Am I going to look like an idiot ?

So basically next month I’m going on holiday.
Its a 10 hour flight and just as luck would of had my period is due that day.
i have endometriosis so my periods are crazy heavy.
Anyway just in conversation to my good friend I told her I would have to get up a few times to the bathroom to freshen up etc so will need to take my handbag to the toilet on the plane -carrying spare underwear etc
She said people will think I’m a loon getting up with my handbag
The thing is what else am I meant to do ? Walk down the aisle with a pair of knickers and a always pad?
Im self conscious at the best of times
Would you even bat an eyelid ?
I mean surely people might even do skincare on a 10 hour flight ?

I have a stoma and have to take my stoma kit when I go to loo on plane. No one else notices or gives a shit. You are overthinking. Just go and have a great time.

ConnieHeart · 18/05/2026 17:54

I would never notice if someone was carrying a handbag. It's certainly not unusual for a woman to take it to the toilet. I'm pretty sure I usually do on a plane and couldn't care less if there's a tiny chance someone thinks it's weird

Papersquidge · 18/05/2026 17:56

Nobody will be in the least bit interested in what you’re doing

G5000 · 18/05/2026 17:57

Nobody cares. Also I often fly alone and will take my handbag with valuables and documents to toilet instead of leaving it unattended.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 18/05/2026 17:57

It’s not weird to take your bag with you at all!

Bellyblueboy · 18/05/2026 18:05

Of course people take their bag with them to the loo. We all touch up make up, or on a long flight brush teeth, apply more deodorant, even change t-shirt before landing.

and I agree get a prescription to delay your period - you can get it online from superdrug if your GP is hard to get hold of

tartyflette · 18/05/2026 18:07

I nearly always take a small bag with me when I go into an airplane toilet for multiple reasons like washing, teeth cleaning, changing clothes or underwear. etc etc. No one will notice or care. Really.

DontReplyAll · 18/05/2026 18:07

Your friend is entirely wrong, no one will bat an eyelid.

If it helps, things I have taken a bag to the loo for in long haul flights:

To deal with periods
To inject medicines
To remove my contacts/or put them in
To change clothes after a child has vomited on me
To change clothes because an adult spilled a bottle of wine all over me.
To change clothes because I’m going from one climate extreme to another
To wash my face, brush my teeth, brush my hair.

Not only that but excepting the first one, men do all these things as well as women.

Not a soul will notice (or care) I promise.

SusieMyersonAndAssociates · 18/05/2026 18:10

Your friends an idiot. No one will even notice.

However, there are some things you could do to make yourself more comfortable. Heavy duty period pants were a godsend for my impossibly heavy endo periods. You don’t have to change as regularly as pads and tampons and they are so much more comfortable. Heat pads will improve your journey too.

Fast800goingforit · 18/05/2026 17:26

I believe GPs won't now usually prescribe for holidays. There was a thread about it last week.

But I agree - no one will bat an eyelid. Maybe get some period pants as additional protection?

Edited

You can just buy from Boots Pharmacy online

TY78910 · 18/05/2026 18:12

nobody will care but if the comment got to you then get a bum bag and just keep it strapped on / across your body and just not take it off. I always have one to keep passports in.

JaneLupin · 18/05/2026 18:15

I bet no one’s even going to notice. And if they do, they won’t care.

And aside from reasons like periods and freshening up, I usually take my handbag to the loo because it’s got valuables in it and I don’t want to leave it unattended.

Happyjoe · 18/05/2026 18:20

I think your friend is a little odd! Normal people don't notice if you take a handbag onto a plane toilet - in fact I would presume it was a sensible thing to do because of carrying passport etc.

Just as a side, have you ever tried tranexamic acid? Was a godsend for me.

HappyHacienda · 18/05/2026 18:21

Your friend is nuts.

OneFishWonder · 18/05/2026 18:22

Try those Tena lady disposable absorbent underwear for your flight.

FieryA · 18/05/2026 18:23

Your friend is an idiot! Who the hell is monitoring what someone takes to the loo with them? And why wud anyone care? I always carry my handbag to the toilet. Tell your friend to mind her own business.

Yellowpapersun · 18/05/2026 18:24

Your friend is very strange- would she expect a woman travelling alone to leave her handbag behind on her seat if she went to the toilet? I often take mine into the toilet as I might want to brush my hair and put moisturiser on if it's a long flight. Lots of women take their handbag with them and I've seen men take their toilet bag.

AtomicBlondeRose · 18/05/2026 18:25

I’m sure I’ve seen people carrying wash bags to the toilets - not unusual at all for women to want to wash and retouch make up at the end of a flight so wouldn’t be weird at all.

crazycatladie · 18/05/2026 18:25

I’d be more worried about leaking than anything else. Did a long haul flight with a heavy period last year, had a pad and period pants on just in case.

Savvysix1984 · 18/05/2026 18:27

I always take my handbag. Totally normal. Don’t worry about it.

Random321 · 18/05/2026 18:28

She's the loon.

No one will care or notice.

She clearly has no knowledge of endo either!

I’m a GP and I regularly prescribe norethisterone to delay periods for holidays.

DizziLizzy · 18/05/2026 18:29

Your friend is the loon. No one will notice or care... .

Mumofteenandtween · 18/05/2026 18:30

Totally weird! So much so that someone on the plane will probably shout:-

“Oh my God! The woman there doesn’t want to leave all her valuables with the complete stranger that she has been sat next to! Weirdo! Weirdo!”

And then the rest of the plane will join in the WEIRDO chant.

😂

ThePaleDreamer · 18/05/2026 18:30

Ive been on 10 long haul flights in the last 6 months, and seriously I have never paid attention to what someone is taking in to the bathroom
