Why do so many people smoke weed these days?

MontyDonsBlueSuit · Yesterday 21:43

I get the world isn’t a great place for many people but why is it so prevalent now? Is it cheaper than drinking? Or easier to get hold of? I really dislike it and don’t understand why if it’s illegal it isn’t more closely monitored. Am I missing something?

You can always spot the stoners and drug addicts on threads like these with their whatabouttery and denial.

I find it sad that people can’t get through their day with their drug. If that’s you, get help for your addiction and inability to cope with life undrugged.

And I despise any adult who smokes weed around their DCs. Or even those that go to the bottom of the garden to smoke and think their kids can’t smell it. Get a grip.

Sad people can’t get through the day without drinking acohol too and drinking it in front of their kids.

My former childhood friends partner used to go into another room and you definitely could smell it. It’s ridiculous.

She has 3 kids, two with him and he’s smoked it all their lives.

She was often borrowing money off me and I’d never say no, but then I realised I was effectively facilitating her partners ability to smoke weed every day.

I think it is much stronger now. I used to smoke it about 25 years ago, as dud lots of people I know. You often didn't know they were until you walked up close to them. And it was usually bought from someone's friend who grew a couple of plants if a window sill. Now it is bred to be very strong (which is why it stinks) and grow in almost industrial conditions by people who are trafficked. It's the reason I wouldn't touch it now.

Exactly, there are huge trafficking, child slavery and child exploitation issues for all the people being so blase about it on this (and every other thread about it) thread.

Thats what people are supporting when they use it. Its also hugely damaging to the developing brain and many teens use it.

EleanorRavenclaw · Today 08:15

I used to smoke a bit in my 20s and wish I’d never touched the stuff thank god I stopped. The stuff around now is stronger than ever the damage being done to people’s lungs will be shocking. My dad has COPD and is on oxygen 24 hours a day after being a heavy smoker (not even weed) most of his life. He’s now going into palliative care. The last few years for him have been awful it’s a horrible way to live your last few years. If people could see the consequences of smoking, vaping etc they might think twice about it but it’s what they want to do.

Because they're cunts. Selfish, ignorant morons with no concept of anything beyond their own gratification. Vacuous, mouth breathing turds with room temperature IQs. Wastes of money, wastes of time, wastes of space, wastes of skin and organs.

You sound charming.

Horseshit it doesn't. Think about it. People drink to excess, get in brawls, beat up their wife and kids, drive under the influence and kill people.

People smoke pot, gaze at the stars, crash out on the sofa with a packet of crisps.

No comparison to the damage of property and people: pot being illegal when alcohol is legal is a joke 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’d agree with this around 70% of violent incidents that take place in public are alchohol fueled goes up to 95% in nightclubs! A third of all violent incidents occurs when the perpetrator has been effected by alchohol.

I do find this sad if that’s the case.

Personally I don’t drink alcohol at all, (well except for I’ve had maybe ten glasses of champagne in two decades!) my mum is completely teetotal so I didn’t grow up around it apart from seeing people around get very drunk and unfortunately sometimes fight or destroy things (west coast Scotland). I’ve always thought it has a very negative effect on society.

That said, of the people I know who do drink they don’t feel the need to consume it every day around their kids. They will do it either out with friends or on a weekend after kids are in bed.

Unlike the weed smokers I know who do smoke it every day around their kids.

Plus even for those who do drink (moderately) around their kids - people don’t inhale alcohol the way they do weed or cigarettes.

It’s the whole passive smoking thing again but people seem to think its ok as it’s not cigarettes anymore.

I wonder what the cost to the NHS is of issues related to drink and drugs?

Never cared what people do as long as it doesn’t affect the public purse or hurt or affect others. Drugs and alcohol do both.

So does food.
And lack of exercise.
There’s an awful lot of people for the frothers on this thread to hate isn’t there.
Ooo don’t forget dog owners too! 🙄🙄🙄

Pointing out the effects on society of certain selfish and reckless behaviours isn’t “frothing” or “hating”.

The topic of the thread is weed, so obviously the main focus is the impact of that and to a lesser extent other similar substances are being discussed.

There's plenty of threads focused on the impact of poor diet and obesity.

Because it's fun and it calms the nervous system.

The objections to the smell are reasonable, but that's a practical issue of where, when and how it's taken rather than an argument that taking it is bad per se.

Greenwitchart · Today 08:37

Because they're idiots wasting their money on something that affects their health, is illegal and affects people around them (there are always stories on this site about people complaining about not being able to open their windows because neighbours are stinking up the place with their weed smoking).

Somehow people have convinced themselves that it is a harmless and 'cool' pastime.

I didn’t know so many do.

Someone I know well ruined their life with it and made themselves more or less mad.

And it is addictive.

My neighbour is a very good argument against weed. He's smoked it since a teenager and is an absolute mental health mess of a man. Abusive , with frequent breakdowns. It has literally fried his brain.

HellsBells13 · Today 08:46

Weed is so dangerous. My friend who passed away aged 58 has a son, who due to his constant use has been sectioned once per year for many years. He does not work due to mental induced by weed.

Dollymylove · Today 08:49

Why do so many people, me included, like a nice glass of wine?

Simple really, because we like whatever it is we do, otherwise we wouldn't do it.

Unless,of course, addiction is the issue - in the case of both wine and weed.

Having a glass of wine doesnt make a person, their home, and anywhere they happen to be, stink horribly. Try being the neighbour of a dope head and have to keep your windows closed permanently

The smell is so potent though that (unless you live on a huge estate) even taking it in the privacy of your own home, and garden, impacts neighbours. And the smell - like cigarette smoke- embeds into hair, clothing, ive noticed it sitting next to someone on a train. They aren't smoking a joint there and then, on the train, but they absolutely stink of it

MontyDonsBlueSuit · Today 09:07

I’m really not interested in the ‘alcohol vs weed’ arguments, I’m know both can be harmful and antisocial. I just want to understand why weed is so much more common now - I know it’s always been around, I even tried it myself years ago as a student but these days you just seem to smell it everywhere. Perhaps it’s more noticeable as it’s something different people are smoking? I understand it used to be resin but I’m not sure what format it now comes in, only that it absolutely stinks.

As far as monitoring it goes, I realise the police are stretched but I sometimes wonder what they do have time for. Drug driving is a real concern and while the ‘harmless’ idiots smoking the odd joint are less so, the dealers supplying it definitely are.

It's everywhere because the police don't do anything about it.

Oh behave.

Of course - drinking is so civilised and how the 'nice' people relax.

ShorterMumma · Today 09:26

Namechangeforthusone11 · Today 02:24

But it does support criminality, just not financially. Look how many people are victims of violence or abuse due to alcohol, how many people have died due to drink drivers.

Edited

Exactly!

I went for a swim in the sea yesterday and a man was smoking weed IN THE SEA. Don't care what people do at home (as long as no kids affected) but public weed smoking can fuck right off.

You've got more serious problems than people smoking dope.

It stinks, my neighbour used to smoke in in his shed. I mean at least put it in a brownie!

No she/he isn't.
And as the poster is a mental health professional, I think they know what they are talking about.

My friend is a senior MH nurse and says the same. Her wards are full of teenagers who have developed psychosis and serious MH problems directly as a result of smoking weed when their young brains are still developing.
It's a serious problem. And it's a new & growing one according to her, presumably down to the strength of the product they are smoking these days.

It’s also been shown that those predisposed to mental illness such as schizophrenia seek out ‘risky’ behaviours such as drugs (and sex etc). So, as I say, it’s not clear cut. Which comes first the mental illness or the drugs?

Ditto boys smoking weed in their rooms. Are they suicidal in their rooms BECAUSE they’re smoking weed. Or are they smoking weed BECAUSE they’re suicidal in their rooms?

It’s not clear cut and all the research literature will tell you that.

Lastly, a MH nurse sees the worst cases. Thousands of people the UK over happily smoke/ vape/ ingest cannabis with zero issues. The MH nurse doesn’t see those people so their perception is skewed

Juliadiesalone · Today 10:00

Squirrelchops1 · Today 07:28

Agreed.
I went to visit someone in a mental health ward recently. There were lots of younger people on there, the majority for cannabis induced mental health issues eg psychosis.

Lolz, did you go round and quiz them all? The shit people chat on here.
