Rural accommodation Greece - disposing toilet paper and pads

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:37

Going with friend to stay in her usually unoccupied old family home in the mountains near Spartica.
She tells me that it's normal throughout Greece not to flush toilet paper but to put in a bin.
I'm not used to this , can someone help me feel ok about it.
I have very active and messy bowels !!

Adultery isn't illegal. Doesn't mean it's fine to do.

Define what you mean by 'fine'?

Is there a reason for you not to follow this advice….?

For my convenience due to being nd and other medical conditions.

So your personal convenience overrides the risk of the wipes causing costly blockages and damaging the environment?

Not on the islands, and very few on the mainland. I work in Greece, so no need to Google

Omg yes they do. Like i said Google it. Good lord

@ktopfwcv can you not just dispose of your wipes in a small bin and empty it every day/2 days? Or buy flushable wipes?? There are many now advertised as flushable.

@Balloonhearts I have had my cottage about 35 years and the cesspit was put in then, new. I stay there about 4 times a year, sometimes with friends, and it is still functioning. I am dreading needing to get another one done and hoping it will outlive me!

Most cesspits and septic tanks have soakaways but eventually the ‘solids’ need emptying. There shouldn’t be a need for a new one to be installed on a private property. If yours is only 35 years old surely it has access for emptying ?

We lived in rural Norfolk where there was no mains drainage and only needed our septic tank emptied once every two years; we could flush paper because the waste/soil pipes to the tank were of a large enough bore to take the paper.

It was a a bit of a cost shock when we moved and saw how much the waste water charges were.

We stayed in 4 and 5 hotels in Beijing and Shanghai and the paper there has to go in a bin; the bathrooms didn’t smell. Mind you, their diet is possibly healthier than a lot of westerners…

You asked why I do it and I explained why.

I'm not going to stop whilst it's legal to do so but I think you'll find this is classic human behaviour. You only need to glance at the Active threads to see this.

Humans tend to do things for their convenience, yes. Including using smart phones which significantly impact the environment.

I have flushable wipes but they've now changed the advise saying no wipe is flushable.

Don’t come crying to us when your neighbours turn on you for blocking your street with your wet wipes!

Look under modern exceptions.

And yet you think you’re above this advice. Lovely.

Are you always this obtuse?

Eleos · 24/05/2026 17:10

ktopfwcv · 24/05/2026 16:16

I haven't been made aware of any that I've caused.

As the manager of various villas and hotels in Greece over the years, I can tell you that you will have caused damage and expense and great inconvenience.

Every single time we have a blockage it has been caused by wet wipes and sanitary pads.

Your selfish habit is a nightmare, though I have charged guests in the past, when it is clear they have caused the blockage - despite lined, sealed bins, daily changes and signs to only flush natural waste.

So your unawareness might have been luck thus far.

I was wondering the same. I also think it’s easier for them to be like this when they’re replying anonymously, hidden by a screen.

I find it difficult to describe people due to my nd but thanks for the interest.

BertieBotts · 24/05/2026 17:13

I got a bit confused by the brief addition of "fine to flush" logos on certain wipes in the EU but this video clears up where it came from, why it disappeared, and why you still shouldn't flush wipes. (Yes in the UK).

Not in this hotel. I checked. But I will pass on your concerns next time.

Pippatpip · 24/05/2026 17:17

There is a fabulous product called Wype which is gel you squirt onto paper and then wipe - like a wet wipe but obviously better for the planet. Cleans you up a treat and one small bottle lasts ages.

LarksAscending · 24/05/2026 17:31

ktopfwcv · 24/05/2026 16:24

It was my point.
It's not illegal so I'll continue doing so.

It’s your water bills that will go up to pay for clearing it all over time…

Why would that have any effect on OP? She can wipe her arse as normal, it’s the no flushing she takes issue with and you’d not be able to flush gel coated paper either.

Not to mention, as I said earlier, the poor sods who have to deal with the blockage.
