Would you take DP or expect DP to take you for a tooth extraction?

Pinribbons · 14/05/2026 14:16

I've never had it done, so don't know what's involved.

DP obviously isn't looking forward to it, but doesn't seem overly nervous.

I'm working, but could organise my day to take him. Would you if you could or is it perfectly normal to go alone? He's assuming he'll go alone.

Wisdom teeth they dose you up a bit so I would definitely - and did with my children.

An ordinary extraction no I wouldn't unless he asked me to or he was getting extra sedation for some reason. We've driven ourselves home after root canals, implants, etc.

AndrewPreview · 14/05/2026 15:05

I did for my wisdom tooth extractions so DH could drive me home (one was an NHS referral an hour away from home), but for my molar I went alone.

The molar ended up being by far the worst one but I was still fine driving (as I was still numbed up).

It's up to him, if he's not fussed then let him go on his own.

seanconneryseyebrow · 14/05/2026 15:06

I just had an extraction and it was super grim. They expected 10 mins and it ended up taking 1.5 hours. There is no way I could have driven myself. I actually didn't want my partner to stay, as it stresses me out worrying about the person waiting, but he insisted and drove me back. Id rather just get ubers tbh. No way id drive home though - but Im a nervous driver as it is.

OhBettyCalmDown · 14/05/2026 15:07

For an extraction at the dentist no. An extraction at hospital yes, as your usually not allowed to drive etc afterwards. Ultimately though I’d expect any adult that wanted accompanying to just say so and I’d happily do it.

blankcanvas3 · 14/05/2026 15:09

Yes but only because I’m scared of the dentist and don’t like injections. If i wasn’t I wouldn’t be bothered. If DH can’t come my DF does

WildCountry · 14/05/2026 15:10

I had a wisdom tooth out at the hospital and then drove to pick up my kids from school! Was offered sedation but wouldn’t have been allowed to drive straight afterwards so had to decline.

SurleyTurnip · 14/05/2026 15:11

Yes, I would definitely go with DH if he was having a tooth out and I presume he would go with me.

Fibrous · 14/05/2026 15:11

My wisdom tooth came out in seconds. Apart from the litres (it felt) of blood going everywhere, it wasn't a big deal at all. I drove myself there and back. I've had worse fillings!

Miranda65 · 14/05/2026 15:13

No. Either one of us is perfectly capable of using a taxi, if anaesthetic means driving not allowed.

Pearl69 · 14/05/2026 15:14

My DH took me - wisdom tooth extraction in your 50s is no joke (size of it!). So I was in no fit state to drive home. I’d do the same if it was him.

Peridot1 · 14/05/2026 15:14

I have had a couple of extractions and DH dropped me and collected me for the first one which was just as well as it took way longer and was way more complicated than first thought. I was a bit shaky afterwards.

Second one I was going to have done under sedation and he would have had to take me and drive me home. But trying to coordinate him (and ignore his slight moaning) and the two dentists was becoming a bit complicated so I did it without sedation and went on my own.

Guess what I’m doing tomorrow? On my birthday? Taking DH to have an extraction under sedation! I had to take him for his initial appointment too as he is utterly terrified of dentists and hadn’t been for over 25 years. Only went this time as a tooth broke.

No based on my experience - I have a small mouth so had all 4 wisdom teeth removed on advice plus recently had root canal (thanks 3 babies).

All 100% fine.

But I do know someone who felt poorly after a RC so depends if he has previously felt bad after dental work I guess.

how does 3 babies link to root canal? Sorry, genuine question @JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff

Givemeausernamepls · 14/05/2026 15:17

I had wisdom tooth out at 21 at the dentists and then at 42 i had impacted wisdom tooth and one next to it out at hospital last year. I went alone to both and was fine.

CombatBarbie · 14/05/2026 15:18

If they are anticipating only using LA then absolutely not, it wouldnt even occur to me to take someone tbh. They can usually tell if it will require sedation on xrays in which case, yes but its rare these days.

I do remember one extraction with one of my kids though (to get braces), dentist was literally on top of her trying to get it out but she didnt feel pain, just the tugging. Completely fine afterwards and insisted we went to primark for her efforts 🤣

Waitingfordoggo · 14/05/2026 15:19

I’ve had three extractions and two root canals and I didn’t need chaperoning. But I wasn’t sedated and I’m not dentist phobic. I fell asleep during the root canals which is apparently quite common (it’s very boring and takes ages). I wasn’t allowed to stay asleep though cause it made me relax my jaw so the dentist couldn’t access the tooth 😂

Isthismykarma · 14/05/2026 15:23

When I had my lower wisdom teeth out under LA, the dentist said afterwards it was the worst one he’d done in his 18 years. I bled all over, screamed the place down and could barely stand after.
DP took me home and then A&E the following day where I was admitted for a few nights and put on an IV and emergency surgery.
So glad I had him!

youalright · 14/05/2026 15:26

No i can't remember it being a big deal I've had all my wisdom teeth out.

BillieWiper · 14/05/2026 15:26

No but I did go in with my mum getting an extraction at the NHS hospital. It was pretty chaotic and gorey! And took about 15 minutes of pulling and cutting.

But my own extraction was fine and took about 10 seconds!

It really depends on the tooth but having someone with you wouldn't really make it any better I don't think?

Remindmeofthebabee · 14/05/2026 15:26

I went with my husband for his and i’m glad I did as he was dribbling blood all over himself and that wouldn’t have been a fun drive for him. He didn’t ask, I offered.

I would hope (but not ask) that he’d arrange his day to drive me there and back if I needed an extraction too.

Oldraver · 14/05/2026 15:28

Well yes he did as he was around anyway, but I'd also go on my own. He will come next time as I will be sedated

cinnamonmilkandhoney · 14/05/2026 15:29

They don’t dose you up any differently for wisdom teeth unless sedation is needed, it’s exactly the same as a normal extraction. I’ve had two recently taken out and drove myself there and back

toastofthetown · 14/05/2026 15:30

I drove DH home from his wisdom tooth removal and even though he wasn’t sedated he still looked sick and shakey, which surprised me because we both thought he’d be fine and I mostly volunteered because it was an excuse to work from a coffee shop I like for while. I got a lift home from mine too, but I had a GA so wasn’t allowed to drive

Villanousvillans · 14/05/2026 15:32

The last tooth I had out was a tricky sod. DH took me and waited. I’m so glad he did because I was shaking afterwards.

Tryagain26 · 14/05/2026 15:32

Is it only one tooth? I went by myself. I think I had it done in lunch break. It wasn't a big deal because the tooth had already died and it was a local anaesthetic.
It's different if he is having a general anaesthetic or his wisdom teeth taken out though.

GuelderRoses · 14/05/2026 15:33

If it would involve driving yourself there and back, it would be better to have someone take you instead. The extraction and the anaesthetic can make you feel rather odd for some time afterwards.
