Why do so many people smoke weed these days?

I get the world isn’t a great place for many people but why is it so prevalent now? Is it cheaper than drinking? Or easier to get hold of? I really dislike it and don’t understand why if it’s illegal it isn’t more closely monitored. Am I missing something?

I hold down a management job in social care, my friends are similar levels - assistant head of year, PHD academic, several experienced social workers, accountant, change management consultant...that's just a handful of the friends I know who smoke weed occasionally or at weekends in downtime. There are more! Nobody would have a clue unless we told them - why would they? I don't smoke at work obviously, or whilst working, nor walking down the street - the weed smoker stereotype described in this thread is simply one fairly visible example of the demographic.

This is exactly what I mean. People see it where it is visible (i.e. The young, smelly, unkempt, toothless crowd at the train station or the Service Users they support who have severe MH issues or their friend's 'off the rails' son who nicks bikes for a living or the neighbour at the bottom of the street who smokes all day and claims UC). They don't see the other side of it. Same as other drugs really.

That's a fair point. I'm concerned about the illegal supply eg county lines but beyond that I dont really care what people do in their own homes - as long as it doesnt affect me. Unfortunately both me and my partner have very selfish smokers for neighbours, all of whom drive after using - I dont think I'm being a frothing MNer to be concerned about that.

Well having had 55 years of the war on drugs, what would be your ideas about eliminating the harm done by the illegality - which as you yourself have pointed out is far greater than the actual harm done by the drug ?

I'll repeat that for 80% of the thread. 55 years. How come a society which apparently won't give a government 2 years to show improvement be happy with the 55 years of nothing to show except well over two million convictions ?

No of course not, anyone who drives when they're not fit to does need to be sanctioned. That's obviously a different issue. I smoke very little and when I do I sometimes won't even drive the next day! County lines are again a concern and I dont think legalising it would prevent that either unfortunately. I know where mine comes from and nothing involves that.

Be aware that the CPS do not need to show you were impaired in order to secure a conviction. So a positive test for cannabis from a week ago is enough.

Best way to avoid a drugs test is to join the police.

I Must be weird as I very very rarely smoke cannabis (like once/ twice a year if someone has it) but I LOVE the smell!

I've done it twice. Only at uni. But the feeling was absolutely amazing

I was in the force for almost 4 years and a family member was for decades. To become an officer they'd take strands of one's hair but we were civilians.

It is very low risk what I do unless I happen to run someone over or such I guess. I once became impaired while at a party where others were smoking, I hadn't touched a puff! But I was affected enough to have to have a lie down. I guess had I been in an accident I could've been convicted then too.
