Would you take DP or expect DP to take you for a tooth extraction?

Pinribbons · 14/05/2026 14:16

I've never had it done, so don't know what's involved.

DP obviously isn't looking forward to it, but doesn't seem overly nervous.

I'm working, but could organise my day to take him. Would you if you could or is it perfectly normal to go alone? He's assuming he'll go alone.

I’ve had a couple of extractions and if you’d asked me after the first, I’d have happily said sure you’re fine to go on your own, I was longer in the waiting room than in the chair and was absolutely fine, but the second one was fucking awful. The tooth broke up and the root got left and it was just… awful. Went on and on and was the most pain I’ve ever been in (saying something!), I think I went into some sort of shock afterwards, all shaky and dizzy and tearful, and I’m normally very stoic. Certainly couldn’t have driven myself home anyway. I was very glad my husband was with me.
Ultimately I’m saying if I could, I would!

ParadiseIsNoBunker · 14/05/2026 15:34

No. I jumped on the bus after wisdom tooth removal.

FunMustard · 14/05/2026 15:36

No I wouldn't expect either, but I would take him if he wanted me to.

He has had a tooth out without my support though; it was fine.

And I don't think the anaesthetic makes you feel weird? It's just a local.

I am, however, accompanying my son next week when he has teeth out in preparation for braces, but he's only 14.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 14/05/2026 15:36

Yes to both

Daffodilsinthespring · 14/05/2026 15:37

Yes of course I’d go.

TheChiffchaff · 14/05/2026 15:38

I absolutely would. I'd want someone to drive me home even if I wasn't sedated. My last extraction was traumatic and I couldn't have driven home in the state I was in. I am not a wuss, I've had lots of medical procedures and would rather give birth again than have an extraction.
DH once went on his own for an extraction and wished he hadn't as he was bleeding all over on the drive home.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/05/2026 15:38

No I haven’t needed anyone to come with me since I became an adult

Arcticsway · 14/05/2026 15:38

When I've had extractions I've gone on my own. I had my wisdom teeth out (on four separate occasions) and did not have sedation. I would have been fine to drive, but my dentist was in central London so driving wasn't an option and I took the tube.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/05/2026 15:41

I don’t drive but have just got a cab/uber back.

Would you expect to be in the room with him or just there to drive him back?

rwalker · 14/05/2026 15:43

I wouldn’t expect or even want anyone to go with me

whyohwhyisitalwayswet · 14/05/2026 15:43

I would want company and offer company and sympathy to my DP!

Are you both nervous of dentists? That must be tough.

Just for the heavy duty stuff - like extractions! Childhood trauma. He isn't nervous at all, to be fair. But, I'd project and want to be there 😂

CoCoJones26 · 14/05/2026 15:58

No! Its not that big a deal. I've had a couple done, as has DP, both drove ourselves to and from dentist. Different if it involves a hospital stay tho.

Love4both · 14/05/2026 16:02

My dh went alone for an extraction but not long after his appointment time the dental practice phoned me to collect him as he was unwell.

Ophy83 · 14/05/2026 16:04

I took DH as he has a phobia of dentists at the best of times so I didn't want him driving

Really? I had an extraction a week ago and wouldn’t have considered it heavy duty. I didn’t even realise she had finished. Childhood trauma I get.

But then I took one of my own teeth out during my lunch hour once 😬

I think, for me, having someone there who was nervous would not helpful 🤣

NoYouCantComeToTheWedding · 14/05/2026 16:07

I'm single so maybe I am just used to being independent but I have had two extractions, including a complicated wisdom tooth extraction at the dental hospital, and it would never have occurred to me to ask anyone to come with me.

Level75 · 14/05/2026 16:09

I had 2 teeth out at once and it didn't even cross my mind to get my partner to come!

But... on leaving the dentist I felt dreadful - really dizzy and cold and wobbly. I got home OK and spent 2 hours all shaky in front of the fire. I think I was in shock. With the benefit of hindsight it would have been good for my partner to have driven me home.

You are my hero! 😮

My DP just laughs are my nervousness, and has excellent teeth and dental genetics and hygiene so hardly ever goes to the dentist.

Same here. Dh is nervous of dentists and I’m positively phobic. I’m due an extraction soon and debating between general anaesthetic or sedation. Dh will need to come.

C8H10N4O2 · 14/05/2026 16:11

I’ve taken myself but as pp say - it depends on the type of anaesthesia as much as anything.

Modern dental anaesthesia is so much better than what I remember from childhood that I’ve rarely had problems, even with extraction and implants.

For anything requiring sedation/GA then its different and you may have to take someone.

mindutopia · 14/05/2026 16:12

No. I’m not his mummy. Only time we would need to drive each other anywhere is if we couldn’t drive after (due to anaesthetic). So he’s taken me to hospital for surgery, but definitely not for the dentist, unless it was wisdom teeth and I was being put under.

cramptramp · 14/05/2026 16:17

No. I’d go alone and would expect him to go alone.

Coconutter24 · 14/05/2026 16:20

I would take my child for a tooth extraction, I would not take my husband. If he’s assuming he’ll go alone does that mean he’s ok with the idea to go alone?
