Rural accommodation Greece - disposing toilet paper and pads

limetrees32 · 24/05/2026 08:37

Going with friend to stay in her usually unoccupied old family home in the mountains near Spartica.
She tells me that it's normal throughout Greece not to flush toilet paper but to put in a bin.
I'm not used to this , can someone help me feel ok about it.
I have very active and messy bowels !!

Not if you empty it regularly.

I stayed in a villa in Cyprus with ten other people and two working toilets - same system!

We just emptied the bin every day, it wasn't a problem. It does take a bit of getting used to and it is a bit yuk if you're not used to it, but it's much better than breaking the toilet and having raw sewage back up.

This. You can fold the used tissue so nothing is exposed.

I didn't know this.

I always use wipes and never toilet paper but had no issues flushing them when in Greece!

Depends where you stay if you stay somewhere more modern and fancy with updated sewage systems and pipes your fine if you are somewhere a bit dated then no you can't flush toilet roll or wipes

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/05/2026 15:00

If possible I think I would burn it.

get toilet wet wipes and nappy bags. They are thicker than normal paper so much easier to deal with when messy.

MissMoneyFairy · 24/05/2026 15:05

Nappy bags, baby wipes, disposable gloves, wet wipes.

the Sewage system in Greece doesn’t account for how much you paid for your hotel room

You shouldnt even flush wet wipes in the UK.

Plinketyplonks · 24/05/2026 15:08

You’ll get used to it! We had this at a v old house we stayed in in Yemen. You take nappy bags and seal each errrr ‘deposit’ in an individual bag before putting in the bathroom bin?

viques · 24/05/2026 15:08

MissMoneyFairy · 24/05/2026 15:05

Nappy bags, baby wipes, disposable gloves, wet wipes.

Disposable gloves? All you are being asked to do is wipe your bum as usual then put the paper in the bin rather than dropping it in the toilet!

The OP said rural so I pictured outside space. I camped in the desert in Morocco and we had to burn used toilet paper. The actual poo could be left to the dung beetles to deal with.

loislovesstewie · 24/05/2026 15:11

It's quite normal in Greece to put toilet paper in the bin provided near the toilet. The system can't cope with it and it's just disposed of in the refuse. Lots of Greek islands collect rubbish more often than in the UK. It's not a problem.

Don’t burn anything- wildfires are a huge risk in Greece. Especially in dry rural areas!

Ok I accept that. There was nothing to catch fire in the desert.

KnittyKnotty · 24/05/2026 15:22

Take a pack of nappy sacks or even dog poo bags if you don't want anyone to see the contents.

It it causes blockages which mine never have.

It often causes blockages further down the sewage system. The wet wipes don't disintegrate like toilet paper, they then bind with fat, and other things, in the system and becomes a giant fat berg. It's disgusting for the workers to have to break up and remove. We are always being reminded not to put wet wipes down the loo.

@Balloonhearts I have had my cottage about 35 years and the cesspit was put in then, new. I stay there about 4 times a year, sometimes with friends, and it is still functioning. I am dreading needing to get another one done and hoping it will outlive me!

@TulipsMakeMeHappy thank you , these are the kind of tips I'm after.
My partner is coming and he's hopelessly forgetful so I'm worried he'll forget.
I could take something - like a cat litter scoop - for when he forgets.

Please ask your husband to sort out his own mess, he’s an adult.

Oh OK so it's not like an every 10 years thing then. They must be massive to last such a long time.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 24/05/2026 15:51

@Balloonhearts
Forgot to say, i think it cost me about £700 35 years ago, so it would probably be unaffordable now for me. They are very deep and circular with a drystone-walled surround in the pit, so a bit of a skilled job. The top is cemented over. I have a stone patio over it and a rose bed next to it, that does ahem, surprisingly well.

Augustone · 24/05/2026 15:53

The diameter of the pipes taking the waste away is tiny compared to the UK. I second taking scented nappy sacks or dog poop bags away and using them to put used toilet paper in and then putting.it in the bin next to the toilet.
I couldn’t bear the thought of the paper just sitting there but blocked pipes and sewage backing up is a worse thought!

This shocks me. Every Greek holiday I’ve taken, there’s always been a notice in the accommodation about the plumbing and not to flush anything other than human waste. That’s been in 5 star hotels and backpacking hostels.

Empress13 · 24/05/2026 15:59

Any holiday you go on in Greece has this rule though I’m at a loss to understand why in the 21st century Greece do not have adequate plumbing systems
