Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Some men have a real BO problem and no matter whether they showed or not, after a few hours in a hot sweaty environment. This seems almost to be a medical condition because they are diligent about cleanliness.
Obviously most strenuous manual jobs result in sweaty bodies and clothes, but such people might not small.
Obviously personal hygiene is very important, but this does not necessarily mean that you have to shower in the morning. I believe that in most cases the smell is produced by the flora and fauna living on your skin.
If your hygiene regime results in very few of these, you may not need to shower frequently. After all it is a scientific fact that showering every day is bad for your skin.
It is interesting that I have worked in several industries doing very different jobs. I regret to admit that blokes doing office jobs in London were the worst by far.
It is unfair and incorrect to assume that men should, or indeed need to, shower each morning. The situation is far more complex.
After all I don't feel the need to shower every day and I don't smell! Or do I ???

You probably do, and I would bet the guys who stink are also shower dodgers/ wear same clothes for days/ dont use deodorant.

To be fair shift work exists… it’s not the morning for everyone

Oh gosh it’s awful isn’t it - someone I know smells horrific and I was shocked when I sat next to them recently at 9am and it was horrific then. More than one time someone has asked if someone else has stepped in dog poo - which knowing what the smell is made me cringe so much. I do think it’s worse when the person is incredibly overweight. It must make it harder to clean yourself.

I was much much bigger when I was younger and no, I didn't smell because I made the effort to wash/shower/bathe properly. One of the main reasons overweight people smell is pure laziness. I once had a friend who was tipping 30 stones. She admitted she couldn't be bothered to bathe or shower often, as it was "too much faff"! She relied on baby wipes, which combined with various body odours, smelt far worse. Who lives like that? She smelt absolutely awful most of the time in hot weather. The reason I found out about her lack of cleanliness was because I brought up the awful smell! Once she'd said that she couldn't be bothered, I could hardly keep mentioning it. Awkward!

Because some people genuinely believe it’s acceptable to go several days without cleaning themselves.

They’ll be on this thread shortly arguing about how it’s totally fine to only shower twice a week.

Twice a week? I'm lucky if I manage to get in the shower once a week. You see my brain wants to. But it just can't. Getting in the shower is one of the hardest things and I have no idea why. Maybe it's the adhd or the depression they say I have ot maybe it was geowing up in a carvan with no shower and just stripwashing daily with an outdoor bath once in a while. (this i do, the stripwash , not the outdoor bath) I can't explain it. I dont think I smell though. My husband says I dont and my kids say I dont and I could not honestly care less what anyone else in the entire world thinks because they aren't paying my bills or putting food on my table. I also rarely smell other people so op either has a sensitive nose or an obsession with germs.

Lots of this isn't even showering.
Many people proudly proclaim how they wash their clothes on cold wash and shortest cycle.......

Where I live lots of people wash in cold water - we are even encouraged to do so. I can assure you the majority of us don't smell.

I also don't encounter the hordes of smelly people others on MN seem to. One or two now and again, that's all.

My thoughts too! We all lead different lives. Not everyone is on your schedule.

I sadly misread the title of this thread as ‘smiley people first thing in the morning make me cross’ and I was so ready to agree with you! I love a morning grump!

Are you in Asia? Because Asians have different genes that stop BO compared to Euros

LooneyLiberalSpaceWaster · 30/05/2026 22:12

Genetics probably do play a role. I have middle Eastern heritage and don't feel the heat and very very rarely sweat. DH is the same. I still shower and use soap every day.....why wouldn't you, its nice.

Isn't it dried sweat left in clothes and on skin that breads bacteria, so yep, some people have that stinky combination of feeling hot and sweating but also being lazy.

I can understand people choosing food or heating over hot water if they are very poor, but a strip wash with hot water and a bar of soap isn't going to cost the earth.

Whosthetabbynow · 25/05/2026 12:55

People stink in all weathers. The don’t shower. I have to hold my breath in the supermarket. Filthy fuckers.

Maybe it's a UK thing then. I'm at the supermarket several times a week and have never encountered anyone stinky. I was at an event last night, lots of people, no-one smelled. I've never worked with anyone who stank. Those I do encounter are usually homeless, or sometimes people where it is obviously their clothes which smell. Very few people actually reek of perspiration, certainly not in the numbers mentioned on here.

I'm not in Asia.

KitFox · 30/05/2026 22:18

Well that could be true given some people can't afford food or heating. But a wash with water would be a start.

Having read threads on here where people have said they shower twice a week and some before they go to bed? It’s not surprising.

Dirty sods!

Showering only before bed is such a weird one.
i can understand a nice shower before bed but you do need another one when you wake up due to the amount we sweat at night.

But you strip wash daily right?

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 30/05/2026 23:00

Unfortunately, different people have different strengths of BO and subsequently find it harder to keep clothes smelling fresher.

Of course, this doesn't excuse poor hygiene or washing regularly but it isn't their fault per se that their general genetics/bacteria is more prone to being horrible smelling.

I've literally always suffered dreadful BO and unless I am scrupulously clean, wash well with proper soap, and wear effective antiperspirant, my BO tends to permeate clothes underarms more and stink..

I've learned over the years to wash sometimes twice a day if possible, wear clean clothes (and less tight fitting under the armpits), then this prevents horrible stinky BO.

I think being stinky makes you more sensitive to others' smells, but similarly more empathetic as I only know too well how awful and embarrassing it is having disgusting BO. I hate how I can't wear the usual tight clothes without thinking about whether ih might be stinky by the end of the day 😞😖😫

Pinkflamingo10 · 30/05/2026 23:01

9am could be the end of their day. They could have just finished up a 12 hour night shift. Maybe something involving physical work eg in care home.

Certain places do cold water washes and have specific detergents for that. You can't just do 15-20 min cold wash with standard UK detergent and clothes being clean.

I shower before bed, morning showers make me feel shocking. Why on earth would I be dirty in the morning, my Pj's are clean, sheets are clean, bedroom is cold. I don't get sweaty, 2 showers a day is bonkers unless it's a heatwave or you've been having marathon sex all night.

FireBreathingDragon · 30/05/2026 23:25

At the very least a sink of tepid water is enough to clean the vital smelly bits with a bar of soap, if need be, twice a day. Hands, face, neck, armpits, feet then backside??!! It takes all of two minutes.

As someone has suggested it could be depression in some instances, which is terribly sad.

LoopyLoo1991 · 30/05/2026 23:35

Not necessarily BO but other smells as well.
Those girls standing on buses when you're sitting, in leggings and no knickers ... hot fango smell is not what I want a foot from my nose on public transport at 7.10am in the morning.

Also have two schools on my normal bus route - I sometimes use others to go to our other main worksite. One of these is an all girls secondary school but both have had bus hopping young ladies this week with no underwear! 😲
I've seen them trot upstairs with bits on view! Or on the hopper bus with legs slightly open ... luckily only me and my friend (F29) seem to notice. It's even more prominent this year than the 40°C 2022 heatwave. Why is it that much cooler?
I have gone commando in very long summer dresses but that was in my 20s ...
Aircon at work makes it unnecessary thankfully.
Sorry for all those others with sensitive noses this hot time of year 🥵

NotTerfNorCis · 30/05/2026 23:38

Travelling by bus, I seem to find myself behind a stinking bloke nearly every time. Morning or evening. It's a deep ingrained stink, not fresh sweat. The reek of someone who hasn't washed in weeks.

With some people it can be hormonal, I have a friend who can literally be 5 minutes out of the shower and is already starting to smell. Friend is very self conscious and has tried all sorts, including through GP, but with limited effect, it’s particularly bad/ strong at certain times of the month. It is somewhat unpleasant but I know she can’t help it so don’t judge her for it or let it out me off being around her.

Has she ever tried Botox? This can apparently help

YANBU but someone will be along to make excuses like not everyone can afford soap 🙄

Some people do have a medical condition tho ...
Or mental one :(
It's sad

I don't believe our laundry powder is any different to what you use in the UK. I use Persil (non bio) and while I don't do a 15-20 minute wash my wash cycle isn't particularly long.

As I said we are encouraged to use cold water.
