Would you take DP or expect DP to take you for a tooth extraction?

Pinribbons · 14/05/2026 14:16

I've never had it done, so don't know what's involved.

DP obviously isn't looking forward to it, but doesn't seem overly nervous.

I'm working, but could organise my day to take him. Would you if you could or is it perfectly normal to go alone? He's assuming he'll go alone.

I'm a chicken so yes 🤣
He had no choice to come with the one I've had done as I was sedated. But I'd get him to come with me anyway

Avoidtheloo · 14/05/2026 14:19

Absolutely go alone.

Peakypolly · 14/05/2026 14:20

My DH drove me home after my wisdom tooth removal because so many people warned me I'd feel dreadful. In fact I would have been fine to drive, so unless he has been warned it will be a particularly tricky extraction I don't think you need to take time off work.

Seawolves · 14/05/2026 14:20

No, I wouldn't expect anyone to accompany me for an extraction.

charlieandjenna · 14/05/2026 14:21

I’ve had a couple of extractions and a root canal so voice of experience. It might be better if you can go. Went on my own for the last one. It’s not the end of the world but it does help if you can relax and let someone else drive you home afterwards. Also make sure you have paracetamol and some soft food at home

cvgji · 14/05/2026 14:21

I felt like shit after mine and was driving with a mouth full of blood on the point of tears, so yes, I wish I’d had a lift back

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 14/05/2026 14:23

No based on my experience - I have a small mouth so had all 4 wisdom teeth removed on advice plus recently had root canal (thanks 3 babies).

All 100% fine.

But I do know someone who felt poorly after a RC so depends if he has previously felt bad after dental work I guess.

Megifer · 14/05/2026 14:27

Well I jabbed myself right in the eyeball - nail actually squished right into my literal jelly eye ball - driving back from mine as the anesthetic numbed my eye area so I didnt close my eye when I went to itch it 😩 luckily it was on a quiet road so I could pull over straight away and wait for my sight to return.

So as long as he doesnt do that id say he should be fine on his own

Lurkingandlearning · 14/05/2026 14:27

If they would like me to and I could then I would for all the reasons PPs have given.

tarheelbaby · 14/05/2026 14:29

Definitely go together b/c you don't know how you'll feel. It could be easy; it could be horrible. This is one of the great things about having a DP - someone to help you when times are tough.

re: tooth extraction
My DDs have both had baby teeth removed and they were in no fit state afterwards. Since they were school aged, they wouldn't have been driving but they were not well enough to take themselves home.
DD1 collapsed in the corridor just outside the treatment room and with DD2, we had to stop several times on the short drive home b/c she was feeling so unwell.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 14/05/2026 14:30

No.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 14/05/2026 14:31

DH can’t drive due to a disability so it wasn’t an option, but when I had my impacted wisdom tooth out I was totally fine to drive afterwards. Not an issue at all.

Jibaka · 14/05/2026 14:33

Depends. A straightforward pull out of a tooth, I’d drive myself. A bigger operation, then I would think more carefully and take the advice of the dentist.

MiaKulper · 14/05/2026 14:34

No.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/05/2026 14:35

No, but then I prefer to do anything medical/dentistry alone. Experience tells me to ask for assistance from anyone means my careful plan and more importantly my needs are railroaded into being second to what someone else wants.

TappyGilmore · 14/05/2026 14:40

I had a wisdom tooth out and then a molar out. Drove myself both times. In fact with the molar I just went right back to work afterwards. My dentist appointment was at 2.00pm and I was back at my desk at 3.00pm.

Candlesniffin · 14/05/2026 14:41

Would totally go alone, and have, twice. It's quick and not really a big deal.

needapokerface · 14/05/2026 14:44

I had 13 out on top and 3 out on the bottom and then had dentures put in at the same appointment, as my husband works away from home I had no-one to take me and bring me home. I was fine driving, but a bit sore when all the injections wore off. I probably would have appreciated him being there but it wasn't possible.

In hindsight I should have asked him to take the day off, just for support

AprilMizzel · 14/05/2026 14:46

No - DH been find with wisdom tooth done at dentist. Mum had few out and been fine to drive afterwards.

Would be different if at hopsital and general anesthetic is needed - which apparently will be the case when mine finally needs doing due to it's location and way it's coem trhough and was the case for FIL after an infection in one wisdom tooth which locked his jaw.

purplecorkheart · 14/05/2026 14:47

I went alone for mine. I did walk there and back and was fine. I actually decided to do a bit of shopping in the shop across the way afterwards and did not need painkillers.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 14/05/2026 14:48

I mean it’s nice if someone wants to go with you but not necessary. I’ve driven myself to and from complex wisdom tooth extractions at the hospital under local anaesthetic and I’ve got multiple complex disabilities etc. Dh has had a lot of time off work already due to my health issues and our disabled child so needs must!

My OH also had to be sedated and he was like a drunken idiot when I took him home 😂

Barrenfieldoffucks · 14/05/2026 14:57

I went on my own, was fine. As did DH when he had one.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/05/2026 14:59

I was required to have a friend with me for mine because it was with GA. I was not even allowed to have someone just come to accompany me in a taxi home - he had to be on site the whole time, which I found total overkill.

With local anaesthetic, I was alone, but I was single. If I had a partner I'd probably like him to come if possible.

JayJayj · 14/05/2026 15:00

My mum used to come with me. It stopped during Covid (I was 34/35). I have high anxiety with dentists (due to bad experiences as a teenager). Mine now is a lovely man. He even said if I needed to bring he would be fine with it. But I used the situation to try and get over it.

Even though the anxiety is still, it isn’t as bad.

He is really sweet and kind of talks to me like child, in an endearing way not patronising. He has said how proud he is at how much I’ve improved 🙈😂.

So if he feels like he needs you I wouldn’t feel embarrassed about it.
