Help me feel better about not buying the lovely new SUV that will cost me £620 per month including finance, insurance and road tax?

My credit is poor

I currently own an 19 Nissan micra

I want so badly to drive an suv, and signed up to the contract

I know what I SHOULD do but I want this car

Where i am everyone has massive suv's and i'm just there with my dc in the micra 😞

Everyone else is clogging up the roads and polluting the environment, so you must too? Do people really think this way?

Limer · 15/05/2026 05:56

TWENTY NINE PERCENT???????

At least Dick Turpin wore a mask!

TerfOnATrain · 15/05/2026 06:01

I read this with horror. I am in absolutely no doubt as to why your credit rating is poor.

Absolute madness. Save that for a year and you’ll have a good chunk to put down in another car or use it to improve your credit rating.

How old are you?! 🤦🏼‍♀️ you sound ridiculous! If you can’t see that paying over £700 a month is a joke then there is no helping you . Good luck with your over price car 👍🏻 I wouldn’t pay half of that for a Nissan .

CuntOfTheLitter · 15/05/2026 06:22

For a start Nissans are shit. I had such a bad time with one that I literally shudder when I come across one that was also the same colour. DPF filters can be a pain. The very idea of being in hock for one makes me queasy. 600 is a fuck load of money - it’s almost a mortgage payment! You could do some serious stuff with that money.

My household income is hefty compared to most people and we’d never spend that; we buy our cars cash then keep them for 10+ years. Stuff like depreciation then doesn’t matter so much. I realise I sound like a dick saying that and I know you need the cash in the first place but seriously my own car cost me £2k it’s been great, it’s 15 years old now with 135k on the clock, still completely reliable….that’s only five months of what you’re paying with the new car….and it’s kept me moving for 180 months now… Also cheaper on running costs cos it’s not a greedy suv. I’m not saying buy a car like mine which is only beautiful in my eyes - but really OP, you’re renting a car for an extortionate amount here.

Ultimately cars are just metal tins we transport ourselves with, they’re really not as important as housing or food or pension. Don’t fall for the status thing.

NeelyOHara · 15/05/2026 06:24

Think how many taxis you can get for £700 a month!

SpringingOn · 15/05/2026 06:24

As someone upthread said, if you save the £350 per month for two years, you can buy a used car. Then you have no monthly payments except insurance.

PeachySmile2 · 15/05/2026 06:26

You can’t afford it, so don’t buy it. Your credit is bad for a reason. My monthly net is also £3k and I’d never dream of spending that much on a car.

JumpingRabbit · 15/05/2026 06:29

sadaboutcar26 · 14/05/2026 23:38

Inner london - i have no zero claims bonus

Its a 24 place qashqai if that makes a difference? I imagine not 🙈

God no, it makes it even worse, I expected it to be brand spanking shiny new for that money. Absolutely crazy!

And that fact you calculated it wrong suggests you have zero money / budget awareness. Stop spending money, build your credit score and start saving.

HeNeedsRehab · 15/05/2026 06:30

I am horrified tbh that you can’t see what a terrible idea this is but think it explains why your credit is so bad.

You insurance costs are insane too, you must’ve had a major claim!

Velvian · 15/05/2026 06:32

That is a fortune for a mediocre car. Do you own the Micra yet? How would you have to pay to own the Micra.

I would be tempted to borrow very short term to pay it off, then sell it to buy a larger, older car. My car is 11/12 years old now and still relatively new feeling and good to drive.

Iamthemoom · 15/05/2026 06:33

Buy a cheaper, second hand car, invest the difference each month. At what would be the end of the finance agreement look at your savings account balance and you’ll be glad you didn’t waste it on this car. I’ve done car finance on SUVs for about 12 years and wasted so much money. I just paid the balance to buy my last one and honestly I’ll never do car finance again! And I wasn’t paying anything like £700 a month! More like £300 but I put down a bigger deposit I guess.

Peonies12 · 15/05/2026 06:34

You don’t need a car if you live in inner London FFS. Especially not a planet and people killing car like that. Get a bike or get on the tube.

NewLeafAgain · 15/05/2026 06:36

Glad you are taking everyone's comments on board OP.
Buyong a car outright is so much cheaper and feels so much better. I'm currently driving a 15 year old car and saving for my next which will be around 4-5 years old when I buy it which is apparently optimum time for lower depreciation but still new enough.

Get yourself a written budget you can stick to and get your debt cleared, then save for a car. Depending on their age, involve the kids in the conversation too. You have a valuable lesson to teach them here.

sorrynotathome · 15/05/2026 06:37

When I read threads like these my only thought is “how does someone as daft as this get paid £3k net per month?”. Sorry, OP.

whattheysay · 15/05/2026 06:40

Lougle · 15/05/2026 03:11

So you'd paying £30,000 for a £17,000 car, which by the time it was paid off would be worth between £7,000 and £9,000, according to a quick Google.

Read that again. You'd be paying £15,000 in interest. Almost as much as the car is worth now. Then by the time you'd paid it off, it would be worth less than one third of what you'd paid.

This. You need to listen to this. It makes zero sense for you to get this car you will literally be throwing a hell of a lot of money down the drain.
Really put the effort into getting your financial position as good as possible then you will have more options.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/05/2026 06:41

My friend recently brought a 3 year old Quasqai. It looks brand new and cost much less than this!

scoobydeedoo · 15/05/2026 06:42

£620?? That's more than my mortgage payment 😶

Listen to some Dave Ramsey, he is very against car leasing/finance. Makes me feel slightly better about out 12 year old Clio that we paid for in cash while everyone is driving lovely shiny new cars we could never afford (and to be honest, a lot of the people driving them probably could never afford them either, which is why they're financing them!)

Oldgalgames · 15/05/2026 06:43

OP no one is turning heads in a Nissan, your neighbours wont think twice about your new car! I'm driving around in a 13 year old Golf and will keep it until it literally dies on me!

Changingforthisone25 · 14/05/2026 23:54

Really not a fan of these for central london too risky for pedestrians and cyclists. Unnecessary. Dont they pollute more too

I would have previously scoffed at this comment until a local child was killed by a discovery jeep while on a pedestrian crossing . The driver was.t speeding or drink driving, he just failed to stop. The judge said had it been a normal car the boy probably would have survived. As always people are extremely selfish and don't think of the impact on others. Sorry for the rant but imagine you had an accident like that.

Blundl · 15/05/2026 06:46

Is it an EV, is that why it's so expensive, We have a 21 plate X-Trail which was quite reasonable price, that's why we got it to tow the caravan. Nissan are not a luxury car, probably similar to Ford, how is it so expensive. I definitely wouldn't buy it.

Just seen it's £720, that's DEFINITELY more than my mortgage payment, that's mortgage, council tax, water and internet.

You could definitely do better things with that money OP 😊

Snorerephron · 15/05/2026 06:48

Dear god!! My income is double yours and I drive a tiny 7 year old Kia picanto

No one who lives in a city needs an SUV
They are disgusting cars on every level.
