Am I going to look like an idiot ?

So basically next month I’m going on holiday.
Its a 10 hour flight and just as luck would of had my period is due that day.
i have endometriosis so my periods are crazy heavy.
Anyway just in conversation to my good friend I told her I would have to get up a few times to the bathroom to freshen up etc so will need to take my handbag to the toilet on the plane -carrying spare underwear etc
She said people will think I’m a loon getting up with my handbag
The thing is what else am I meant to do ? Walk down the aisle with a pair of knickers and a always pad?
Im self conscious at the best of times
Would you even bat an eyelid ?
I mean surely people might even do skincare on a 10 hour flight ?

Is she always incredibly tactless? She’s wrong. Nobody will even notice.

DoYouLikeYourNaneFred · 18/05/2026 18:30

It's your friend that's the loon, not someone taking a bag to the toilets!

Don't give lt another thought!

but I'd definitely delay my period if I could. I used to take my pill back to back to avoid them altogether!!

maudelovesharold · 18/05/2026 18:30

I always take my handbag with me to any public loo - it contains my comb (in case I discover my hair’s a mess), tissues (in case there’s no paper), anti-bac hand wipes (in case there’s no soap), anti shine powder (in case my forehead or nose look shiny) - I had no idea it would be fuelling speculation amongst casual observers!

professionalcommentreader · 18/05/2026 18:32

That is not something I’d notice or even if I did would think about, plus you’re not going to see these people again so it’s a non issue.

grumpygrape · 18/05/2026 18:33

I promise you, nobody is going to stand up and shout ‘Look at that woman taking her handbag to the loo!’, unless your loony friend is on the same flight of course 😂 Even if anyone noticed, what is the likelihood of you ever meeting them again ?

Better clean and comfortable than leaking.

SnappyQuoter · 18/05/2026 18:36

Your friend is a nut job. Or just very stupid. Does she not travel much? Or is she generally very self conscious person?

I have a friend who thinks everyone is always looking at her and judging or caring about what she wears/eats/drinks/carries. She won’t even turn around in the street if she has forgotten something or changed her mind about wanting to go to a shop we have to walk up to the next shop go in, walk round and come out to turn back down the hill as you “can’t just turn around in the street as people will think you’re stupid.”

I always take my bag to the loos in a plane to freshen up. Don’t think anyone has ever noticed.

BillieWiper · 18/05/2026 18:36

People will not think you're a loon for bringing your bag into the toilet?! Why would they be looking at what you're carrying in there? Doubt they'd assume it's a bomb. And if it was to vape you'd not need to hide it in a bag.

Bristolandlazy · 18/05/2026 18:44

Your friend isn't being very kind saying that to you. She's wrong, I'm not thinking about what people are taking to the toilet on the plane. I don't think anybody cares.

fantam · 18/05/2026 18:52

So are you going to get Norethisterone either from your GP or online then? If not, why not! Go on, enjoy the journey and at least a week of your trip without a period.

Bring your bag to the loo if you want to anyway, crossbody is good for the trek down the plane aisle, less chance of clattering someone on the head if sudden turbulence happens!.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/05/2026 18:54

Quite normal, I should say, to take your handbag with you. Also people get up to stretch their legs and walk about so nobody is going to know you are going to the loo each time.

archofrose · 18/05/2026 18:57

I would never leave my bag unattended, even if I’m travelling with someone. My valuables are my responsibility. So it’s your friend who is the odd one out. Or else she doesn’t care if someone looks in her bag when she’s in the loo.

fragrancestylist · 18/05/2026 18:59

You could get one of the Uniqlo bags that everyone seems to have, and then it can just go across you and would be even less noticeable, depending on what your regular handbag is like. You could pack it with all the kit you need, and keep it in your carry on bag, and just remove it to go to the toilet when you need to.

Vaguelyclassical · 18/05/2026 19:03

I can't imagine NOT taking my handbag with me when I go to the loo. As somebody noted, it also contains wipes, tissues, makeup, comb (and in my case sticking plasters, anti-histamine inhaler, nail clippers, tiny pill box with ibuprofen, and the complete works of Proust).

wheelywheelynice · 18/05/2026 19:08

Your friend is an idiot. Even if she were correct how would it manifest as you're not a mindreader and no one would say anything anyway?

74usernames · 18/05/2026 19:11

Your friend is very cruel to make you worry about something like this. It’s shit enough to have endometriosis as it is.

I’ve flown a lot. Not a single person will care.

I would have a smaller bag/toiletry bag inside my carry-on bag, with just what you need for going to the loo, and just take that instead.

I always divide things in zip lock bags too, one for medicines, one for small brush/mini creams/freshen up stuff etc. Makes it easier on the plane to find stuff.

Your friend needs to get out more. You need to stop listening to your friend. I hope you get help for your pain one day, my dd has had it for years it and has fought for years but gets dismissed everywhere. It’s actually heartbreaking.

74usernames · 18/05/2026 19:24

As long as you don’t clip your toe nails, walk around with no socks, sneeze in your hands or recline your seat as soon as the no belt sign is off you are good to go. 😊

Whyarentyoureadyyet · 18/05/2026 19:31

I can't even begin to understand your friend!

Most women regularly take their handbag to the loo. Or have a smaller pouch or handbag within their larger bag. For precisely this reason!

also highly recommend talking to the GP about options to delay your period /reduce blood flow. And definitely recommend period pants - when my flow is heavy I use the pants plus pads

user293948849167 · 18/05/2026 20:59

Of course nobody will think you’re strange for this! Your friend is strange for saying that.

But also going to suggest period pants for extra protection and also norethisterone to delay your period- you can buy it from online pharmacies so don’t even need a GP appointment (you might want to try it before the holiday though in case of side effects)

gamerchick · 18/05/2026 21:02

Tena pants?

TheChosenTwo · 18/05/2026 21:05

Your friend is nuts.
I have a small cross body Uniqlo bag that I fly with, it’s the right size for carrying essentials like you’ll need and not bulky for hauling about. No one would even notice I was taking my bag with me to the loo!
Also, why would it matter if people DID notice you repeatedly taking your bag to the toilet?
I too have terrible periods, PCOS, endometriosis and ademyosis (sp? Don’t even really know what it is tbh!) and awaiting surgery to help alleviate the flooding - I have to take spare pants and bottoms to work on the worst days, I take my bag with me and end up coming out with different clothes on 😂

This, who doesnt take their handbag with them to public loos?

Where do posters find all these stupid friends they post about?

Mumsgirls · 18/05/2026 21:26

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/05/2026 17:24

Get a prescription from your GP to delay your period.

Agree . No need to spoil your trip

Wamid · 18/05/2026 21:50

I would use a tampon plus a pad. Double up just in case.

BunnyWabbit2000 · 18/05/2026 21:52

Your friend is nuts don't worry!

I hope you have a lovely time x

Thankyou everyone !
im going to take a wash bag and keep some bits in there that i need
im unsure about the period delay tablets, only because I get pretty bad pms
will I get those symptoms constantly until I stop taking the tablet ?
im going on holiday for 10 days and I have 3 heavy days then a light day and its over
So im torn between taking the tablet or just getting the 4 days done
I’ve ordered some next period swim shorts
I have never tried them before but im hopeful !
