What’s the strangest reason someone has got cross with you on MN?

ClassicStripe · 29/05/2026 07:12

When I was new to MN I used a way of phrasing something that is very common in my local dialect. To the point that I still can’t figure out what was wrong with how I phrased it. However rather than answering my thread there was just a pile on about my typing.

Another time someone became very angry that I said I worked at a school with a farm. I did at the time. But they were so angry that I might have “outed” my self. I’ve never put anything on here that I would be embarrassed people in my life finding out so I don’t know why they were so worried for me!

When I said the success many people have losing weight with mounjaro etc proves that the basic ‘calories in, calories out’ logic works. Take a drug that reduces your appetite = weight loss.

But apparently I don’t understand and got told repeatedly that obesity is much more complicated that this. Yes, the reasons people overeat are complicated and multifaceted, but the basic logic of eating too many calories and putting on weight still holds true.

I was told off for sitting on a priority seat on the bus. I had a broken shoulder and couldn't stand safely without risking further injury. I was even told it couldn't have been that bad as a&e put it in plaster which was removed a week later by the fracture clinic and a collar and cuff put on..... apparently if it was bad it would have been in plaster for several weeks. Casts are not usually a recommended treatment plan for the type and site of fracture. But she knew better than orthopedic surgeons!

I wasn't disabled so shouldn't have sat there, even though it wasn't a disabled seat it was a priority seat for those less able to stand (so pregnant women, those with injuries etc.) There was an old lady there but she got given a seat by another lady sitting next to me. Fortunately plenty of people agreed I was fine sitting there

Edited

Omg what arseholes! Ridiculous as well.

I broke my shoulder and it was absolutely horrific. They couldn't put any plaster so it was just in this crappy ill fitting sling. I broke my hip at the same time and needed extensive surgery but the shoulder was worse! It felt like my elbow and wrist were also broken and it was my dominant too.

Took about 12 weeks to fully heal. Still can't lift my arm up properly 4 years later!

Anyone who thinks you are not extremely vulnerable and only semi mobile with a broken shoulder has never fucking had one!

@ClashCityRocker I think I remember your thread. So bizarre.

I've had a few. I made some comment on a long thread about something good DH does off the back of someone whose Dh was a plonkler. And I got attacked by someone who told me that first I say my husband is a wanker and now I'm singing his praises, which is it? I couldn't work out what was going on. It turne dout, she was referring to an old thread (like a year or more old) that I'd started about something DH had done (and he'd subsequently apologised). I started name changing after that as I still don't know if she was stalking me, or if she was obsessively back searching every poster.

My funniest one was the abuse I took from one poster - I think over 3 or 4 posts - because I mentioned I sometimes give DS salami in his sandwiches for his packed lunch. Apparently he's now doomed and will die of cancer young. I could practically see her frothing at the mouth through her keyboard!

I saw a canadian you tuber with parents from two different island locations neither near India who have very different curry dishes and going through 200 years of evolving dishes round the world where it's been adopted and adapated by many cultures. That was triggered by US citizens being very unaware of curry being anything but Indian and shouting about cultural appropriation.

I got told off by one that was later clearly US based poster about using geographical designation term British Isles - to clearer refer to the archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of continental Europe which consists of over 6,000 islands, including Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Hebrides, and the Orkney, Shetland, and Fair Isle. Apparently it was an offensive term and I was denying the existance of the country of Republic Ireland - I apologized and tried to explain but wasn't enough.

Since found terms The Atlantic Archipelago, The Anglo-Celtic Isles and these Islands can be used instead but I had to go and look that up myself.

Hmm, I wonder if that US poster also angrily corrects anybody using 'America' when they're only referring to a single one out of nearly three dozen countries in America?

Lifeomars · 29/05/2026 12:25

I said a drank about 3 glasses of wine a week and had a comment telling me I was ruining my physical and mental health.

littleorangefox · 29/05/2026 12:33

I was told I was incredibly lazy for a SAHM because I expected my husband to do 50/50 housework and parenting when he wasn't at work and that during the day I wasn't doing loads of housework except basic cleaning and tidying as I went. I had 3 children under 6 who weren't in childcare and I was also heavily pregnant 😂

Reader: he was Scottish.

I'm Scottish and I've been called worse 😂 Wtf were you meant to call him?

Do they genuinely think that you could have a deadly fence stretching for miles right in the open, where anybody could walk past?

Surely the idea is that a low voltage gives a little buzz to the animals to discourage them from trying to escape; it isn't designed to barbecue them on the spot!!

From what I remember the shock was a little more than a slight buzz. I laughed at the stupidity of the teacher, as was mentioned in the post. But that was apparently not something that was amusing 😁

BashfulClam · 29/05/2026 12:36

I moaned about my neighbour putting rubbish on top of my bin on bin day so it might have stopped the bin men collecting it. (Her house must have been like Steptoe’s yard the amount of stuff she was always chucking away). I said both had vehicles and their sons who do manual jobs (joiner and carpet fitter) were always visiting so surely someone could have gone to the tip 5 minutes away as they all seemed able bodied enough…well that lit a fire under one user who kept saying what did I know, invisible disabilities etc etc. I said they drive, work and go to the gym regularly and both sons (who visit at least 3 days a week) do manual jobs but she wouldn’t stop ffs it was relentless. I eventually had to ignore her…all that over a petty gripe post. Yes I accept invisible disabilities exist but at the same time they were able enough to take their shit to the tip! I watched her fly tip stuff into a builders skip across the road!

Friendlygingercat · 29/05/2026 12:38

People like me who are child free typically get told that "my child will end up wiping your bum" when we dare to complain that we get none of the financial subs and handouts that parents get. Yet its our tax money which finances them. I pointed out that this is a dumb thing to say because no one can predict what any one child will amount to when they reach adulthood. Even less that any particular child will perform services for any particular adult. Several posters got their knickers in a right twist because I had remarked how predictable and inane such remarks were.

BauhausOfEliott · 29/05/2026 12:38

One (male) poster got very, very irate with me because I met my partner at work and slept with him while we were still working together. No amount of explaining to him that my DP and I have now been together for 23 years, so it all worked out well, could convince him that we hadn't done something incredibly stupid or that my DP wasn't going to be accused of sexually harassing and assaulting me.

The same poster still pops up from time to time on here with increasingly weird, rigid and incel-adjacent views about women, sex and relationships.

Another poster got really angry with me because I mostly wear black clothes, including during summer. She said it was unfair of me, because if other people wear black it made her feel miserable. She also suggested that I must be mentally ill or disturbed in some way if I prefer black to bright colours.

I don't think I was the disturbed one in the conversation, tbh.

Mammut · 29/05/2026 12:43

I got many angry comments for saying Queen Elizabeth the first was never queen of Scotland. Nit picking apparently.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 29/05/2026 12:44

I was once attacked by some mad poster after I made a really innocuous, unimportant comment on a topic that isn't traditionally a controversial one. It was something like the equivalent of me saying that I really don't like custard creams, but not in the least criticising those who do like them.

She took huge offence and advance-searched me since I first joined MN, to look for any 'dirt' on me. The worst she could find was me talking about (e.g. the equivalent of) particularly liking certain Easter eggs and looking forward to them appearing in the shops each year, and apparently that was proof positive of me exposing myself as being a big fat liar - because I'd already said that I didn't like custard creams, but now I was contradicting myself by claiming that I did like some kinds of chocolate!!

I regularly name-change now, because of people like her - and others who cannot accept that different people have different views on some topics and seek to 'shame' and bully them away from 'their' forum, where they only want people who agree with them.

Honestly, I don't know if it's just pure, unbridled nastiness or if a lot of them are actually seriously mentally unwell.

I got called racist at work by referring to a gentleman from Africa as African. There was a guy who if you mentioned any nationality of ethnicity he would say you were racist. All you had to say was ‘oh X yes he’s from India!’ And he be like ‘that’s so fucking racist!’ Erm no it’s factual.

LimbOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheHoleTheHoleInTheGround · 29/05/2026 12:48

I once posted that I felt the Beatles were over rated and got called thick and uneducated, as well as other names, the poster followed me onto other threads to berate me as well.

I think it was probably Paul McCartney.

ACR7 · 29/05/2026 12:49

Posted what my husbands salary was as a police officer and was told I was a liar despite the salaries of every rank of police officer being clearly stated in the public domain.

anothernewname6789998212 · 29/05/2026 12:49

Not to me but the weirdest one i’ve seen was someone commenting on a thread about stingy friends. Someone commented their own example: A friend who adds up what they’ve had on a restaurant bill, and will suggest going halves when it means she gets to pay for less than she’s had, but then when it’s the other way around will insist she’s only paying for her own rather than foot a couple of quid extra. Commenter clarified that friend has a well paid job and no children so financial issues were not a factor.

Someone replied saying that the commenter is the stingy one and should pay for her friends entire lunch once in a while as a thank you to the friend for her tax contributions because she hasn’t ever used a publicly funded maternity leave or school place due to having no kids.

Ah yeah I've witnessed similar to this! It's so odd.

I posted on here that I was planning a homebirth - I got completely piled on and labelled a baby killer. It was MENTAL.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 29/05/2026 12:52

I got told off for going to Tesco mid week during lockdown as bread and milk (which is what I went to get) are not 'staple items'.

I had one woman who had a go at me on a 'do you wear underwear underneath your pyjamas' thread because I said I didn't. She started ranting saying 'what about discharge!' at me.

I've had that happen to me. I posted on a baby name thread and pointed out that the name they suggested has a nickname / shorter version which might be used to bully the kid. She name changed and then started following me on other threads I had commented on calling me stupid etc.

Error404FucksNotFound · 29/05/2026 12:55

There are two hilarious ones.

I said I think the beetles are overrated..

I said I could see both sides of the argument. (I cant even remember what the argument was now). Not being firmly one side or the other made the poster very cross. It was so funny.

Someone got immensely annoyed at me on a Christmas thread because I said I thought bread sauce was rank. Like took it to the heart like a knife like I was personally insulting her bread sauce. Kept telling me I was wrong and her bread sauce was delicious.

You are not being unreasonable - it’s vile stuff 😀
