Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Colombian nose candy and alcohol. Your BO is worse if you are dehydrated. Also diet can play a big part.

I've smelled so many stinky people on buses - usually old men reeking of pee - that if I've been a bus (or train) I change my trousers or leggings before sitting anywhere in the house when I get home.

I also think a lot of people wash clothes too quickly and at low temperatures so they're never fully removing the stale odour of sweat. And polyester based clothing. I've never done a quick wash - always the 2 hour cycle at 40c minimum and with a generous amount of washing liquid.

Wow I’m the exact same. I’m not a germaphobe but I’m quite particular when it comes to laundry because let’s face it, our clothes have been everywhere we’ve been and touched more stuff such as public seats etc. I either use a combination of white vinegar and fabric softener, or fabric softener and dettol antibacterial laundry cleanser in the fabric softener drawer for my clothes and same cycle you mentioned.

Scarba · 30/05/2026 18:46

We are a shower daily family. My clothes tend to be cotton or linen. The linen stuff says to wash at 30C. I didn’t know you were meant to wash polyester at 60C? But my husband soaks his polyester sports stuff in vinegar first which helps.

I guess none of us really knows how we smell to others. Even the clean ones!

We are given messages to save the environment and use low temps. Maybe that makes a difference.

I think they don't notice/don't smell themselves! But a lot of people don't have good hygiene.

TBH I grew up without good hygiene being modelled, and it took me a while to understand that even if I could not smell myself in the morning, if you sweat onto dried-on sweat and dead skin, that is likely to smell. If you have fresh sweat on clean skin, it doesn't usually smell (at least, not as strongly). Sometimes I used to feel like it was pointless washing if I was going to get sweaty again, but the fresh sweat/clean skin combo is much better than sweating onto dirty skin, which will smell.

But I do also think that people have differently smelling sweat. My tops get a build up which doesn't even smell of sweat particularly, I don't know how to describe the smell, it's sort of like the stale carpet smell of communal hallways. This does not get washed away in the washing machine unless I wash my tops at 60C, so I save them up and do them in a batch with some towels every 3-4 washes so they don't get destroyed by washing at 60 every time.

However I don't have to do this for DH's tops or teenage DS's even though their BO is much stronger than mine. The washing machine removes their armpit smell perfectly fine. It's annoying TBH.

I also find that unless I wash under my arms with salycylic acid (found in a lot of face washes) the old sweat doesn't seem to get removed properly. I can get out of the shower after having washed and I am still smelly.

Regarding the washing, I work in a job where I wear white shirts that can discolour and get build up in the underarms. I now soak my shirts every other wash in soda crystals before putting them into the washing machine (sometimes for a few hours sometimes overnight) it works really well at getting rid of the build up

Felicks · 30/05/2026 18:58

I find it pretty disgusting too.
I do wonder, though, with so many people house sharing, its easy to bypass the bathroom in the morning, especially for men.

Jesusisking7 · 30/05/2026 18:59

I think we need to be mindful as we dont know if someone has a health condition. Its quick to judge someone and assume and its also hard to know if these people dont want to spray or have showers.

i think if someone has a smell, unless you can say in a calm respective manner, no harm in telling them as you could be doing that person a favour. Its like have a wedgie or period blood is leaked, us woman or men should say as they may not be aware or if they dont care, then thats your answer.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 25/05/2026 12:16

Its always handy and convenient when the person loudly announces their plans in front of you so you have the full information for judgement.

Some reasons:
Laziness
Depression
Poverty
Disability
Lack of resources
On way home to shower after work/activity/event

It was 2 mins out of your life, you dont have to live or deal with it, let alone make an MN post about it.

I know some people who smell badly and they are not someone on your list. In fact, they are well off people who are of a hippy/ clean living disposition and dont use conventional deodorants. They reek. But they are not putting "awful chemicals" on themselves.

To add: I once decided to buy Bionsen deodorant instead of my normal Sure - on the account of it being better for you. I reeked so bad by the end of the day I could not stand it myself.

localnotail · 30/05/2026 19:08

A lot of people also smell musty so I assume dirty clothes, before BO even kicks in

Flomingho · 30/05/2026 19:15

It's disgusting, lazy and shows a complete lack of self respect or respect to anyone else. No excuses.

SpeakTruther · 30/05/2026 19:23

I completely get your frustration because you see people dressed nicely so you know they’re not homeless etc and they still smell awful and have that wet dog smell, it’s as if they don’t shower in weeks, it’s either that or they don’t wash enough down there. The hygiene of people in UK is horrendous. They need to make the using of bidets normal here.

Lampzade · 30/05/2026 19:24

Totally agree Op
i have been on buses and trains over the past few days and the nasty smell of BO has made me gag
it is disgusting

Otterlylovely85 · 30/05/2026 19:26

My ex was a professional senior manager and never cleaned his coat or ties. He also had his suit cleaned about every 3 months. He rarely bathed and smoked! When we separated I told him he stunk like my most vulnerable clients (charity worker in a big city with a lot of homeless people). There is no excuse at that level, he was just grim

Tiddlywinkly · 30/05/2026 19:34

My manager stinks. It's taken me ages to work out what it's from - dog. In this case, a Labrador.

I stress, this is not tarnishing all dog owners by any means. In his specific case, I don't know if it's a lack of dog cleanliness, specific bread etc, but it's really unpleasant and I'm not the only one to notice. I shared a small office with him a few years ago pre-dog. It's definitely the dog.

Lampzade · 30/05/2026 19:39

Btw if you don’t shower or give yourself a thorough strip wash you probably stink .

BeOchreReader · 30/05/2026 19:40

My ex used to just soak in the bath of just water for 2 hours, no soap and no shampoo, not washing your hair for a while made it clean itself apparently. it was horrendous, especially in the summer months. I used to buy all sorts of things, hints etc, no change.

Berylium · 30/05/2026 19:40

But it's not as bad as in the middle ages when human smells were tolerated and perhaps even had a pheromonal effect. The human body must produce these smells for a reason. Far worse in my opinion are laundry smells with lavender perfume as the worst offender. It makes the wearing of perfume totally irrelevant,

Melisand · 30/05/2026 19:41

DontKillSteve · 25/05/2026 15:08

The Eastern European labourers on the tube every morning mostly stink- of unwashed crotch and fag breath. They are definitely not washing regularly. Probably weekly yo build up that level of stink. There is a spectrum of unwashed on public transport. Also a lot of garlic breath. People who washed before a night shift really do not smell too bad. Homeless / leg ulcers is the worse smell. People generally are not washing enough though. There is an awful lot of hair that could be washed more.

Horrible post. So reality-blind and judgemental.

TheWorthyNewt · 30/05/2026 19:42

It's revolting! And I can imagine some people don't wash but use those all over deodorants now as well. When I see those ads I honestly get the dry heave! I also get the dry heave when I smell people with BO 🤮

LumenLights · 30/05/2026 19:46

In recent years I have noticed a marked increase in people with BO while out in public.

But there’s a lot less garlic breath on a Monday morning commute since the pandemic!

Evilkineavel · 30/05/2026 19:47

If this is all I had to be cross about to the point I made a post about it i would be pure giggling! My god! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyways.. Some people are struggling mentally, hygiene is the least of their worries. Some are serious sweaters especially hormonal fluctuations, pre menopause, menopause, pregnancy and many of other reasons and some just don't care. Deodorant will only do so much. Seriously why let that bother you this much, I don't understand 😂

TipsyPeachSnake · 30/05/2026 19:55

I shower daily but remember as a kid (before showers) Sunday night was bath night. Same for a lot of other families. We must have stank through the week but honestly don’t recall any bad smells!

Diorling · 30/05/2026 20:02

it may not be due to lack of money or time. Modern soap can be an issue. The supermarket type soaps I grew up with have all changed their contents - eg Pears isn’t what it was, and some (advertised as Beauty bars) aren’t even soap . They are not what they were. Nor do the ‘soak in bath’ stuff and the shower gels necessarily do what we think. In fact their ingredients can actually do us harm. There’s quite a lot about this online. I found this out the hard way. I’ve had to switch to one of the few good old fashioned soaps left, and that’s solved the problem.
As far as laundry is concerned I run holiday accommodation and we have commercial bedding. It costs a fortune to buy in the first place but we can boil wash it regularly - at least at 60 degrees and I boil wash them very regularly. It’s only a very hot wash that guarantees to get them properly clean.
In this super hot kind of weather, when folks are really understandably sticky, I strip the beds completely and wash everything every changeover time - including the pillows, pillow protectors, mattress protectors - two on every bed - one waterproof (though you can’t tell) and one soft and cushiony on top - even the duvets. It’s a lot of extra work (and cost) that no one notices but it’s so worth it to me. (I have enough bedding to ensure it’s all sparkling clean every time).

Sandytoesreflexes · 30/05/2026 20:11

You really are quite rude and obnoxious, how do you know you don’t smell
