I know a migraine is coming because I start yawning uncontrollably the day before. And I do mean uncontrollably - like hiccups, but yawning.

Yes it’s non-stop isn’t it…like one finishes and another one follows very swiftly behind.

The biggest tell tale sign before the visual disturbance , headache and intense neck and shoulder pain for me is excessive thirst. no matter how much I drink my body just wants more. Also dry mouth despite drinking loads and excessive yawning.

post migraine I'm exhausted. ait knocks me out for days afterwards. I get horrendous stomach upset and cramping too.

I get what I now know is called Alice in Wonderland. I also get the weird zigzag thing in one eye and a feeling of being mildly hungover.

I don't get so many now where I would have an awful, sicky headache (maybe they were hormonal?) But now occasionally get a silent migraine, always starts right hand corner of eye, zig zag/broken glass moving around, gradually becoming worse, if I look at the TV part of the picture will be missing. Then after a few minutes it will pass and I feel fine.

Don’t get them much but aura. And vomiting.

Roulett · Yesterday 21:29

I get visual disturbances, numb arm, tingling mouth, sometimes jumbled up speech. Hate them!

Mine are:
chronic migraine diagnosis:
Blurred vision, unable to read clearly.( most common, most days)
Occasionally jagged silver lines, rather like a bad 1970s sci-fi special effect.
Nausea ( common)
Stomach upset
Lack of concentration (far too common)
Brain fog ( far too common)
Dull headache
Funny taste to food, metallic
Speech deterioration

The smell of cigarette smoke so powerful it burns the insides of my nostrils.

Namethatbauble · Yesterday 22:26

At the very worst I’ve had about an hour of an aura followed by total vision loss in one eye replaced by a white covering. Total numbness in hands, face and arms. Then the usual extreme headache, nausea until I’m uncontrollably vomiting for about two hours and then total exhaustion. Such joyful experiences and fortunately rare for me now.

Thankfully, I very rarely get headaches or migraines, but have had the following:

Ocular migraine. I get a zig zag, warped image and flashing from 1 eye. It makes me slightly dizzy and nauseous. Thank fully it usually lasts less than 15mins, but then I often get a headache for an hour.

I started a diary to see if it was linked to my menstrual cycle, wearing contact lenses, foods, sleep etc and the only thing linked was a stressful job. I used to get them about every 2mths, but I've since left that job- I've only had one in about 7yrs!

Vestibular migraine- I only had this one twice, when I was having dental work done. I think I was grinding my teeth at night in bed, which then somehow caused the symptoms.

I'd wake and rolling over in bed felt dizzy and like I was going to be sick. I had to hold the walls when walking, because it felt like I was on a ship and everything was spinning. I was sick several times and lying down and sleeping was the only thing that helped- slightly. Strangely, I'd see say a slipper on the floor but my brain would tell me it was moving! It was a bit freaky thinking the rug, the chair, the lamp etc were moving about. It took over a week each time to recover fully, with each day getting slightly better. Once my permanent crown was fitted on my tooth- I've never had it since.

My husband had a vestibular migraine that turned out to be vestibular neuritis. So he’s had those same rocking, nauseous, eyes playing tricks on his symptoms for 7 months and counting now. Horrific.

Tinnitus, word finding difficulties and feeling like I'm not making sense although most people say they don't notice!

Tonissister · Yesterday 22:30

The weirdest I have had is olfactory hallucinations - imagining smells that aren't there.

Also get a semi circle of geographical moving patterns, like a sort of black and white kaleidoscope.

FrostyMorn · Yesterday 22:30

After my last one, once the headache finally cleared, I had excruciating leg pain for around 3 days. I've since read that this can form part of a 'migraine hangover' and is more common if you had limb pain, like cramp, as a child - which i did.

Additup · Yesterday 22:33

A few years ago I listened to an interview with a dr who had spent years studying migraines. He said once the pain starts you've already had the migraine start hours before but may not realise hence the food cravings.

He said some things that were historically put down to causing migraines were insteas actually cravings caused by the migraine starting eg dark chocolate, salty snacks, certain cheese.

It was really interesting. I used to get premenstrual migraines that seemed to be triggered by pregnancy but the good news is they are no more post menopause 🥳

FatEndoftheWedge · Yesterday 22:35

Yes to smells the last time I had one it was a smoker who nearly made me puke.

Weird runny nose but one side and blocked in eye and ear .

Intense excruciating neck and shoulder pain ,pain all down one side. .no aura.

LateMumma · Yesterday 22:40

Vision loss in my lower left eye, it’s really weird, like the light and colour is there but no detail. The day after I get vertigo so badly that I can barely walk.

Fallulah · Yesterday 22:41

I’ve only had migraines recently - after eye scans my GP said they are probably hormonal as I’m mid forties.

Temperature issues - hot tops of arms and cheeks.
Feeling like things/people are moving when they’re not.
Headache
Low mood and crying to the point where it’s actually laughable that I have no idea why I’m crying, but I can’t stop.

BrokeGnome · Yesterday 22:50

I've got one now: tinnitus; a feeling as if one side of the body is more numb than the other; pain; low, low mood; exhaustion...and that's today.
I can recognise a lot of my symptoms in other people's posts here but can't get it together enough to remember them to write them down. Word finding is an issue.

Uglypugly · Yesterday 22:55

This is a really interesting thread...feels like I've found my people!!

I relate to many mentioned such as the excessive yawning, digestion stopping (I notice I lose all appetite and if I eat it sits on my stomach), neck pain on one side, hotter internally and skin temp, light and smell sensitivity, weeing frequently, tired, struggling to concentrate, difficulty thinking of words/finishing sentences.

Also I've noticed one of my tells is not an obvious visual disturbance but a slight sensation that things are off so I constantly reposition my glasses and clean them. I seem to absentmindedly do that for a few hours before I realise 'here we go again'

I've now noticed more of a pattern such as the excessive weeing is quite an early sign, the yawning and lack of hunger a mid sign and the glasses means game over as the neck pain is on the way then full blown migraine hits

Interesting to see sweet cravings as this definitely happens to me so I'll now pay attention to timing.

The migraine buddy app is good for tracking symptoms, duration, relief

retiredhorse · Yesterday 23:18

Like many people, yawning. But also burping… sure sign one is coming (and my stomach is also impacted and I think it starts slowing down). I take donperidone and triptans which help enormously.

Finchgold · Today 00:00

I can smell my migraines coming and I get the extreme yawning as well as my hair follicles hurting. Before it gets too bad I crave salty food and the pain disappears while I eat and is back the moment I stop so I end up nibbling hula hoops trying to stave it off. My whole family suffer and looks like my son is going that way too.

Simonjt · Today 00:05

I get the common ones, so a numbish left side, visual disturbance etc. But my first symptom is always eyes that feel dry and like my eyelids are dragging when I blink, when at the same time my eyes won’t be dry at all, so in reality that sensation isn’t happening, but my brain has made it up.
