Help me feel better about not buying the lovely new SUV that will cost me £620 per month including finance, insurance and road tax?

Nissan

My credit is poor

I currently own an 19 Nissan micra

I want so badly to drive an suv, and signed up to the contract

I know what I SHOULD do but I want this car

😭

Thats madness, and they're not even particularly nice cars.

Not like its a range rover eh

I’d never pay that for a car, complete waste of money. I’ve got an 11 year old Volvo and my husband has a 12 year old Hyundai. I’m hoping to replace mine reasonably soon but no way on earth would I pay £600 a month

Sensiblesal · 15/05/2026 00:36

You don’t need an SUV, definitely not a brand new one that is going to be 1/4 of your income. You say you have Dc’s. In terms of bills etc, can you reasonably afford this amount?

personally I wouldn’t pay that much and definitely not to keep up with the joneses. Cancel it OP and reconsider.

you won’t improve your credit rating either carrying on like this

edit. No flipping way I am paying nearly 30% interest to keep up with the jones. Give your head a wobble, its 30% interest cos your credit rating is so bad.

this is the stupidest thing you could do & the garage has seen you coming

That’s more than my mortgage

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 15/05/2026 00:38

Don’t cry. Open a new bank account and start putting money into it. Set a goal and buy a car when you reach that goal and you’ll feel so much more accomplished.

In the mean time, go find the Financielle podcast, start listening to the back catalogue, and you’ll realise how terrible an idea that car finance is to the point you’ll never even consider it in future!

LameBorzoi · 15/05/2026 00:42

Definitely don't buy it. Huge waste of money, and awful in the city.

JellyTrees · 15/05/2026 00:43

Girl, NO ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Like someone else says, it'll feel nice for a little bit then meh. Put that money in a HYSA and in 10 months having cash will feel a million times better. Drive your current car for as long as possible and save the money.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 15/05/2026 00:44

Two hundred a month on insurance?? Are you a rally driver?

LameBorzoi · 15/05/2026 00:50

sadaboutcar26 · 15/05/2026 00:31

I disagre theyre tacky, honestly, but agree that its so expensive

For a city dweller, they are super tacky and very obnoxious. Hard to park, difficult to maneouver, expensive to run, and a danger to other drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and children in particular.

Inner london - i have no zero claims bonus

Its a 24 place qashqai if that makes a difference? I imagine not 🙈

You live in inner London and you want to use over 20% your salary on a car? I earn a lot more and I don’t have a car! I use public transport and have zero debt except my mortgage.

yoshigizzit · 15/05/2026 02:28

£500 pcm for a Quashqai?! I pay less than that for my high spec brand new Audi!

MrThorpeHazell · 15/05/2026 02:35

What on Earth is nice about an SUV? Lumbering gas-guzzlers with no style or kerb appeal.

Now a sports car on the other hand ....

Mammyloveswine · 15/05/2026 02:50

My mortgage is £630 a month… 3 bed semi with en-suite and massive garden… in the north east yes but fuck paying that for a fucking car? Honest to fucking god!

Iocanepowder · 15/05/2026 03:04

Put that extra money towards future for DC! Or carpets.

£3000 a month salary sounds a lot until you say you live in London.

Also no one actually likes people who drive SUVs. Especially at school pick up. I secretly judge some of them who drive to nursery pick up in them ans struggle to park them.

Iocanepowder · 15/05/2026 03:06

Out of curiosity, what have you claimed for last year and why is your credit poor?

Lougle · 15/05/2026 03:11

sadaboutcar26 · 14/05/2026 23:43

Car costs a bit less than 17000

Interest rate of 29% plus a fixed percent amount that i'm not sure of

60 months - 500 per month hire purchase

Road tax cost is the same

Edited

So you'd paying £30,000 for a £17,000 car, which by the time it was paid off would be worth between £7,000 and £9,000, according to a quick Google.

Read that again. You'd be paying £15,000 in interest. Almost as much as the car is worth now. Then by the time you'd paid it off, it would be worth less than one third of what you'd paid.

Temporaryname158 · 15/05/2026 04:27

Do the rebel finance course that is about to start on YouTube.

i have never seen such a weak reason to spend so much money. You would be crippling yourself just because you want to copy others.

if you can afford £700 a month you could be well off if you invested it in the same way. Whatever you do dont buy the car

countrygirl99 · 15/05/2026 04:54

Cruise control in central London? 😂😂😂 You'll never get a chance to use it so a total waste of money.

The interest rate is too high.

I'm a bit confused, are you talking about two different cars - a quashqui and a massive SUV or are you describing the quashqui as a massive SUV?

A quashqui is a pretty run of the mill car, not at all massive SUV surely even in London they must be normal family cars

You absolutely shouldn't be spending that kind of money but it's hardly land rover defender territory

About to query the insurance too.

Where i am everyone has massive suv's and i'm just there with my dc in the micra 😞

Did you know that not only are massive SUV cars more dangerous to pedestrians, especially children who can less easily be seen by the driver, that in an accident you're more likely to be hurt inside an SUV than a standard car?

Why are you so desperate to keep up with the Jones???

I drive an old Ford Fiesta, nothing much to look at but I paid it off and own it outright. I could get some flashy new car on finance but why would I want to???

JustMyView13 · 15/05/2026 05:34

This is an awful deal. You can pick up a brand new one of these on a lease arrangement for about £350pcm used cars on finance are a terrible idea. You’d be better off with a bank loan (but I appreciate with your credit rating maybe not an option). Have you factored in gap insurance because one unlucky accident and you’ll have no car, but you’ll still owe the debt for it.

You’ll be paying £30k for a £17k car, based on your numbers.
