A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Pat McFadden and Steve Reed are surely the only ones left batting for bollard. The rest have fled or hedging their bets on getting a good job with the next lot.

That is so true. The rats fleeing the sinking ship metaphor is entirely apt with Starmer’s government.

The ‘grown ups’ 🙄 have decided that it’s more grown up to toady around the party members’ favourite now.

I was shocked to see that the rate of rape has doubled since 2015. We are hearing a lot about Afghan men…but are there any hard statistics showing that the rape spike is due to migrants? Are statistics gathered about the race and ethnicity of rapists?

Gosh, you are right, it has actually more than doubled from 30k to 71k. And the number of rape trials has halved in that time.

I don't know how we could ever know what is happening @Pacificsunshine, when we have such piss poor prosecution rates.

Could it be that people are more likely now to report rapes than they would have been in the past? The "me too" movement might have had an impact on rates of reporting?

Agree about the piss poor prosecution rate. And the sentences given even when a prosecution is successfully brought.

also on the rape, reckon more end up with film or cctv now - I’d be worried given recent cases that the evidence is better due to social media and phone use in the younger generation. There’s an epidemic of sexual violence in primary and secondary too isn’t there - child on child abuse has surged.

Upstartled · 31/05/2026 13:12

But wouldn't additional evidence result in more prosecutions, rather than more allegations and fewer prosecutions?

Unrivalled · 31/05/2026 13:14

Id say it’s a game of two halves - if you know your rape was filmed, you are much more likely to get a conviction yes so it would encourage me anyway to be more likely to report. Idk why there are fewer prosecutions.

i am firmly behind Jess P though on the ban it now and stand up to big tech though, the effect on violence against girls and women is clear.

Upstartled · 31/05/2026 13:20

Urgh, so the filming gives women false confidence that it will result in a prosecution? Jesus, how fucking hopeless.

asillysausage · 31/05/2026 13:25

Just had a Labour canvasser at my front door for the by-election. She looked extremely uncomfortable when I gave her the list of reasons why I would not be voting for Andy. I told her that I could not vote for an egotistical, arrogant man who is only using the constituency as a stepping stone for his bid for PM. Also, how could I vote for a man who does more U-turns than Starmer, who will say anything to be elected? As a woman, I would be foolish to vote for a man who would happily sign away my sex based rights. Also, the city of Manchester may love him as Mayor, but in the outer towns, he has done nothing to improve them. His precious Bee Network is not even available in Orrell/Billinge.

She said, so I take it you will be voting for Reform, then. I said, no, I do not agree with their policies, I am so disillusioned with labours polices and dirty campaign tactics, that I am going to vote for the Monster Raving Loony Party to show how pissed off I am at this election being forced upon us. I told her that the whole tactic of stating where Rob Kenyon was born (Haydock, an old Makerfield ward) was totally ridiculous, given Andy is a champagne socialist, who is a posh middle-class wanker, growing up in millionaires' row. Totally ridiculous, hence I may as well vote for a completely bonkers party 😂, she replied with, Well, if you vote for them, then Reform will end up in power. I replied, well, that’s on Andy, isn’t it, being an arrogant fool, and Labour taking this area for granted for years!

LupaMoonhowl · 31/05/2026 13:30

I would tell them I was going to vote for C Reform even if I wasn’t just to rattle them.
Or tell them I would vote Labour to make them complacent.
Or that I would vote Labour if it was a different candidate, not one who disgracefully voted against pursuing the Pakistani rape gangs.

DancingFerret · 31/05/2026 13:38

Rape - and also knife crime: Hardly a day goes by without a report of a stabbing somewhere in the UK. Our country is unrecognisable, and IMO it all started with Blair's open door policies. His recent speech bordered on political common sense, but there's no doubt he did a lot of damage during his time in office.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 31/05/2026 13:41

TBH, I’d just ask them why I should vote for a man who wants to depose a very fine, able, honest and decent Labour PM. The answer would be amusing either way.

Oh, well played. I would love to see that.

Upstartled · 31/05/2026 14:14

I saw read some Burnham supporters were encouraging him to put Haigh as Chancellor in this fantasy cabinet. Like really? Is she going to tell the bond markets that the national debt was stolen and she intends to claim on the insurance? A fraudster as a chancellor is at least one of the more unexpected ways for this situation to get worse.

HowdoyoureallyKnow · 31/05/2026 14:16

@asillysausage not such a silly sausage ! Great response.

Goodness now he's war gaming a general election which could be further Machivelian double play bluff becsuee people are now desperate to get labour out so they may vote for Andy in the belief they will get a general election

HowdoyoureallyKnow · 31/05/2026 14:16

Vote Andy to get starmer and labour out !

I agree AB has said some worrying command economy type things, but his actual record as mayor is working cross party. If he does lurch to the left, it’s clear there’s a slim mandate for that so we’ll just have to hang on…tax
burden is already crazy.

About the increase in rape and sexual assault

The ONS do not keep figures linked to whether or not a person was born in the UK.

However, individual prisons do keep those figures and there are people out there trying to do the work of finding out whether certain factors have led to an increase. I think the answer is yes, but I don't keep receipts. Blessed are the receipt keepers but I am not one of them. The crimes linked to certain hotels are definitely an issue.

there are other factors at play of course.

SapphireCasino · 31/05/2026 19:33

On a lighter note, I seem to have a different feeling about the Diplomat than others. So I nearly stopped watching in season 1 and I thought that this season was the best one.

I carried on watching because of Ato Essandoh (he was brilliant in Elementary but I think they had to have him a lot less than they wanted because he was required for a whole other bunch of shows that I don't watch) so I was really pleased when I started watching this and there he was! However, it didn't hold my interest that much in the first season - it was his performance and the fact that I knew Alison Janney was coming that kept me watching it.

I thought this season was really good, but the big surprise in episode six was it - I think that was a lot to live up to? I was expecting more from the next two episodes. I still thought it was very good. But if that happened in reality, wouldn't there be more chaos?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry when they keep talking about Britain becoming an increasingly irrelevant dot on the map.

I would so love to go and see where they film the American ambassador house.

it's very strangely paced I feel. The good moments are really really good.

SapphireCasino · 31/05/2026 21:04

I always seem to hop on this thread when there's no one else here 😂

which would be a good thing in real life situations!

I don't normally ask AI questions. This evening I have been asking them about EES. Basically, I was puzzled why America had the system for so long and Europe didn't. Seems to be mainly ideological. Americans have been much more sensible about keeping people out, seems to be the short version. So their airports and their IT systems were built with that in mind in the first place. Interesting.

That's based on the assumption that AI is correct, of course. But so far all the answers I've been given do make sense.

Just heard this on the radio. Big drop.

Reform UK is as popular as Labour among trade union members, polling has shown.

The survey shows the two parties tied on 28 per cent support among unionised workers, and Sir Keir Starmer’s party has suffered a 20 point drop in support since the election.

LupaMoonhowl · Yesterday 08:10

An acquaintance whose neighbours recently moved from London to a former mining area have involved themselves in local politics. Friend was bemused because these previously soft liberal lefty luxuryy-belief LibDem types have moved from Lib Dem to ‘leaning towards Reform’.
Acquaintance also bemused that a former Labour stronghold now has a significant Reform surge.
It’s people who’ve never encountered the ‘working class’ who don’t realise that the v traditional working class have a very strong moral fibre, pride and work ethic that the current Labour are completely out of touch with.

Disclosure Day.

And no, not the forthcoming Spielberg blockbuster.

Hopefully, something to further humiliate our hapless clown PM.

I have some stats from other European coutries, and yes certain nationalities do have far higher per capita rates when measured against an eg German baseline (and certain have lower, like Japanese nationals) - but that being said, if I had to guess, I'd say that wouldn't be the main or only reason?

That said, there's always a big spike in sexual violence in areas around the asylum hotels - central Glasgow is a current case in point.
