Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

OP posts:

I also encountered people who look ok but absolutely reek of piss. Both male and female. They clearly were not old, disabled or homeless - but the smell was unmistakable.

I know I can’t get away with showering in the evening and not in the morning. I get up early to go to the gym and shower before I go and when I get home. Many people don’t bother and they really stink when they come into ten gym. Sometimes it’s so bad I have to move away.

I know some people have hormonal issues but many are just lazy.

Somersetbaker · 30/05/2026 20:17

I have a bath once a year, whether I need it or not!

FranGelo · 30/05/2026 20:17

Polyester, acrylic and nylon clothing don't help. Clothes made from these fabrics only accelerate the problem particularly in hot weather.

Goldengamer · 30/05/2026 20:18

I work in a supermarket doing promotional work . I’ve thought exactly the same , some of the people walking past me have literally turned my stomach . I’ve also noticed different cultures seem to be worse, I’m not going in to that one in case I get the racist card pulled which I’m def not. It maybe isn’t a done thing in their country to wear deodorant . Then you get those that just don’t wash , we actually have one in the store and the boss sends him home to shower if he catches him stinking and he has to owe the time he takes . He’s a slob who games all night and just lives in his bedroom . He puts dirty clothes on and I’ve had to go out of the staff canteen when he’s walked in the smell is so bad, he’s now been promoted to collecting the trollies, that’s an extreme example though .But yes generally the great unwashed seem to be everywhere !

queenofkale · 30/05/2026 20:25

Oh gosh it’s awful isn’t it - someone I know smells horrific and I was shocked when I sat next to them recently at 9am and it was horrific then. More than one time someone has asked if someone else has stepped in dog poo - which knowing what the smell is made me cringe so much. I do think it’s worse when the person is incredibly overweight. It must make it harder to clean yourself.

LadyRoughDiamond · 30/05/2026 20:27

Having recently had to sit next to a man who stank of stale alcohol and sweat for 2.5 hours on a morning flight, I wholeheartedly agree OP. It was an experience I hope I never have to repeat.

There's no excuse. I shower every morning and most evenings in summer.

There ARE reasons not excuses, why some people smell despite trying their best not to, try reading other people's posts.

im lucky that Dove original (dark blue lid) works for me. If I ever forget to apply it after a shower I smell later in the day. None of the other ones in their range work for me. I live in fear they stop making it.

igelkott2026 · 26/05/2026 19:04

That is a massive waste of water. Although if I am in a hotel with a lovely shower, I do waste their water and have two showers a day..

It's not 'their' water. It's 'our' water. It's a waste or not , whichever shower it comes out of.

A lot of people are disgusting OP. They don't wash. They don't wash their clothes. They don't use deodorant and they don't care.

Yes this.

With some people it can be hormonal, I have a friend who can literally be 5 minutes out of the shower and is already starting to smell. Friend is very self conscious and has tried all sorts, including through GP, but with limited effect, it’s particularly bad/ strong at certain times of the month. It is somewhat unpleasant but I know she can’t help it so don’t judge her for it or let it out me off being around her.

Agree with this. 👈

FYI as a rule of thumb, people who say ‘race card’ are usually those who have racist tendencies!

Because some people genuinely believe it’s acceptable to go several days without cleaning themselves.

They’ll be on this thread shortly arguing about how it’s totally fine to only shower twice a week.

And you'll be lurking until then..

Horrible post. So reality-blind and judgemental.

Really horrible.

Has she tried fussy?

Just wondering cos it's not deodorant as such...

I am a smelly person. I shower every morning, scrub my pits with dettol soap, scrub my pits with apple cider vinegar and then use the strongest deodorant and perfume. By 10am I still stink. It has been a problem all my life.

Me too. Does it get worse at certain times of the month?

Fresh sweat does smell when exposed to the air

Fresh sweat when exposed to the air does start to smell. That's the whole problem.

Wow, really? Well not me . I’m bog standard white, my best friend is Nigerian, neighbours are Bangladeshi and invited me to their wedding, daughter is married to a Malaysian guy and I have friends from all over the world . I also enjoy travelling and embracing culture ….. so I’m not included in that rule of thumb, not in the slightest

There will be many reasons people can’t shower as often as you do! Chronic illness, disability, financial constraints! I’ve had chronic eczema flares so bad that I’ve had to dose myself up on codeine and ibuprofen to be able to get into the shower as even plain water felt like knives on my skin! The underarm eczema flare from antiperspirant was a delight!! And the reaction from insect bites on the backs of my thighs! I struggled to sit down for several weeks let alone shower daily!!

Completely agree! The posts saying there’s no excuse! My god there’s loads of reasons people don’t/ can’t shower daily!

Though main reason is the laziness or just lack of understanding this is a done thing.

Some men have a real BO problem and no matter whether they showed or not, after a few hours in a hot sweaty environment. This seems almost to be a medical condition because they are diligent about cleanliness.
Obviously most strenuous manual jobs result in sweaty bodies and clothes, but such people might not small.
Obviously personal hygiene is very important, but this does not necessarily mean that you have to shower in the morning. I believe that in most cases the smell is produced by the flora and fauna living on your skin.
If your hygiene regime results in very few of these, you may not need to shower frequently. After all it is a scientific fact that showering every day is bad for your skin.
It is interesting that I have worked in several industries doing very different jobs. I regret to admit that blokes doing office jobs in London were the worst by far.
It is unfair and incorrect to assume that men should, or indeed need to, shower each morning. The situation is far more complex.
After all I don't feel the need to shower every day and I don't smell! Or do I ???

Jesusisking7 · 30/05/2026 21:16

Exactly, if we judge, one day it would happen to us

I think under no circumstances smelling of piss, BO or shit in a public place should be normalised.

But how do you know it’s laziness??
During my eczema flares they were on hidden parts of my body so no one would have known that I was unable to use antiperspirant/ struggled to wash due to underarm eczema!!
