Rural accommodation Greece - disposing toilet paper and pads

Going with friend to stay in her usually unoccupied old family home in the mountains near Spartica.
She tells me that it's normal throughout Greece not to flush toilet paper but to put in a bin.
I'm not used to this , can someone help me feel ok about it.
I have very active and messy bowels !!

Impossible to prove. Thank you.

I get it. You don't care about other people. Ok.

Are you using a smart phone?

I have a smartphone and I drive a car. For most people it's very difficult to manage modern life without those things. However, it makes no impact on my lifestyle whatsoever to put a wet wipe in the bin and not flush it.

I will not be engaging with you any more so rant away.

So you clearly feel no responsibility for other people or the environment generally. Shame on you.

I think @CaptainMyCaptain realised you only paid for the 5 minute argument and your time has run out.

Take some wet wipes and scented nappy bags if you’re worried about it. It’s a muscle memory thing, so easy to forget! In hotels they empty the bathroom bins daily and never had an issue with it smelling so assume people do the same at home too.

This is the only downside to Greece, such a beautiful country. I have been to the mainland and the islands many times. The bin thing is OK if you only need to go once or twice a day.

I went to Crete last year and I was unlucky enough to get a stomach bug. I spent three days in the bathroom with d&v. It was horrendous and we had to keep asking for the bathroom bin to be emptied/more toilet rolls. It's definitely made me wary of going again.

Branleuse · Yesterday 12:55

If you took nappy sacks then you could put used toilet paper in that before putting in the bin, and then it's not going to be smelly.

You're seemingly only here to wind people up, having returned for another shift this morning.

I go to Crete every year and I've got used to this now. I have found this thread useful and have purchased one of the portable bidet bottles mentioned.

I would probably get a roll of those green compostable bags and put it all in one of those and tie it off.

I have no idea what happens to the waste from toilet paper bins, but if it is composted then the green bag will work fine.

By repeating what others have said? I see.

It's vile and totally unhygienic and has put me off going back to Greece. I'm amazed the EU allow this health hazard with all their other draconian rules and regulations.

I tell you what is vile, is the used toilet paper and other detritus I saw on a UK beach 2 summers ago. But then I guess raw sewage being pumped into your seas will do that.

Laughable that anyone on here talks about the disposing of toilet paper in lined bins with such shock when over there, you literally swim in shit - should you dare brave it.

andana · Yesterday 19:18

Take nappy bags for the paper if you’re self conscious :)

Try something like wype or wet wipes so you need less paper - bag up in nappy bags after.
