Rural accommodation Greece - disposing toilet paper and pads

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:37

Going with friend to stay in her usually unoccupied old family home in the mountains near Spartica.
She tells me that it's normal throughout Greece not to flush toilet paper but to put in a bin.
I'm not used to this , can someone help me feel ok about it.
I have very active and messy bowels !!

I haven't been but I've read this a lot. Their sewage system cannot handle it. It's normal to do that there.

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:42

How will I cope?
Won't the toilet paper bin stink ?

This is normal in a lot of countries. There’s normally a bidet shower attached to the toilet.

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:44

This is an old property with v basic amenities.
So no means of washing the detritus down the loo and not leaving it on the paper.
But maybe I could try with a hand held sports top water bottle.
Although I have a v painful shoulder condition which will make that tricky.

I think we will have to take rubbish ( including contents of toilet paper bin) to the village to dispose.
I understand that , of course.
But ..

Not if you empty it regularly.

I stayed in a villa in Cyprus with ten other people and two working toilets - same system!

We just emptied the bin every day, it wasn't a problem. It does take a bit of getting used to and it is a bit yuk if you're not used to it, but it's much better than breaking the toilet and having raw sewage back up.

7238SM · 24/05/2026 08:44

Its common in many countries.

Take some wet wipe toilet paper if your bowels are that messy! 🙄

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/05/2026 08:44

Normal in many places. I dont like it (and yes it does smell) but obviously it's important to comply rather than bugger the plumbing.

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 24/05/2026 08:45

Yes a bin by the loo. Be very careful, particularly when you are tired it's so easy to fall back on the habit of dropping the paper in the loo. Which either leads to a disgusting trying to pick it back out (recommend packing one marigold glove!), or accidentally flushing and blocking the sewage system and having to own up and get the plumber in 🙁. If you are concerned about the "look" of the bin and poo-ey paper then you could take poop scoop bags and use one each time so you can seal them individually. I do hate it but put up with it to travel!

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:50

@TulipsMakeMeHappy thank you , these are the kind of tips I'm after.
My partner is coming and he's hopelessly forgetful so I'm worried he'll forget.
I could take something - like a cat litter scoop - for when he forgets.

You wipe, use their scented bin bags and ignore how minging it feels!

Flizzy · 24/05/2026 08:53

You could take some nappy bags to put anything particularly bad in!

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:53

@7238SM my bowels really are that messy . And over productive .
I have had surgery on my stomach and oesophagus because of cancer.

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:54

Yes , nappy bags . Excellent advice.

OP posts:
Bubblebathbefore8 · 24/05/2026 08:55

I was coming on to say nappy bags or scented poo bags, pets at home sell the scented biodegradable ones in funky colours.

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:56

I knew MN would be my go to for help.
Any more advice greatly appreciated.

I'm off to see what I can do one handed in the garden before the heat is too bad.

You need a HappyPo - can get on Amazon. Squeezy bottle portable bidet. Get the XL if you can. Such a great invention!

dallysally · 24/05/2026 09:00

I always take small plastic bag with a packet of wet wipes and a roll of dog poo bags to Greece. Keep it in my handbag.

I put the used wet wipes into a dog poo bag, and put in the bin you always find beside a Greek loo. Simple.

Greek plumbing can’t cope with loo paper. It clogs and can cost thousands to fix

I'm sorry, but if your husband forgets it is up to him to sort it out not you.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2026 09:15

Take nappy sacks or biodegradable poo bags and put it in there

PrincessofWells · 24/05/2026 09:16

I use nappy sacks or dog poo bags for the waste paper and tie at the top, then put in the bin. Theres no smell that way.

MouldyCandy · 24/05/2026 09:28

As above, look on Amazon for a portable bidet.

NameChangeScot · 24/05/2026 09:31

I've only been to hotels in Greece. But the bins never smelt, I imagine they were emptied very regularly and they were sealed pedal bins. You get used to it.

aliceinawonderland · 24/05/2026 10:39

I thought you could flush the actual poo down the toilet… just not the paper??

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 10:41

@SheldontheWonderSchlong ordered .

Yes you can, it is literally just the paper you wipe with after that goes in the bin. I got used to it after a weeks holiday and came back home and almost put my paper in my bathroom bin 🤣🤣🤣
