Rural accommodation Greece - disposing toilet paper and pads

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:37

Going with friend to stay in her usually unoccupied old family home in the mountains near Spartica.
She tells me that it's normal throughout Greece not to flush toilet paper but to put in a bin.
I'm not used to this , can someone help me feel ok about it.
I have very active and messy bowels !!

Maybe. I don't talk to the companies. I'm just able to flush it down in Greece also.

@ktopfwcv please take on board the info you have received here. It's not illegal but it is destructive.
Would you be happy for your water bills to rise because they have to deal with blockages caused by you and others who don't care?

Rubyupbeat · 24/05/2026 16:26

I take water wipes for cleaning myself and dog poo bags to put the toilet paper and wipes in, it cuts down on the smell.

SqueakyFromme · 24/05/2026 16:29

@PEBBLES16 YES fuck the planet eh ?

Christ you are entitled. Just because you are not breaking the law doesn't mean you should do it. Wipes can cause problems if you stay in holiday accomodation where they have a septic tank or shared sewage pipes, huge problems and expensive problems actually, but it sounds you'll just carry on doing what you want.

I will, yeah.

Italiangreyhound · 24/05/2026 16:30

Take some individual perfumed doggy poo bags and use those.

These are eco friendly

I haven't received any new info Re flushing wipes in the UK. I will continue to flush them as I've said.

Bjorkdidit · 24/05/2026 16:33

FFS I knew most of MN would be ridiculous about this.

Just fold your toilet paper and put it in the bin and empty it regularly. No need to bag individual lots of toilet paper.

How would you cope if you went somewhere with really primitive sanitation?

loislovesstewie · 24/05/2026 16:34

Do you get the info from the water company saying only 3 things should go down the loo? Pee, poo and paper?

Bjorkdidit · 24/05/2026 16:34

And don't flush any wipes anywhere. FFS, what is wrong with you?

We live on a new build estate. Last year the drains got blocked outside, and they absolutely bloody stunk. It was a hot day so DH went out with some bottles of water for the men who were going round clearing the drains. He asked what it was that was causing the blockage and one of the men replied “it’s wipes. It’s always wipes, mate!”

Everyone, literally everyone knows not to flush anything other than toilet paper down the toilet. There’s been so many documentaries and adverts about it so you must have been living under a rock not to have heard about it.

unemptiable cess pit
A metaphor for something...let me think...

Just because you are not breaking the law doesn't mean you should do it.
Exactly! We all have a responsibility to not do things that make things worse for others/society as a whole/ourselves ultimately. I mean, that's just selfish and ignorant.

Viviennemary · 24/05/2026 16:40

It's vile and totally unhygienic and has put me off going back to Greece. I'm amazed the EU allow this health hazard with all their other draconian rules and regulations.

The bins are emptied daily. It's really no more unhygienic than putting wipes that have cleaned a baby's bum or nappies in the bin.

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:44

This is an old property with v basic amenities.
So no means of washing the detritus down the loo and not leaving it on the paper.
But maybe I could try with a hand held sports top water bottle.
Although I have a v painful shoulder condition which will make that tricky.

I think we will have to take rubbish ( including contents of toilet paper bin) to the village to dispose.
I understand that , of course.
But ..

This is brilliant. You just need toilet paper to dry yourself.

@TulipsMakeMeHappy thank you , these are the kind of tips I'm after.
My partner is coming and he's hopelessly forgetful so I'm worried he'll forget.
I could take something - like a cat litter scoop - for when he forgets.

Well it might be a mistake he only makes once and then you'll find yourselves possibly up shit creek literally. So a regular reminder and leave a note on the toilet seat

HarryKanesRightFoot · 24/05/2026 16:48

I was watching a BBC series last night where this exact issue came up! I’d never heard of it before, and thought it sounded unpleasant!!

This is so short-sighted of you. And I’m amazed you haven’t yet heard that the only things to be flushed are pee, poo and loo roll, as others have said.

Advised, yes.

countrygirl99 · 24/05/2026 16:52

ktopfwcv · 24/05/2026 16:24

It was my point.
It's not illegal so I'll continue doing so.

Adultery isn't illegal. Doesn't mean it's fine to do.

HarryKanesRightFoot · 24/05/2026 16:53

ktopfwcv · 24/05/2026 16:52

Advised, yes.

Is there a reason for you not to follow this advice….?
