41

Cherry and almond.

Mary Berry's strawberry dessert cake.

Vanilla sponge with strawberry buttercream made with fresh strawberries. The buttercream is AMAZING!!!!! Sometimes a layer of strawberry jam too!

OccasionalHope · 04/06/2026 06:00

Classic Victoria sandwich with lots of jam and caster sugar on top but pref not buttercream at all

OccasionalHope · 04/06/2026 06:01

The jam in the middle obv, not in top ;)

hello @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g ! I have been fortunate enough not to have been subjected to the abomination that sounds. That would never get a rosette at the Flower and Produce Show would it?

Indeed not! I'd have liked to hear Peggy or Jill on the subject when they were in their prime. Archers

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 04/06/2026 07:30

Goodness hard to choose! I rarely bake - not sure why cos I love cake! Would probably have to say lemon drizzle. Anything lemony & I’m right there. Might make one this weekend.

cantquiteknityet · 04/06/2026 07:41

Mary Berry’s Hummingbird!
(banana and pineapple with a cream cheese frosting)

might have to make one for the weekend

susiedaisy1912 · 04/06/2026 07:45

Banana bread

ChippySauce · 04/06/2026 07:48

Well now I want cake for breakfast 😄

I'd love try a the caraway seed cake if anyone has a foolproof recipe please?

@MarmaladeSandwich7 that's why homemade is the best, shop bought are just sweet, never lemony or tart enough!

Jill is still turning out the odd lemon drizzle when Leonard isn’t pushing her out even if we never hear from her.

(I don’t know how to do the Bull Emoji any more!)

I used to read about seed cake in very old novels and children's stories but I'm not sure I've ever had it. I like the taste of caraway so maybe I should give it a go.

CheeseyOnionPie · 04/06/2026 08:39

Jam and coconut sponge

What is school cake?

Something like this. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/school-days-sprinkle-sponge School dinner staple before the current emphasis on reducing sugar. Way back in the 70s we had squares of sponge but I don't think we had icing with it. Pink or chocolate or ordinary custard, I think.

Fancy a trip down memory lane? This classic school cake with rainbow sprinkles will do the trick. Serve as an afternoon treat, or for dessert with custard
