Why do so many people smoke weed these days?

I get the world isn’t a great place for many people but why is it so prevalent now? Is it cheaper than drinking? Or easier to get hold of? I really dislike it and don’t understand why if it’s illegal it isn’t more closely monitored. Am I missing something?

It’s strange how everyone in countries where weed is legal aren’t completely mental isn’t it? Hmmmm.

I’m really not interested in the ‘alcohol vs weed’ arguments, I’m know both can be harmful and antisocial. I just want to understand why weed is so much more common now - I know it’s always been around, I even tried it myself years ago as a student but these days you just seem to smell it everywhere. Perhaps it’s more noticeable as it’s something different people are smoking? I understand it used to be resin but I’m not sure what format it now comes in, only that it absolutely stinks.

As far as monitoring it goes, I realise the police are stretched but I sometimes wonder what they do have time for. Drug driving is a real concern and while the ‘harmless’ idiots smoking the odd joint are less so, the dealers supplying it definitely are.

The police aren’t interested in someone smoking weed - it’s effectively decriminalised. Their guidance is to give a ‘cannabis warning.’ Don’t forget it was reduced to a class C drug based upon the chief scientist’s and police recommendations, then the idiot tories moved it back up to a B. Policing hasn’t changed from C though.

If it were legalised there would be less ‘smoking’ of it and more vaping/ ingestibles. Better for everyone no?

😂 There are a few people on this thread who’d benefit from a few tokes imo.

😂

I worked with a young Australian girl who got into smoking weed because she was alone & distrusted people, over the five years she was part of the team she spiralled in to deep depression & I am sure it was the smoking of weed that made her problem worse.

You on the other hand, seem absolutely lovely 😂

Thank you, I do try. Mostly I succeed but as I get older I find my attitude to drugs and druggies hardening.
Partly this is because of my job, mostly it's because of the general "pee on the fire MY toast is done", don't give a fuck about anyone else as long as I get what I want, when I want it, attitude these people display.
Scrotes everywhere, on trains, in shops, in the street, reeking of weed and acting like idiots.
As someone said upthread, loses, each and every one.
Not that long ago police and customs put huge efforts into the interdiction of drugs, now nobody's bothered and the results are plain to see.

You've got more serious problems than people smoking dope.

Have I though or am I just firmly expressing a different viewpoint?

Turning right wing and bitter/ mean as you age is a known phenomenon. Why do you think the average age of a Reform voter is 67?

Isn't that about the strength of the drugs (eg skunk) being sold though?

MontyDonsBlueSuit · Today 11:41

Nobody seems able to tell me why it’s more common now though, or at least more noticeable. Is it just that people genuinely don’t care anymore because they know nothing will be done? And why does it smell so absolutely disgusting now?

It’s also been shown that those predisposed to mental illness such as schizophrenia seek out ‘risky’ behaviours such as drugs (and sex etc). So, as I say, it’s not clear cut. Which comes first the mental illness or the drugs?

Ditto boys smoking weed in their rooms. Are they suicidal in their rooms BECAUSE they’re smoking weed. Or are they smoking weed BECAUSE they’re suicidal in their rooms?

It’s not clear cut and all the research literature will tell you that.

Lastly, a MH nurse sees the worst cases. Thousands of people the UK over happily smoke/ vape/ ingest cannabis with zero issues. The MH nurse doesn’t see those people so their perception is skewed

Interesting arguments that I hadn't considered actually so thanks for this.

I have young adult kids and teen nephew/neices so said friend is always warning me of the dangers of weed because of what she sees but it is interesting to read this view which makes sense re: predisposition to mental illness.

Alcohol isn’t illegal. Nor does it support criminality.

A suspiciously circular argument. Although the 0% crime rate associated with alcohol is certainly a very persuasive one.

KayFabe · Today 12:39

I like to have a vape (of cannabis) before dinner, like many do with a glass of wine I suppose, but these days have no interest in alcohol. I save all my stalks etc. for butter extraction, which I use for baking. Personally, I think you get the most enjoyable effect from eating cannabis. Much better than mixing with tobacco (a stimulant).
I don't think im a 'loser" though, mortgage-free, semi retired but still run a small business.

Elbowpatch · Today 12:46

I don’t care if other people smoke it as long as they don’t smoke it near me. The smell is revolting.

I must admit I was surprised how long it stays in the system compared to alcohol. How do people manage smoking/eating it and needing to drive?

GasPanic · Today 13:00

Probably because booze and cigarettes are so expensive.

The irony of spending years clamping down on cigarettes while people campaigning to make weed legal should not be lost on people.

Smoking the stuff is very bad for your lungs.

When I was younger people use to smoke what I believe was called “hash” that came in resin form. It didn’t smell nearly so bad.

I think hash and weed are kind of the same thing though right? ( please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m proud to say I’m not the expert on this!)

Maybe they moved on to the current form of this and it’s just that it stinks more, which is why we notice it more?

I didn't know that about the Reform voters age. I haven't turned right wing, I've always believed in order, rules, consideration for others. That's how society works.
Weed smokers are usually the antithesis of that view - stunted anti social non contributors, drains on all kinds of resources.
Important to say not every smoker is like that of course, but loads are - someone upthread said they see weed as the solution, not the problem. No job, no cash, no worries, skin up and someone else will be along to give me money.
No job, no incentive, no motivation, more dope, mental health issues, homelessness, more dope, physical health issues...
It's bad. Bad for people, bad for society.
I'm no preacher, no expert, just a regular person who doesn't like the way society is going but remembers how it was and preferred it that way...
